Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

I think you think you have pricked this balloon of delusion for us English that the Irish viewpoint 'is' the viewpoint of the rest of the world but having Scandinavian family and having an insight from family who have worked all over the world and travelled extensively I don't think this is true at all. My Danish family say that the English sense of humour is very much liked and is familiar to them. We were watching the match with Norwegian friends last night. I am surprised about the hate feom the Finnish remarked upon on this thread as my Finnish friends don't show that at all and they are very direct. The reality is in London or SE England it is so muticultural and diverse much more so than Ireland that these rivalries would be ridiculous as reflected by the make up of the English team as opposed to the Scottish team for example.

I agree with that absolutely. I love english humour a lot. As i said in my first post on this thread there are a lot of fabulous thing in England.

i m not Irish and I do not believe that the Irish have the uiversal truth, or that anyone has it. I was given my reasons for not supporting england in sporting events, and my opinions as to why the englishs are disliked abroad. And gave a an example of a recent trip which made me racist and ignorant 🤣

What "irony" do we not get exactly?

Sense of humour - as in Noel Coward's ''Mad dogs the English man...etc''

I'd rather you answered my question. Please don't patronise me either. That's a disagreeable trait in any nationality.

What question?

TobyEsterhase · 12/07/2026 12:59

Left wingers hate successful nations (e.g USA, UK) as well as successful people.

This is because have a world view in which society is divided into the oppressers and victims so anyone who achieved anything MUST have exploited others

Such people are over represented on social media.

I thought a lot of the dislike and contempt for the English is to do with their disgraceful behaviour when on holiday in other people's countries.
Including their arrogance in not feeling the need to bother learning other people's languages.

The ex pats shite - you move to Spain from Britain, you are Johnny foreigner to the adopted country - an immigrant like others who have moved there. You aren't special because you are British and if you can't be bothered to learn the local lingo that's worse. The 'everyone speaks English anyway' argument is so entitled and rude.

I was hoping Norway would win, and Mexico before that, because of my workplace.

I'm already bracing myself for another day of getting the fake shock that I didn't watch the match. Last time I tried to say as neutrally as possible that I just don't have an interest in football, I got speeches about needing to learn the joy of coming together for English football. I've had speeches before that on needing patriotism. We had a region wide meeting last week that we were told was mandatory, and over half of it was spent on doing some sort of sweepstake draw where each site became associated with a remaining team. I get urgently marked emails that are just updates on the World Cup and how well England is doing. I don't want to piss on other people's fun, but it does get tiresome.

It is an English quirk I've noticed - the media and wider culture gets really focused and obsessed on something to the point it's difficult to escape if not a hermit and it can be treated as personal slight against those who do like it to not get involved. There is a strange idea that we either love it or hate England - there are many other options.

And many also emigrated to England strange that?

And people still immigrate to the US in far larger numbers even with immigrants and those presumed to be immigrants getting shot. Saudi Arabia gets a lot of immigrants too.

Most people do not migrate to a place because it's the best of the best - marriage, family, or money are often the main factors and being slightly better and having a route to do so can be enough.

Maybe they boast about it in front of you as you insist on calling a game that invented, 'soccer'.

Soccer comes from the English. The name was invented in Oxford and Brits called it both football and soccer for decades until the 1960ish when it became seen as 'too American' to use over here with rising anti-American sentiments.

You don't think the Norwegian press or their fans were just as obsessed last night? Another match headline:

"FIFA World Cup 2026: Norway city feels tremors after Haaland’s goals for vs Iraq"

Marycontrarygarden · 12/07/2026 13:01

Awful awful story. Google the protests after the event.

Have a drink and watch the finals of Wimbledon.

bestchooseanother · 12/07/2026 13:03

NRFT but I think it's because we ourselves have encouraged it. People rarely complain about Spanish, Dutch, Belgian, Arabic, Zulu etc imperialism as they would just shrug. We're the only ones who lament and grovel, with a kind of arrogance that we were definitely the worst of the very worst, the very best at being bad. Sometimes it seems more like we're actually bragging about the extent of our empire, rather than expressing any genuine remorse. We certainly seem happier pretending we were the only ones who ever colonised anyone; we're never keen to talk about anyone else's empire, even though almost all were arguably far crueller, if not so large.

So we annoy people who believe us when we announce that we are the vilest humans ever to emerge, and that all the world's ills are our fault. And we annoy people who feel our endless banging on about how enormously powerful we were/are under the guise of pathetic self-recrimination is solipsistic, self-aggrandising and self-indulgent. I've personally experienced far more people point out that they too had empires, actually, than people complaining about ours. In fact, over many years of travel though ex-colonies, the only person I recall ever criticising the empire was an Egyptian man, who seemed entirely unaware of any previous colonisers, or how Egypt fell under British rule. Ironically, he was an Arab... Otherwise, it's only ever well-off British people, mostly white, enjoying the fruits of centuries of imperialism while bemoaning how dreadfully terrible they feel about it all.

My Danish family appreciate the English sense of humour as it is very similar, it's not about the Irish not having a sense of humour, we all know that!

No - it’s just you who likes to think they do.
I have lived in Scotland and so I get why you hate us so much. It’s so much better down here believe me.
Now, whilst having a leisurely morning in the glorious sun, basking in the England win, I will now gear myself up for the Wimbledon final. The best tennis tournament in the world.
47 million pints drunk in pubs last night, billions of pounds boosting our economy,. Just seen the weather in Aberdeen - hardly mind blowing and very very bleak.

47 million PINTS 😱

But you were very much promoting the idea of the Irish viewpoint of the English being universal. It absolutely isn't. Are you thinking of Mediterranean European countries?

dannyufcfan · 12/07/2026 13:07

You're reading english language media often filled with our traditional sporting rivals.

Most of the world doesn't give a shit if england win or not. We're not that important.

England also has anti-racist protests.

Irish exceptionalism is one of my favourite types of exceptionalism. An overwhelmingly white nation, that’s barely managed to shake off the shackles of religion, lecturing everyone else on tolerance.

Obviously she didn’t see the mayhem and celebrations of Norway and Mexico before their matches. Norway were out on the streets celebrating, Mexico was at a standstill.
But dare the English want to celebrate.
She sounds like the Office Fun Sponge, sucking the life out of every bit of joy.

There's always been a fair amount of 'anyone but England' in football, but I agree Reddit has been particularly bad this World Cup. I wonder if a fair bit isn't Russian bots stirring up discord - even this thread feels like a load of bots arguing back and forth and raising the level of vitriol until we all hate each other.

Barely managed? Research that bit.

Why can't we be overwhelmingly white and lecture on tolerance? What's being white got to do with it?
