Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Reading these posts and comparing with people’s actual enjoyment of getting through to the semis doesn’t match.

It’s just happiness here, with people going off in posts

The question at the end of my post.

Oh i see. About Bradford?

well no, if you move to a country to live in you absolutely should learn the language. What was your point in asking that?

and yes when you travel to a different country you must learn their culture, say hi, please and thank you at the very least in their native language, and perhaps try some of their food. Otherwise why go there?

as for the american asking for fries, i dont know why it was denied. There are rude people everywhere.

asking for bacon then proceeding to teach them how to cook it without being grateful wasnt polite at all and, for me, i find that it is a widespread attitute of english people travelling abroad. “I travel but i want my food and exactly how it is cooked at home”.

I always thought it was Scottish too actually. Probably because we invented so many other things.

Why did you think that?

You know that a lot of these "gammony, uneducated, frothing at the mouth, chip-eating, pissed up twats" on cheap holidays could be from Germany, Holland, France and pretty much every other European country? This underclass is not exclusive to the UK.

I would suggest paying a bit more money and avoiding all inclusive resorts. Or better still, stop being so fucking snobby.

Snobby? No, it's an inconvenient truth. Not exclusive but they are often banging on about England, wearing football shirts and being pissed up twats.
Obviously other countries have them too, but we hear more about the England scuzzas.

I’m English, I support England but…. there is a certain arrogance about English football and a sense of entitlement. We often think we are far better than we actually are, last nights game being a good example and how luck and Bellingham are the only reasons we’re through really. But the way the fans get on it’s like we’re better than everyone else and the trophy should be ours.

I mean we hate the French for similar reasons so… assuming they’re in the final and we’re not it’ll be anyone but France. Though to be fair they are incredibly good but also arrogant!

I agree with what you say about the English entitlement. I’d love it if they won, but in no way do I expect them to. I think Argentina will take England apart on Wednesday.

It’s the same as on MN where America is always talked badly about. Which I find odd because the US is huge with lots of different people but we are always bashed as if we are all alike. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Let's say your current President hasn't helped things. Trump is to the US what Putin is to the Russian.

The irony is that a lot of English people have irish heriage
Half my family including my Dad are irish
So if we are all ignorant ill informed cunts i wonder where we get it from🤔

MrsPapillon · 12/07/2026 13:32

@Goditsmemargaret To put it bluntly, you are largely arrogant ill-informed cunts. Whinging that everyone doesn't hate Germany FFS - Germany is fucking ashamed of the holocaust. They have earned the respect and admiration of the world.

So ashamed that the far-right came 2nd in their last elections. 1 in 5 Germans aren’t that ashamed.

FastFood · 12/07/2026 13:32

Don't worry, everyone will support England against Argentina!
I don't know anyone who hates the English, football or not. Just a bit of banter from my Irish friends (who live in the UK), but no hate.

Football wise, I don't think England is THAT hated, but it's true that they're not massively popular, compared to other national squads.
It might come from the fact that English football is very localised, most English players play in Premier League, whereas Belgian, French, German, Norwegian etc players move around and acquire a following in each city / club they work for. But I also know a lot of non-Brits who follow Premier League religiously.

I'm French and recently, we had a lot of riots following Paris winning the Champion's League. From France, people were looking up to Arsenal fans, how peaceful and joyful the parade was.
England has a way to do football that is quite unique and remarkable, and I truly believe that the rest of the world appreciate that.

If anything, I think English football is a bit intimidating for non-Brits.

Differentforgirls · 12/07/2026 13:33

lovecotswoldsliving · 12/07/2026 12:41

Your ignorance Bubbles is shocking. But widespread in your country.
Probably why so many successful Scottish people move South.
Crikey even Sturgeon has decided it’s better down here. That says it all really.
I once went on a cheap holiday and there were crowds of men from Shots, wearing kilts and pushing trolleys of alcohol around. Their language and behaviour upset the locals. So using your theory, this must be widespread behaviour of Scottish people abroad????

Can you not see that this post could make people from Scotland dislike you?

The OP asks why people dislike the English and tbh, a lot of the responses from English people on this thread perfectly demonstrate why.

There is not one thread on here from a Scottish, Irish or Welsh person asking why we're "hated".

Because we're not.

There are many started by English people asking that question.

And it's always answered in the replies. By a minority of English people.

Most English people are just like the people in the other three parts of the UK.

But the minority are loud and let them down.

lovecotswoldsliving · 12/07/2026 13:33

Gardenandseawitch · 12/07/2026 13:18

I think it probably has to do with:

  • How some English people behave when on holiday abroad. The drunken, loud and arrogant type might be a minority but unfortunately they do give England a bad name
  • Brexit: another example of a misplaced sense of superiority combined with pure stupidity...
  • The history: the Empire and so on
  • Our shitty right wing media. People are appalled by what is written in the Daily Mail for example
  • The Farage-loving type that looks down on anything foreign, which is hardly going to make them popular with foreigners
  • A tendency to be reserved which can come across as coldness.

The Irish and the Scots are definitely seen as friendlier people.

Ultimately though it is just sport and an amount of rivalry is always going to be expected.

What about the French burning their city after their Champions league win?
Does that make all French arrogant hooligans, willing to put lives at risk?

You hear what you want to hear. Like I said, its not a behaviour exclusive to England. I hate seeing similar Dutch twats, they are unbearable.

I'm Irish and I'm up for England, but kind of clandestinely. I wouldn't be cheering for them in a pub, like, but I'm happy they're through. This may be a poor reflection on me 😁.
Harry Kane is a lovely chap.

The lovely Harry Kane who is applauding his equally lovely golfing pal Donald Trump?!

Maybe they boast about it in front of you as you insist on calling a game that invented, 'soccer'.

English football hooliganism was a boomer issue, hasn't happened in a generation.

Plenty of European clubs still have a violent racist thug element. And some nations have actually elected far right politicians (regularly) and have far more political division than the UK no matter what Russia, Tommy Twelve names and Farage would like to see. When we went to Croatia it was wonderful but there was also far right football ultras graffiti and let's not forget the relatively recent civil war and massacres.

Just the fact England has several black players is enough to set some racist twats off. They get racial abuse when playing in some parts of Europe.

Let's not pretend England is a racist thug haven while everyone else in Europe skips along holding hands and talking of philosophy while drinking fine wines.

Goldenbear · 12/07/2026 13:35

localnotail · 12/07/2026 13:27

It depend what resort/ hotel you are visiting. Some have, for example, predominantly Dutch people being twats. Some have mostly German. Another issue is that in the UK more working class people can afford to go abroad than in some other European countries.

I'm not trying to defend English twats but saying they are the worst is a bit rich.

It's always the English in Spain that people base their inaccurate global view of the English on.

Cetim · 12/07/2026 13:35

Erm. It could be empire but I doubt it. The Brits have a reputation (accurate or not) for being arrogant and for hating anyone who is not British/English.

ThunderThunderThunderThunderCats · 12/07/2026 13:36

@Goditsmemargaret a lot of those ill informed arrogant cunt are from Irish descent, myself included. Funny that.

I think the English are also seen as snobs, and Brexit didn't help in that regard!

I'm not so sure about "snobs" being the right word.

Maybe try a "k" at the front. Germans steal beach loungers but Brits get pretty drunk and rowdy, and not everyone sees that as endearing.

ETA, we ski a lot and tend to avoid resorts with lots of British skiers, as they do bring a different vibe to the place.

I absolutely agree with you. I was taken to see a London team with my brothers by my Dad as a child in the 80s and 90s. I literally saw this unfold and was scared to go along even to the family stands.

Tajfel's social identity theory ie in group/out group.

The main problem with humans is that most of them are stupid and don't have any insight into their psychological processes. Which is a slightly ironic sentence but hey ho!

I'm in misanthrope mode today.

ChilliBrandy · 12/07/2026 13:40

I'm from Germany and I've never met a German person who hates England. They are always positive about England in my experience.

SnapAndFartAllDayLong · 12/07/2026 13:40

I don't understand why some people are tarring the English as all drunks etc. When every country has horrible, aggressive drunk people

I've just come back from Turkey and we watched most games and there was no horrible encounters and everyone was very respectful to each other

We had germans, Russians, Norwegians etc all sat in one bar enjoying the games in a respectful manner which was lovely to witness

Infact, the only time I felt uneasy was with a very drunk Russian at the beach who kicked off at his Mrs and was being a dick throughout the boules beach match!

Have you been to Swiss ski resorts, they are very inclusive, they love a diverse demographic!
