Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Don't worry, everyone will support England against Argentina!
I don't know anyone who hates the English, football or not. Just a bit of banter from my Irish friends (who live in the UK), but no hate.

Football wise, I don't think England is THAT hated, but it's true that they're not massively popular, compared to other national squads.
It might come from the fact that English football is very localised, most English players play in Premier League, whereas Belgian, French, German, Norwegian etc players move around and acquire a following in each city / club they work for. But I also know a lot of non-Brits who follow Premier League religiously.

I'm French and recently, we had a lot of riots following Paris winning the Champion's League. From France, people were looking up to Arsenal fans, how peaceful and joyful the parade was.
England has a way to do football that is quite unique and remarkable, and I truly believe that the rest of the world appreciate that.

If anything, I think English football is a bit intimidating for non-Brits.

I think this is a great post. Very considered and relevantly informed.

Insert any other ethnicity instead of English and you would be on racism charges.

Well I don’t like the Russians. When do you think
I can expect my “racism charges”?

Spain and Portugal receded to the regular country status and aren’t gallivanting around the world lecturing everyone about democracy and human rights and how to run their countries for the last 70 years.
Britain along with US has oversized meddling role in much more recent times.
Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria
Britain is directly responsible for Iranian issues, in Palestine and India/Pakistan Etc etc

Yes. Obviously not all, but there is a tendency to take over a place with loud and not very self-aware behaviour.

I've also realised Anglo-Saxons generally tend to talk very loudly - especially after a few drinks, but not always. I include Americans and Australians in that observation...

Lmfao - Eastern Europeans are the loudest.

Scottish people were disproportionately represented in Empire activities. Dont tell me you didnt know that?

Are they? In fairness I've not spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe.

In Western Europe, I tend to notice British voices crowing above the din a lot. Ditto American.

Exactly the pp sounds like they’ve engaged with those posts in SM and been fed more.

Mine is England celebration, Jude Bellingham congrats and some on the Haaland friendship.

Mine was that until this morning, I saw a lot of comments about England being cheats and such, people saying we don’t deserve it and that people will root for anyone but us. I have no idea why it suddenly changed.

Persephonia1966 · 12/07/2026 14:10

Also, the current England squad in particular are largely unproblematic (obviously they could all secret be evil behind the scenes). On the surface they are positive, largely play fairly, friends off pitch with players from other countries, multiracial (I hate to make race an issue but it matters here) and quite a good symbol of (I cringe writing this) positive masculinity. And while there are, unfortunately racist twats among England supporters, the vast majority of fans are behind Bellingham etc and we aren't seeing the same scenes we saw.from Argentinian fans or Paraguayan politicians

All of which makes them particularly hateful to a certain type of American (not all Americans by any means). Because they show a positive snapshot of the "modern England" they like to decry. We are supposed to be degraded and fallen due to the white race being swamped by inferior immigrants and not having guns. Not have English footballers saving the day with amazing goals and having positive funny friendships off pitch with vikings. This definitely is NOT all Americans or everyone on Reddit especially. But I think it's part of the tide of negativity being pushed about England/Britain by the far right.

That's probably linguistic as much as anything.

Having recently been in a very multi-national place on holiday, I can assure you we are no louder than anyone else.

I lived in Spain for some time. I was extremely shocked by the open and casual racism there.

Italians and French probably score higher on the vocal decibel front, I suppose.

The Welsh, Scottish or Northern Ireland nations have never really come into it, as only English in the group. Brit Bashing is just catchier. We see ourselves as fair game, really.

Edited

But it's not catchier to the other three nations because people generally love us and you using "Brit Bashing" groups us in with you lot. Just say "English" bashing.

You are basically eroding the fact we exist! It is ENGLISH bashing. Own it.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

This
Dh is Spanish and I am English
I rather Spain win than England for a number of reasons

thestudio · 12/07/2026 14:12
  1. Most people think Great Britain/United Kingdom is a politer way of saying 'England' without hurting the feelings of the Scots or Welsh ;-)
  2. As others have pointed out, the legacy of our rapacious colonialism (as against the Spanish, for eg) is still very much alive with continuing consequences for the colonised nations and their diaspora. In Ireland, many would say it's ongoing.
  3. The legendary thuggery of English fans seems to many to be rooted in the same worldview as our colonialism - here we come, the invaders, and fuck you all. So it all seems like a continuum.
  4. Because English is the global lingua franca, many are under the very mistaken impression that the UK generally is a powerful successful nation and they prefer the underdog.

Evaka · 12/07/2026 14:13

How do you think colonisation was 100s of years ago?!

India/Pakistan, Ireland, Caribbean, Sub Saharan African countries, ongoing meddling in the Middle East? All 20th century wrongs.

Do you understand that colonisation fucking trashed those nations' economies, ability to develop governance mechanisms that worked for them?

I'm irish living in London and wish england well in the World Cup but wilful ignorance of the past is one of the reasons English people are often badly thought of.

Differentforgirls · 12/07/2026 13:33

Can you not see that this post could make people from Scotland dislike you?

The OP asks why people dislike the English and tbh, a lot of the responses from English people on this thread perfectly demonstrate why.

There is not one thread on here from a Scottish, Irish or Welsh person asking why we're "hated".

Because we're not.

There are many started by English people asking that question.

And it's always answered in the replies. By a minority of English people.

Most English people are just like the people in the other three parts of the UK.

But the minority are loud and let them down.

But those events happened,
Why am I not allowed to stick up for my country, when the Scots are being so anti English?
Watch Wimbledon and please point out the hooligans.
Because I know a few there, who were also at the football. They will be gorgeously dressed, good looking and very well groomed.

Which two weeks?

It was called factory fortnight, northern towns had it too eg. In Yorkshire and Lancashire.
The factories shut down for 2 weeks.
Can't remember the actual weeks now.

No way do the French. Have you ever dined in an expensive French restaurant? It's like a church, then in comes Eleanor booming: "JOOOOOOOOhNNNNYY!!!! It's so LOOOOOOVELY to see you!! LOOOOONG time no see! SUUUUUUCH a long time!!" (I am drawing on a specific incident here.) And we do tend to get rowdier on holiday.

The French are quite low decibel.

Ireland is doing really well for itself buoyed by its single purpose as a european tax haven, and the only reason it does so is because you speak English.
You're welcome!

Mine was that until this morning, I saw a lot of comments about England being cheats and such, people saying we don’t deserve it and that people will root for anyone but us. I have no idea why it suddenly changed.

Some of it is Americans in particular getting into football for the first time (which is nice for them) and getting very enthusiastically invested in wanting particular teams to win, and also wanting "narrative consistency". So Norway were very popular because of their "row" thing and because Haaland is popular and hilarious. So they got very into the idea of Norway making it to the final and sad when they didn't. Ironically, Norwegian football fans who were probably much more invested in Norway winning are more graceful losers. Likewise Americans got really into the idea of being Scotland fans because they were fun in Boston, so are trying to buy into the ABE ethos without realising it's often slightly tongue on cheek and overstated.

It's just naturally enthusiastic people getting into a thing for the first time. They'll move on pretty quickly.

Differentforgirls · 12/07/2026 14:16

lovecotswoldsliving · 12/07/2026 13:25

To be fair Scottish men are 10 times worse.
My husband worked abroad and always dreaded it when Scottish men came out on rotation. He was always having to do damage limitation for their behaviour. More often than not they couldn’t fly as they got drunk at the airport. When they were onshore they got completely drunk at night.
On one occasion one of them peed all over the furniture in the shared house and was fired the next day. Another was fired for groping a Virgin air steward. Another had to be put in the boot of a car and whisked out of the country for inappropriate behaviour. It was always a relief when the teams were from anywhere else in the world.

Why do you hate Scottish people so much?

Goditsmemargaret · 12/07/2026 14:17

DeftGoldHedgehog · 12/07/2026 13:52

Me neither!

The Italia 90 doco is worth a watch on Sky. While I was gutted we lost to (W.) Germany at the time of course it was actually lovely for them to win the cup at the time of reunification and so on.

And remember then WW2 was far more in living memory. One of the players said it was the first time people had felt good about flying the flag and singing the national anthem.

The Yugoslavia team bits are insightful and moving.

Edited

This was utterly amazing and about so much more than football.
