Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

I was waiting for Brexit to rearrange its head.
I dont think any other country cares if we are part of the European Union or not.

Oh, I think a number of European countries care, not least because it made life more expensive for them. Plus they may have seen it as a bit of a V-sign to them.

But perhaps most of all, because it just made us look stupid, which obviously tended to dent our credibility in all areas.

Amazing how people hate the British Empire!

Roman Empire - amazing, slavery overlooked forgotten etc.
Greeks - Amazing, slaughtered cities and people
Various Muslim Empires - Slaughtered and burned cities. Charges non Muslims higher taxes and refuses to allow non Muslims to convert (certain Arabic empires).
UK - Worked with local populations and rulers to minimise rebellion. Outlawed slavery (before most of the rest of the world) and enforced that law around the world to the extent that 25% of the royal navy sailing near Africa died enforcing that law. UK is hated yet British laws, democracy and standard kept after UK leaves countries.
China - Has informal empire, uses belt and road programs to provide infrastructure but makes local populations pay for it. Injects 2nd born children with formaldehyde in their brain minutes after birth until the 1990s and early 2000s - still elected to country Chair of UN Human Rights councils
Oman - outlaws slavery in 1970s told how amazingly liberal it is.
India after UK has left - mass rape beatings, racism and sexism tolerated and normalized. UK is apparently the problem. Various lies told about how UK stole wealth from India (great example roof of the Taj Mahal supposedly gold stolen by a British soldier - except soldier died penniless and the amount of Gold on the roof would have been 20% of the total amount of Gold in existence in the world at the time of construction eg lies)

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

Please define "many". I'd say it's a tiny minority, a similar minority to other nations who suffer similar thuggery, such as France and in fact throughout Europe. In the UK we've actually made some good progress to stamp out the worst of the football hooliganism.

French football violence fires up far right ahead of 2027 election and World Cup

Riots fuel right-wing demands for harsher stance on immigration.

You know all of those gammony, uneducated, frothing at the mouth, chip-eating, pissed up twats who love to get punchy after a few too many pints?

They go on holidays.

TheWonderhorse · 12/07/2026 09:32

We did last time!

Yes, we were utter shit throughout, but we did qualify!

Edited

Plus look at the population - it’s more like a city team qualifying for the World Cup! Amazing it happened at all (especially since the main grassroots game is still rugby).

Don't let the facts get in the way of those who hate Britain!

Middle Eastern countries were heavily involved in the African slave trade for example.

In my very humble opinion it’s not colonisation. It’s the human instinct to support the underdog and root for the unlikely winner. And in many football competitions national confidence in the English side ‘bringing it home’ etc rubs people up the wrong way.

Supporting the underdog? It’s hardly like England have been dominating the football scene, we haven’t won a major tournament in 60 years

IndigoBrave · 12/07/2026 12:26

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

”we are awesome” 😂

based on what…not football or fans behaving

MrsPapillon · 12/07/2026 12:27

Bubblesgun · 12/07/2026 12:18

I was giving an example.

do i think it is representative of a whole country? No
do i think it is a widespread attitude? Yes

i wasnt discussing the americans because i clicked in a thread that ask about the english

My point is, it was a complete non-event. He asked, he was denied. Nobody sat round saying “Shock! Look at that entitled American demanding fries! They all expect to eat the same shit they eat back home”. Yet an Englishman does it and suddenly we’re all embarrassing savages who all demand to be fed our national cuisine everywhere we go.

For the record, I have never once been on holiday and seen English people eating a full English or fish and chips. Probably because I’ve never been to Benidorm or Magaluf. Like the majority of people, I go on holiday to enjoying experiencing other cultures and food.

VickyEadie · 12/07/2026 12:27

Whattheflock · 12/07/2026 08:59

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

For the hundredth time... "It's coming home" is from a song written in 1996, when England hosted the Euros and the phrase was (first of all, before the song) the strapline of the contest, reflecting the fact that football was invented in England.

The song was written as a bittersweet reflection on the fact that England have only won one major championship, despite the fact that they should be able to challenge much better than they do. It's about England fans being constantly disappointd by failure.

It is NOT about having any sort of "right" to win the world cup or any other championship.

Overtheatlantic · 12/07/2026 09:43

I dislike the English because they actively dislike Americans. They also lack self awareness, much like the Americans.

the English don’t dislike Americans, we import a lot (especially tv from America). We just dislike trump.

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 12:29

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 12:15

Oh you definitely care. But why?

I don’t care particularly. But an entire lifetime of ‘we are sooooo awesome but nobody loves us’ is a bit vomit inducing.

If you want to be loved, be a little humble; people love an underdog with humility and the love of the game in their hearts.

With the England football team, it all seems to be carried out in aggrieved tones of entitlement. I don’t think that’s true for other sports. You guys have fostered an unpleasant character as a footballing nation.

The fact you’re on here discussing it means you feel it, but I don’t know how you will set about changing it.

I’m English so of course you’re going to find me unlikeable. I’ve actually got Irish grandparents on both sides fwiw.
i just think any country in England’s current position in the WC should allowed to celebrate even if people find the song annoying - so what, there’s enough doom and gloom in the world.

I quite like my English husband 🤣

Dontlletmedownbruce · 12/07/2026 12:32

There is a difference between hating or disliking a nation for what it stands for and hating the people from there. Many people hate the USA, it doesn't mean they dislike people from there. We all seem to hate Russia these days. Anyone who isn't an idiot knows the current government or a historical government do not represent everybody.

As @SuddenLightbulbputs it, the 'colonial past' is not so long ago. Many NI residents believe its still ongoing. Add to that the fact Brexit pissed off a lot of Europeans, some awful representatives of UK in the past and an immensely wealthy country who have a free health system, there is a sense of wanting to root for the underdog. Sadly many English behave disrespectfully abroad, I know most don't but we are all ambassadors for our nation when we leave it. Many times I've heard an English person on holidays addressing a local in English without even asking if this is OK. There could be 10 others acting politely but that's what others remember. Then there is the soccer itself, English fans haven't been the best behaved historically. People feel that if the English win they won't be dignified winners, they will be boasting about it forever not as a victory in soccer but as a reflection of their self believed superiority. All this adds up to people not wanting England to win. Me included..however I have a great love of English people and culture. It's actually not personal to most.

Why mid anyway?

I have a group of online friends - we’re all from England, Ireland, Finland, Germany and Egypt. We all get on fabulously but the venom from Finland and Ireland towards the Brits at times like this, and just general Brit Bashing if we big ourselves up, makes me laugh. The hate is real.

So do they bash all four nations?

By Gammony, do you mean white people?

If so, you insult me, my children, my parents, my ancestors. Who the fuck are you to do that.

You want to remember that white people have done a lot of fucking good in this world and continue to do so. I didn't see them running to Aboriginal people when they were looking for a cure for Covid, Cancer or Aids. Did You? If so, I stand to be corrected.

There are plenty of nationalities a damn sight worse or do you really think that there aren't. Maybe you haven't travelled.

What the English need to do now is go to India and knock down every fucking building that they built, pull up every railway line they laid and drive a bulldozer through the streets they laid out.

They also need to stop giving money to people who hate them.

Then these places can be free of their colonial oppression. Triple gins all round!

localnotail · 12/07/2026 12:35

I think its a weird manifestation of an obsession. Its like Russia has this weird love/ hate relationship with the US - hating them but also wanting to be them (to the point that pretty much every single Russian program on their TV is a copy of a US one).

Everyone hates England but also goes absolutely nuts for all things English. Its hilarious.

Re Argentina being the underdog - dot make me laugh.

Bigtrapeze · 12/07/2026 09:22

Me too, because most people are fabulous, warm welcoming folk, as are the majority of English people when travelling. In my experience being English doesn't amount to being treated unkindly at all but I do sometimes still feel a little apologetic when someone of the same nationality has chosen to go to a different country but then is openly disappointed at any differences between home and their new destination. To me, this is the point of travel but perhaps not to all, sadly. Other nationalities do definitely behave badly when travelling I am sure.

It’s not just English people who disparage the food etc. of another country.

A dd once shared accommodation in Cambodia with half a dozen Italians, several of whom would never even try the local food and lived off pizza and pasta.

And it was years ago now, but I still remember the Greek Cypriot neighbour (we were all living in a Gulf country) who went on holiday to Thailand.
After she returned I asked her how it went.
‘It was all right, but I don’t think it’s as nice as Cyprus.’ 😂

Goldenbear · 12/07/2026 12:36

Shakeoffyourchains · 12/07/2026 11:47

😂 it's the arrogance and behaviour of your fans. That's it.

This World Cup has shown it perfectly. Scotland, Norway, Mexico, Morocco, etc, etc go across and party with everyone, involve everyone, get along with everyone.

England fans go across and sing 'get your tits out for the lads' and 'your shit and your fans are shit', while mocking every other nation.

Maybe not ever England fan does that but thats what's filling up SM feeds and news channels.

Perhaps it's your social media algorithms that are making you believe that.

They go on holidays.

They do. And they tend to go to particular destinations. Sadly some resorts in Spain, Spanish islands and Greek islands have been absolutely destroyed by decades of cheap tourism.

If you go to the parts of Europe that Jet2 don’t offer packages and flights to, you see a different type of English tourist. Typically the type that makes attempts to use the local language (often badly, but nonetheless well-intentioned) and is enthusiastic about embracing the local culture, food and way of life. I wouldn’t go on holiday with someone who just wanted to go to the Costa del Sol and eat fish and chips.

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 12:38

EasternStandard · 12/07/2026 12:34

Why mid anyway?

Most teams are mid. Mostly qualify, sometimes get to a semi, rarely win.

Thats England too. But the tone and tenor of the discussion is always that it’s yours for the taking and you’re somehow entitled to it.

You’ve not been good enough in my five decades 🤷‍♀️

Scotland are shite but we kinda prefer it that way. You guys are alright, but you’re often deeply aggrieved by that.
