Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

There is a difference between hating or disliking a nation for what it stands for and hating the people from there. Many people hate the USA, it doesn't mean they dislike people from there. We all seem to hate Russia these days. Anyone who isn't an idiot knows the current government or a historical government do not represent everybody.

As @SuddenLightbulbputs it, the 'colonial past' is not so long ago. Many NI residents believe its still ongoing. Add to that the fact Brexit pissed off a lot of Europeans, some awful representatives of UK in the past and an immensely wealthy country who have a free health system, there is a sense of wanting to root for the underdog. Sadly many English behave disrespectfully abroad, I know most don't but we are all ambassadors for our nation when we leave it. Many times I've heard an English person on holidays addressing a local in English without even asking if this is OK. There could be 10 others acting politely but that's what others remember. Then there is the soccer itself, English fans haven't been the best behaved historically. People feel that if the English win they won't be dignified winners, they will be boasting about it forever not as a victory in soccer but as a reflection of their self believed superiority. All this adds up to people not wanting England to win. Me included..however I have a great love of English people and culture. It's actually not personal to most.

Maybe they boast about it in front of you as you insist on calling a game that invented, 'soccer'.

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

"Its because we're awesome"

Perfect illustration of why England is so disliked.

Most teams are mid. Mostly qualify, sometimes get to a semi, rarely win.

Thats England too. But the tone and tenor of the discussion is always that it’s yours for the taking and you’re somehow entitled to it.

You’ve not been good enough in my five decades 🤷‍♀️

Scotland are shite but we kinda prefer it that way. You guys are alright, but you’re often deeply aggrieved by that.

No way not aggrieved here, it’s brilliant to make the semis. You do sound a bit annoyed on this thread though.

MrsPapillon · 12/07/2026 12:40

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 12:29

I don’t care particularly. But an entire lifetime of ‘we are sooooo awesome but nobody loves us’ is a bit vomit inducing.

If you want to be loved, be a little humble; people love an underdog with humility and the love of the game in their hearts.

With the England football team, it all seems to be carried out in aggrieved tones of entitlement. I don’t think that’s true for other sports. You guys have fostered an unpleasant character as a footballing nation.

The fact you’re on here discussing it means you feel it, but I don’t know how you will set about changing it.

I just don’t see where you get that from at all. Maybe from the media, but certainly not the man on the street. Genuinely, I am completely baffled. We are a nation who have made a national sport of putting ourselves down and taking the piss out of ourselves. If you compare our superlatives to the USA for example, their “AWESOME!!!!” would be our “not too shabby”. Bragging is seen as a very negative character trait in England.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 12/07/2026 12:40

@Dorisbonsonyou are not wrong but there is a massive timeline difference and that is very relevant. People love ancient Roman history because it is so long ago. Many of the atrocities committed by England are only a century or two ago, so there is only few generations and stories are still being passed down. I don't think its right to hate anyone for the sins of their fathers but I understand why you wouldn't be rooting for the nation that abused your great grandparents either.

I was giving an example.

do i think it is representative of a whole country? No
do i think it is a widespread attitude? Yes

i wasnt discussing the americans because i clicked in a thread that ask about the english

Your ignorance Bubbles is shocking. But widespread in your country.
Probably why so many successful Scottish people move South.
Crikey even Sturgeon has decided it’s better down here. That says it all really.
I once went on a cheap holiday and there were crowds of men from Shots, wearing kilts and pushing trolleys of alcohol around. Their language and behaviour upset the locals. So using your theory, this must be widespread behaviour of Scottish people abroad????

What makes you think you're being talked about except for when you're being obnoxious? Generally the rest of us don't give a toss one way or the other.

You missed the interviews with the Norwegian fans then? Overwhelmingly saying that if they lost then they wanted England to win.

There are loads of nations and national teams that various other countries ‘hate’ as much or more than the English. Americans. The French. Argentina.

As has been said 700 times, it comes from the media and pundits.

JanesClinic · 12/07/2026 12:43

What are they going to be like if we win it! Seething...heehee 😂

Bring it on England 👑

Speakeasier · 12/07/2026 11:21

That’s why I don’t read the British press. It’s appalling. But it’s not even owned by British people largely. It’s often in foreign ownership and they just love to whip up xenophobia for some reason. I have to block it from all my SM because they write such drivel.

But honestly the average British fan over here never thinks we’re going to win.

Are Britain in it?

Where I live in Scotland is dripping with English immigrants telling locals how to run their communities.

Strugeon has moved south because she is a perjurer and everybody knows it.

DirtyBird · 12/07/2026 12:45

It’s the same as on MN where America is always talked badly about. Which I find odd because the US is huge with lots of different people but we are always bashed as if we are all alike. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Differentforgirls · 12/07/2026 12:45

SunConure · 12/07/2026 11:22

It’s mostly envy. That we as a tiny nation are able to compete on the world stage in the way that we do which is totally disproportionate to our size. We’ve produced some of the worlds best sportspeople, musicians, writers, scientists and not only that, we keep on doing so. Despite all the odds, despite Brexit and the political shambles we find ourselves in. People love the underdog and Britain is almost never the underdog. Taking the dog theme a bit further Dale Carnegie said “no one kicks a dead dog” meaning the fact you’re getting criticism means you’re alive and doing things. We are individualists who don’t toe the line which infuriates people who prioritise conformity. We are also a bit cocky and steal
sun loungers which doesn’t help.

Britain?

Ponoka7 · 12/07/2026 12:46

Thelondonone · 12/07/2026 08:56

Im not sure it is because of the British empire. It’s because some British people behave appallingly when they go to other places. My dad follows England home and away, he manages not to get blind drink, insult people wherever he goes or fight. Although this World Cup has been extortionate and terrible for the environment he has had a great time as the coked up knob heads that often go to England games are not there (I’m not going to call them fans as that is offensive to the rest of us who are decent human beings). I assume these people are priced out.

Have you seen the footage of Morrocan fans in London? Do you follow football fan news and hear about the stabbings from non English teams? People seemed to be determined that English fans are the worst, when, while arrogant, entitled etc, we aren't deliberately creating a violent environment.

Everyone’s happy here to be through to the semis. We have some excellent players. This we hate you stuff is better left on Reddit.

I think the Spanish have every right to detest the English on the basis of the revolting behaviour of so many ‘English’ tourists. If I were a Spaniard living in Magaluf, I’d hate us too.

But if you look at the people who committed those atrocities - the ruling classes, the wealthy landowners, the slave traders. Those same people also terrorised the English.

Most English people descended from peasant labourers, who had their land stolen and whose families starved to death to pay extortionate rents to their wealthy overlords. That tiny band of powerful elites were our enemy too.

We are not your enemy.
