Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

I think the Spanish have every right to detest the English on the basis of the revolting behaviour of so many ‘English’ tourists. If I were a Spaniard living in Magaluf, I’d hate us too.

Have you any idea how German tourists in Mallorca behave?

(some German tourists like some ‘English’, actually British, tourists)

Marycontrarygarden · 12/07/2026 12:50

Many many reason....brits abroad - awful
English football hooligans - disgusting
Brexit - racist idiots
Tommy Robinson et Al - racist scumbags
And finally... colonisation

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

I think Polish, Dutch and French football thugs are as bad if not worse.

Your ignorance Bubbles is shocking. But widespread in your country.
Probably why so many successful Scottish people move South.
Crikey even Sturgeon has decided it’s better down here. That says it all really.
I once went on a cheap holiday and there were crowds of men from Shots, wearing kilts and pushing trolleys of alcohol around. Their language and behaviour upset the locals. So using your theory, this must be widespread behaviour of Scottish people abroad????

🤣 love at the ignorance comment. Today i am a racist and an ignorant. You got to love it 🤣🤣🤣

It’s a debate love. I’m debating.

Have you ever actually lived in England?
Where are the roots of your hatred and misinformation?

TheBrunswick · 12/07/2026 12:51

lovecotswoldsliving · 12/07/2026 12:49

A small minority in Shagaluf?
But plenty from Scotland too. Except they just call everyone English.

Pre dc, dh and I always avoided the 2 weeks in summer when the Scots went on holiday because their behaviour was mostly appalling.

Marycontrarygarden · 12/07/2026 12:51

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

Oh major lol..... absolutely no one thinks that 🙄🤣🤣🤣

Most of the people on Reddit are American and there seems to be an assumption that the English see the USA as a former colony. This is odd to the English because we don’t. But that’s where the resentment comes from, I think.

Erm

Goldenbear · 12/07/2026 12:52

Bubblesgun · 12/07/2026 12:18

I was giving an example.

do i think it is representative of a whole country? No
do i think it is a widespread attitude? Yes

i wasnt discussing the americans because i clicked in a thread that ask about the english

I think you think you have pricked this balloon of delusion for us English that the Irish viewpoint 'is' the viewpoint of the rest of the world but having Scandinavian family and having an insight from family who have worked all over the world and travelled extensively I don't think this is true at all. My Danish family say that the English sense of humour is very much liked and is familiar to them. We were watching the match with Norwegian friends last night. I am surprised about the hate feom the Finnish remarked upon on this thread as my Finnish friends don't show that at all and they are very direct. The reality is in London or SE England it is so muticultural and diverse much more so than Ireland that these rivalries would be ridiculous as reflected by the make up of the English team as opposed to the Scottish team for example.

That’s great ‘love’. Nice weather here, England winning again. We’re happy not aggrieved. You? Irritated for no reason who knows.

I was hoping Norway would win, and Mexico before that, because of my workplace.

I'm already bracing myself for another day of getting the fake shock that I didn't watch the match. Last time I tried to say as neutrally as possible that I just don't have an interest in football, I got speeches about needing to learn the joy of coming together for English football. I've had speeches before that on needing patriotism. We had a region wide meeting last week that we were told was mandatory, and over half of it was spent on doing some sort of sweepstake draw where each site became associated with a remaining team. I get urgently marked emails that are just updates on the World Cup and how well England is doing. I don't want to piss on other people's fun, but it does get tiresome.

It is an English quirk I've noticed - the media and wider culture gets really focused and obsessed on something to the point it's difficult to escape if not a hermit and it can be treated as personal slight against those who do like it to not get involved. There is a strange idea that we either love it or hate England - there are many other options.

And many also emigrated to England strange that?

And people still immigrate to the US in far larger numbers even with immigrants and those presumed to be immigrants getting shot. Saudi Arabia gets a lot of immigrants too.

Most people do not migrate to a place because it's the best of the best - marriage, family, or money are often the main factors and being slightly better and having a route to do so can be enough.

Maybe they boast about it in front of you as you insist on calling a game that invented, 'soccer'.

Soccer comes from the English. The name was invented in Oxford and Brits called it both football and soccer for decades until the 1960ish when it became seen as 'too American' to use over here with rising anti-American sentiments.

I thought a lot of the dislike and contempt for the English is to do with their disgraceful behaviour when on holiday in other people's countries.
Including their arrogance in not feeling the need to bother learning other people's languages.

I’ve tried speaking local languages when on holiday. But people just laugh at me and tell me to ‘just speak English, it’s easier.’
Do you mean we should all be fluent before we travel anywhere?

PPs are right that the overwhelming majority of the world's population don't get irony!

It's sort of amusing that while English is increasingly the global language, idiomatic nuanced English, irony and friendly sarcasm remains baffling for most as it simply doesn't exist as a concept in most other languages!

What "irony" do we not get exactly?

IBut they will appreciate the fact you make an effort to speak their language.
It's the trying that matters, not the fluency.

It's the Internet. You can find support for any point of view. You just need to change your algorithms by searching "Lovely English..." Don't get distracted by anything which isn't positive.

I'd rather you answered my question. Please don't patronise me either. That's a disagreeable trait in any nationality.
