Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

But you were very much promoting the idea of the Irish viewpoint of the English being universal. It absolutely isn't. Are you thinking of Mediterranean European countries?

i dont think i was but forgive me if that came across like that.

i live in ireland and this part of their history is still very much present not in their everyday life but perhaps why they dont support england in sporting events. The only i have seen irish rugby fans at the last 6 nations was because an english win would have meant that ireland would be winning the championship.

Obviously she didn’t see the mayhem and celebrations of Norway and Mexico before their matches. Norway were out on the streets celebrating, Mexico was at a standstill.
But dare the English want to celebrate.
She sounds like the Office Fun Sponge, sucking the life out of every bit of joy.

You know all of those gammony, uneducated, frothing at the mouth, chip-eating, pissed up twats who love to get punchy after a few too many pints?

They go on holidays.

You know that a lot of these "gammony, uneducated, frothing at the mouth, chip-eating, pissed up twats" on cheap holidays could be from Germany, Holland, France and pretty much every other European country? This underclass is not exclusive to the UK.

I would suggest paying a bit more money and avoiding all inclusive resorts. Or better still, stop being so fucking snobby.

unbuttonedowl · 12/07/2026 13:15

For me it's the arrogance of the British Empire that seems to come out in the British fans - I find the 'it's coming home' so off-putting given just how much the British Empire took from other countries (and have never really been held accountable.) I also find the sentimentality over the top - Hey Jude, Sweet Caroline etc. I am 100% gunning for France. I think for a lot of people from countries that were colonised by the British it's a natural instinct to say ABE.

Why?

Because the hypocrisy is astounding. This is the overwhelmingly white country that gave us antimigrant riots, antisemitic attacks, the Magdalene Laundries, didnt decriminalise homosexuality until the 90s, didnt decriminalise abortion until 2018 (just let that sink in) but would have us believe its just a nation of happy go lucky heart of gold goodtimers. Please.

Executrixnotextraordinaire · 12/07/2026 12:16

The modern game played at the moment is widely recognised as having come from Scotland, the English FA coopted much of the rugby style and tactics into what is known as football but that is very much not what is played nowadays.

sadly this tournament is doing its best to disrupt play.

I always thought it was Scottish too actually. Probably because we invented so many other things.

GoldInYourSmile · 12/07/2026 13:17

Differentforgirls · 12/07/2026 12:34

So do they bash all four nations?

The Welsh, Scottish or Northern Ireland nations have never really come into it, as only English in the group. Brit Bashing is just catchier. We see ourselves as fair game, really.

Gardenandseawitch · 12/07/2026 13:18

I think it probably has to do with:

  • How some English people behave when on holiday abroad. The drunken, loud and arrogant type might be a minority but unfortunately they do give England a bad name
  • Brexit: another example of a misplaced sense of superiority combined with pure stupidity...
  • The history: the Empire and so on
  • Our shitty right wing media. People are appalled by what is written in the Daily Mail for example
  • The Farage-loving type that looks down on anything foreign, which is hardly going to make them popular with foreigners
  • A tendency to be reserved which can come across as coldness.

The Irish and the Scots are definitely seen as friendlier people.

Ultimately though it is just sport and an amount of rivalry is always going to be expected.

Jafferz · 12/07/2026 13:18

Edited to add link

I'm Irish living in England and am happy to support England and I think the players are great. I have no time for any anti- English sentiment just for the sake of it - it's pathetic.

That said, the English fans have a reputation that is hard to shake, even if it's not 100% fair. There is definitely an element that does England a huge disservice. And events like the Landsdown Road riot live long in peoples memories. I still remember watching the horror of it unfold as a child.

To be fair though, more often it is the English men causing trouble. They don't seem to know how to behave in public and can't handle their drink.

Hiyaeveryone · 12/07/2026 13:19

Most people don't actually hate us - at least not individually but football is tribal, very tribal and that permeates the game and the fans. And on the internet (and reddit maybe more than most) people project all their nonsense on to someone else.

And whilst I hate to admit it, some English folk do themselves and their countrymen no favours when they travel abroad and they do travel abroad more than, say french people who tend to stay in France. In a Spanish fairly classy town recently, I was absolutely cringing at the stag and hen does staggering around with tasteless hats whilst the Spaniards were sat in family groups, sipping wine and eating lovely food. I do think English (and dare I say it Scots and Irish - although their celtic charm/tartan or whatever seems to insulate them from criticism) should drink less if they want people to warm to them. The drinking culture in this country is out of control compared to the states and Europe.

Shoola · 12/07/2026 13:20

Football attracts a wide range of fans all over the world and they are not always the most open minded bunch.

Jealousy. Everyone wants to be British and feels inferior because they aren't. We are the epitome of something or other. Even though we are pretty shit.

Umm… I think, OP, that this attitude might give you a hint…..

most of the rest of the world does not feel inferior to England (which this poster seems to conflate with Britain), they really, genuinely don’t. There is a certain, and quite infuriating, arrogance to this attitude. You can be proud of your country and its sporting teams without being an arrogant twunt. Unfortunately England seem to have a too many of the twunts very visible- none more so than large sections of English media (even the bits that are supposed to be British, not solely English).

To be fair Scottish men are 10 times worse.
My husband worked abroad and always dreaded it when Scottish men came out on rotation. He was always having to do damage limitation for their behaviour. More often than not they couldn’t fly as they got drunk at the airport. When they were onshore they got completely drunk at night.
On one occasion one of them peed all over the furniture in the shared house and was fired the next day. Another was fired for groping a Virgin air steward. Another had to be put in the boot of a car and whisked out of the country for inappropriate behaviour. It was always a relief when the teams were from anywhere else in the world.

Argentina is the LEAST underdog in all of those remaining in World Cup terms! Look up how many times they have won, AND they are the current champions! England are the underdogs in the last four. So ignorant.

I don't need to imagine why the Irish wouldn't support England but the England in live in, he communities I live in and my family is representitive of the diversity of the English. As such this notion of 'the English' is a bit farcical and arguably racist as what it is to be English is always down to these sweeping generalisations on these threads. The English team represent the kind of Englishness I know and you'll find musically, culturally that is celebrated much more now. It's only these lazy stereotypes that people who perhaps live in less diverse countries come out with.

You know France colonised A LOT of countries too, right? As did the majority of Western Europe. Why are France less culpable for their colonisation than England? And again, England literally invented modern football so it would literally be coming home. Which is also just a catchy line from a bloody 30 year old song!

certainagedwoman · 12/07/2026 13:26

Not sure if this has already been posted, but after the post-match parties in Mexico City, many Mexican fans were happily saying that they will support England going forward.

i’ve also just seen a video of Norwegian fans after yesterday’s match Stating that they will now be supporting England, and that they’ve always supported English football

I think the England “hate” is exaggerated

Barely managed? Research that bit.

Why can't we be overwhelmingly white and lecture on tolerance? What's being white got to do with it?

English/British people are living tolerance on a daily basis. Working together, living together, having relationships, having children together. For most of Ireland tolerance, particularly racial tolerance, is a purely theoretical concept. But sure ‘history’ and ‘racist idiots’.

It depend what resort/ hotel you are visiting. Some have, for example, predominantly Dutch people being twats. Some have mostly German. Another issue is that in the UK more working class people can afford to go abroad than in some other European countries.

I'm not trying to defend English twats but saying they are the worst is a bit rich.
