Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

1000 replies

englandd · 12/07/2026 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Fan behavior + general meme/trendy-ness of it...

It isn't for any historical reason - I mean if you want to back to empire times, the French, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, don't get the same hate.. If you want to go for more modern examples, the German and Japanese don't get much hate despite their atrocities.

For me, it started with general fan behavior, the attitude of traveling fans, arrogance of media mismatching the performances etc. And then it just spirals to become the "trendy" thing to join in on.

The same thing happens with domestic football - right now Arsenal (even before they were the champions) have been the club to dislike for a while.. People cite fans, attitudes, behavior online, but never really any specific reasons, it just becomes the done thing, and people get on board.

--

Also for those saying that it is because people like to cheer for the underdog, so we will be rooted for more against Argentina... no chance! Argentina are so popular, world wide, all because of Messi - I don't live in the U.K. but instead a country that is not even in the world cup, and Argentina is a clear favorite here, and it is just because they love and know of Messi...

The only places that will be cheering for us next match will be Argentina's direct rivals, and the countries they just knocked out... I don't think we will have ever had such support coming from Egypt..

Do you actually hate

Which country are you in?

No, we hate how the media rams the England team’s mid successes down the throats of all the nations in Britain. It’s cringe and a bit desperate, and we are heartily sick of it.

I’m Scottish with an English husband. I don’t hate English people. This thread is about football.

NickSaidSheWasDull · 12/07/2026 11:54

Ha ha. This thread proves how lovely the Brits are, yet again. Are we actually the only people in the world with a wide ranging sense of humour?!

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 11:40

Fine by me, I’ve no skin in the game 🤷‍♀️

But your answer IS the reason. We don’t hate you cos you’re brilliant. We hate you because you believe you are without winning very much at all, and constantly go on and on about it as if it was an entitlement.

Basically, nobody likes a show off. And people laugh at show offs who don’t really have the goods to back it up.

As I said im sorry this gets under your skin but we are gunna keep on dancing at the pink pony club

Absolutely not true and especially since Brexit. Of all my english friends, those who could get a european passport got one as soon as they could.

i have lived in London for a long time and moved back to europe 2 yrs after the brexit vote.

there are many fabulous thing in england but your superiority over everyone is tedious and irritating.

i love NI and since moving to Ireland, i have read extensively about the 800 yrs of ruling Iteland and the Troubles.

french will always love and support Ireland, Wales and Scotland. It is to do that Westminster couldnt care less but other countries that form the UK see NI particularly.

yes the behaviours of some at sporting events (football and rugby especially) is really rude, yes the fact you do not bother learning the culture of the countries you visit (very recently at a 5stars hotel in Madrid, a groupd of English were telling off the waiter for not cooking the bacon properly after asking for “real food” and not iberico ham and cheese, and for not knowing how to make a cup of tea - i was ashamed of them representing England abroad) doesnt do your country any justice. It is very hard to ignore.

irish, scottish and welsh when travelling abroad dont necessarily speak another language or try out the food, but they are respectful and polite.

so as much i love my english friends, i will never support england.

800 years of the British ruling Ireland???? I have seen and heard a lot of strange things, but this is up there.
It was in 1600 (400 years ago) when the "Plantation of Ulster" took place, with the influx of Scottish and English settlers, which was the catalyst for the religious split in Northern Ireland.
Then Cromwell conquered Ireland between 1649 and 1653.
Then there was the Battle of the Boyne in 1689 and the uprisings by Irish Catholic Republicans from 1789, which led to the ultimate Easter uprising of 1916.

Shakeoffyourchains · 12/07/2026 11:47

😂 it's the arrogance and behaviour of your fans. That's it.

This World Cup has shown it perfectly. Scotland, Norway, Mexico, Morocco, etc, etc go across and party with everyone, involve everyone, get along with everyone.

England fans go across and sing 'get your tits out for the lads' and 'your shit and your fans are shit', while mocking every other nation.

Maybe not ever England fan does that but thats what's filling up SM feeds and news channels.

Actually the chant is "you're shit, but your birds are fit". So they give credit where it's due...

It’s not your awesomeness 🤣🤣

England are a quite good team. You don’t win all that much. You’re quite good.

Everyone laughs at you for just the sentiment you expressed.

You definitely dont get English humour Grin

ThisISmycircusandtheseAREmymonkeys · 12/07/2026 11:55

ThisISmycircusandtheseAREmymonkeys · 12/07/2026 11:48

Spot on.

Absolutely crap.
They have been amazing and you know it.
Come on send the media links where English fans have been badly behaved. I am waiting.
You know it. Full of joy, excitement and cheering on one of the best teams in the world.
Meanwhile you lot can’t admit it’s all about hatred and bitterness. Get over yourselves and leave England alone.

ThisISmycircusandtheseAREmymonkeys · 12/07/2026 11:47

I’m not from the UK either and I agree with this. No hate though.

Just got home from Stansted airport and why is it that there are alwaya so many parents from the UK that behave like abusive assholes to their children. Screaming in their faces even though they are crying, swearing and making threats. It’s absolutely awful.
If it had happened where I live people would call the police.

Your Irish part is not that knowledgeable then! You don’t seem to know that food was being exported to the UK from Irish ports while our ancestors were starving? How is that not deliberate?

But the English people alive right now played no part in that.

ThunderThunderThunderThunderCats · 12/07/2026 11:56

WeeDote · 12/07/2026 11:43

The difference is that Germany as a country are apologetic, make sure to teach about their part in the Holocaust in schools, and want to make sure nothing like that ever happens again

England swept it all under the carpet, not only refusing to accept responsibility for a lot of what went on in NI but outright covering it up, and refusing to teach Irish history so most English people who haven't a clue about what their country has done relatively recently never mind historically

There's an air of arrogance about the whole thing, and many English people still look down their noses at the Irish, and I think this is noticed by many other countries, in particular the United States where so many Irish had to flee to because of the English

I've never come across any English person (in person or online) who looks down at the Irish! A LOT of British people especially here in the NW are of Irish descent. Literally half Irish on my dad's side, both Northern and Southern Ireland.

andfinallyhereweare · 12/07/2026 11:56

Bubblesgun · 12/07/2026 11:46

Untrue. The british army were protecting the goods leaving ireland to feed England. There would have been enough for Irish people but they had to see their food leave on boats.

there were soup kitchens but only if you cinverted to church of england.

the attitude during that time and from 1916 to 1922 was bad, then came the troubles and again the military did the worst things in NI because it was condonned by your government

It’s very well documented that it was deliberate, (I have a degree in Irish history). Also the troubles was not the famine, that’s two different parts of Irish history by about 100 years.

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 11:57

Oh it isn’t just football, and you know it isn’t. Anyway, I started the post because I genuinely don’t get how some people have the mentality to really hate a nation. As I said in my op, I would’ve been happy to support Norway going through, but then I saw a comment on Reddit from a Norwegian saying fuck England you all deserve to lose etc etc, and that isn’t me “attention seeking” as you so nicely put it lol it was what prompted me to come on here and ask the question.

People don’t ‘hate’ the nation, for gods sake 🤣

You’re not that brilliant or interesting. It’s not that deep.

But people turn up here going ‘you hate us because we’re awesome wwaaahhhh’ and it’s just embarrassing. As if the England team is the centre of the world and we all spend time sitting around thinking of new and inventive ways to dislike you.

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

This post nails it! 👏👏

It’s not that mid. It’s worth celebrating, as anyone else would if they were in the semis

Your pp did say ‘we hate you’ which seems full on

But if Scotland had got through to the semi-finals instead of England pretty much every England fan would be watching and supporting them.

Mid successes? We are in the final FOUR.
How many goals did Scotland score again?
oh yes - one.
Thats hardly success is it?

Again, you should have replied asking why they have a player who shared child sexual abuse material. For that, they deserved to lose in my opinion and I - like most of the world - absolutely adore Haaland and a small part of me was excited for him and Nyland to go through.

If I had £1 for every time I heard "800 years of oppression" as a child (English, relocated to Ireland, to my grandparents house where my dad grew up), I'd be a rich woman. Don't bother bringing logic into it.

@EssCarGo Go on any social media report about England winning a game and you will see people in the comments literally hating a nation. Mostly the Scot’s, who claim ‘it’s not just us everyone hates you.’ 🤣
