Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

“very recently at a 5stars hotel in Madrid, a groupd of English were telling off the waiter for not cooking the bacon properly after asking for “real food” and not iberico ham and cheese, and for not knowing how to make a cup of tea - i was ashamed of them representing England abroad) doesnt do your country any justice.”

Course they did.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

I think you misunderstand - it’s not because the English believe they have a right to win everything, it because the modern game of football was invented there. So, if the English win it is going home…back to the home of football.

Having lived in plenty of counties in my time I can safely say that in the league table of countries that are ‘unbearable’ when they win something international, there are plenty of countries I’d put above a England / Great Britain / the UK!!

But the English people alive right now played no part in that.

I was correcting an inaccuracy on that posters post!

800 years of the British ruling Ireland???? I have seen and heard a lot of strange things, but this is up there.
It was in 1600 (400 years ago) when the "Plantation of Ulster" took place, with the influx of Scottish and English settlers, which was the catalyst for the religious split in Northern Ireland.
Then Cromwell conquered Ireland between 1649 and 1653.
Then there was the Battle of the Boyne in 1689 and the uprisings by Irish Catholic Republicans from 1789, which led to the ultimate Easter uprising of 1916.

From wikipedia. But thank you 🤣

Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

It’s not that mid. It’s worth celebrating, as anyone else would if they were in the semis

Your pp did say ‘we hate you’ which seems full on

Edited

I was following the tone set by the OP, which literally said hate in the title 🤷‍♀️

@Poppingby is this a joke? Some other country’s fans make monkey noises and throw bananas on the pitch when black players come on.

Lewis Hamilton has been continually racially abused in the Spanish Grand Prix. Monkey noises and so on. It's not an english issue completely.

Did you read the post they were quoting?

That poster was talking about Andy Murray.

Apparently, Andy Murray is British when he wins, but Scottish when he loses.

So assume the poster meant we could say the same about the Stones, Beatles etc

They're English, but media say British.

The Andy Murray thing makes me laugh- what a load of shite.

Yes, I read the comment, but I'm pointing out that it's not true that the Beatles etc. aren't seen as English.

What is so bad about being excited to think that we might bring the world cup home? Does this only apply to England fans?
Maybe its just jealousy? We have brought it home once already and are 2 games away from doing it again.
Which is more than Scotland have 🤣

There is nothing wrong with having hope and being excited about the possibility of winning. (In Scotland we know we're pish but we can dream 🤣). The problem is the media pundits constantly bring England and 66 into their commentary even when England aren't playing in that particular game so we dread how awful the commentary would get if you actually do win it again. 🤪

If I had £1 for every time I heard "800 years of oppression" as a child (English, relocated to Ireland, to my grandparents house where my dad grew up), I'd be a rich woman. Don't bother bringing logic into it.

My mother was Catholic from Northern Ireland, so, back in the sixties, the "troubles" were a very real thing for us, particularly as we had relatives in Derry.

Waitingfordoggo · 12/07/2026 12:04

ShouldKnowBetterButNeverLearn · 12/07/2026 09:22

In Scotland, we are constantly bombarded by the media about the England football team. How they are going to win, 1966 is brought up every 5 minutes, the arrogance of assuming England are going to win. it's relentless.
I've been watching most of the World Cup games, even during non England games, the commentators still bring up the England team, the players etc even though it's got nothing to do with the current match!
England last won the world cup 60 years ago but it's still assumed they will win every time.
I was supporting Norway last night, they started off really well.
Just to say I have English family, friends and colleagues so it's not personal, the media definitely fuels it all.

I just really don’t recognise this idea that the English assume they’re going to win. Maybe the media portrays that idea but I don’t think it’s what all the fans are thinking. All of the football fans I know go into each World Cup or European Championship with the same cheerful optimism which hides a fear that we’ll most likely fail again. What would be the point of starting out saying ‘Well, we’re bound to lose again, let’s not even watch the tournament’?

‘It’s Coming Home’ was a line from one of the football songs. It’s a sound bite; short and catchy and easy to bellow at the top of your voice to a vague ‘tune’. Most of us saying and singing it don’t necessarily actually believe it 😂

That’s isn’t unique to Britain at all, many European countries are also racist a thugs and badly behaved.

Who mentioned Britain?

@EssCarGo Go on any social media report about England winning a game and you will see people in the comments literally hating a nation. Mostly the Scot’s, who claim ‘it’s not just us everyone hates you.’ 🤣

No - it’s just you who likes to think they do.
I have lived in Scotland and so I get why you hate us so much. It’s so much better down here believe me.
Now, whilst having a leisurely morning in the glorious sun, basking in the England win, I will now gear myself up for the Wimbledon final. The best tennis tournament in the world.
47 million pints drunk in pubs last night, billions of pounds boosting our economy,. Just seen the weather in Aberdeen - hardly mind blowing and very very bleak.

Breakfastinthesunshine · 12/07/2026 12:08

Untrue. The british army were protecting the goods leaving ireland to feed England. There would have been enough for Irish people but they had to see their food leave on boats.

there were soup kitchens but only if you cinverted to church of england.

the attitude during that time and from 1916 to 1922 was bad, then came the troubles and again the military did the worst things in NI because it was condonned by your government

But my point is ( and I speak from experience of family and friends) it wasn’t akin to the holocaust

The food wasn’t being exported BECAUSE the English wanted the Irish to die

And my other point is, that if I truly believed the English had systematically wanted to starve my countrymen to death, then no way could o bear to live in that country
