Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Thanks ❤️

Lewis Hamilton has been continually racially abused in the Spanish Grand Prix. Monkey noises and so on. It's not an english issue completely.

England's black footballers have had to suffer many incidents of racial abuse, when they have played Eastern European teams in Bulgaria, Montenegro and Hungary, to name just three countries.

dottiehens · 12/07/2026 12:11

I would said is fashionable to hate the English. This trend and others are coming from idiots who have not clue about history. Think gays for Palestine. Yes, Americans but also Europeans also hate the English. I know there is a factor of how the English secretly admit they are superior. Like that was the “joke” in 00s. However, now England it could seen as much as third world and underdog as other countries. As a result of having being invaded themselves lately. If you see what I mean.

Actually very funny that the exact behaviour that we find unlikeable is something you’re proud of.

In my very humble opinion it’s not colonisation. It’s the human instinct to support the underdog and root for the unlikely winner. And in many football competitions national confidence in the English side ‘bringing it home’ etc rubs people up the wrong way.

From someone who gets a chance with many people from many different parts of the work with various historical links (mostly colonialism) with England. The colonialism link is not something that will be every shaken off, especially as the remaining ‘benefits’ and new ones generated are still held on to by the current generation.

When English people travel across their world, the refusal to make any attempt at the language surely grates people the wrong way. The arrogance with which they expect people to want to speak English no matter where they are, thz sadly poor expectation of their drunken rowdiness, etc.

The hate is not just in football. I mean how can the continent England is part of dislike the country so much when it comes to competitions? Why should English people care who likes them though? I feel like that in itself is annoying and gives pick me vibes. How many threads have we had on this since the WC started and how are there still so many posts ( including me i know i know ).

In football, England has very much been one of the underdogs for a while; it just doesn’t seem to be recognised in England.

(I wish the would cup would just be everyone in
a pot, no seeding. However I know it wouldn’t make as much money from fans, because many of the poorer nations’ fans wouldn’t generate as much income. This is my mini rant)

I was watching one of the group stage matches and the introduction to another country was that England colonised them and then the year they “ achieved independence”; the arrogance is stunning.

I’m so proud of how the team are performing and I am looking at how the media is going to report on the win from last night, considering Bellingham scored both winning goals.

Yes I think the hate from around the world is justified.

Come on England!! Let’s get to the final!!!

A lot of English people dont like the British national anthem its appalling dirge.

It’s not the point. I can’t stand it either but why does England use it and fed rest of us don’t

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

@Whattheflock

are you from Argentina?

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 12:14

I don’t know how much I care per se. I’m just having a chat because it’s a chat forum.

This! I don't know any English fan who is confident in it coming home. 60 years of hurt!

You miss the point. People dislike the idea that it would be ‘home’, that somehow it’s where the World Cup belongs.
Anyway, wasn’t that song about a tournament being in England the year it was recorded? Hence ‘football’s coming home’? People might be less irritated if it had been left it meaning that and not turned it to be about winning.

Bubblesgun · 12/07/2026 12:06

Well they didnt like it and demanded bacon. What can I say, they didnt like the fat that comes with the pata negra

So one tiny group of fussy, entitled Englishmen are representative of an entire nation? Do you think every other nation in the world behave impeccably all the time, and it’s only the English who don’t?

I saw an American asking for fries in a Parisian restaurant because he didn’t like mashed potatoes that the meal was served with. He was promptly told he couldn’t have them because this meal is served with purée, even though other meals came with fries. Was that an example of the bad behaviour of all Americans? Of course not. He just wanted what he was used to eating and made a request.

Bubblesgun · 12/07/2026 12:15

Breakfastinthesunshine · 12/07/2026 12:08

But my point is ( and I speak from experience of family and friends) it wasn’t akin to the holocaust

The food wasn’t being exported BECAUSE the English wanted the Irish to die

And my other point is, that if I truly believed the English had systematically wanted to starve my countrymen to death, then no way could o bear to live in that country

I would never compare anything to the holocaust, so apologies if i didnt make it clear. Not because i dint think it was the same, better or worst, but because i have relative in France who were part of resistance and died under nazi fire, and through my husband relatives who rise in 1916 in Cork and i know their stories.

what I wanted to say is that it was systematic and deliberate.
and the reality of it isnt taught in the history books in England. But we re taught some of it in french history books.

another example is that most of the teaching of 2nd world war in english history books is the blitz. Only if you choose history as a subject for a level to you get into it with more details. But still nothing on the famine

Absolutely not true and especially since Brexit. Of all my english friends, those who could get a european passport got one as soon as they could.

i have lived in London for a long time and moved back to europe 2 yrs after the brexit vote.

there are many fabulous thing in england but your superiority over everyone is tedious and irritating.

i love NI and since moving to Ireland, i have read extensively about the 800 yrs of ruling Iteland and the Troubles.

french will always love and support Ireland, Wales and Scotland. It is to do that Westminster couldnt care less but other countries that form the UK see NI particularly.

yes the behaviours of some at sporting events (football and rugby especially) is really rude, yes the fact you do not bother learning the culture of the countries you visit (very recently at a 5stars hotel in Madrid, a groupd of English were telling off the waiter for not cooking the bacon properly after asking for “real food” and not iberico ham and cheese, and for not knowing how to make a cup of tea - i was ashamed of them representing England abroad) doesnt do your country any justice. It is very hard to ignore.

irish, scottish and welsh when travelling abroad dont necessarily speak another language or try out the food, but they are respectful and polite.

so as much i love my english friends, i will never support england.

Well you've made that very clear. Everybody else is super polite, learns all the languages and customs and are a delight to be around.. You should visit Bradford. You'd have a fit at the many immigrants here who've never bothered to learn the language. Still, they're not English so will be excused?

The meaning of 'Three Lions' is not that at all, for a start it was written by the Lightening Seeds who ate hardly "jingoistic", they are reflecting on the passion and frustration of being an England fan and it's a hopeful song. The 'home' bit is because football as it is known today was invented in England.

The modern game played at the moment is widely recognised as having come from Scotland, the English FA coopted much of the rugby style and tactics into what is known as football but that is very much not what is played nowadays.

sadly this tournament is doing its best to disrupt play.

Goldenbear · 12/07/2026 12:16

But it always feels like they get through by the skin of their teeth as a result of fouls and a bit of luck, rather than actual decent gameplay.

Are you actually a football fan or do just enjoy taking the contrarian stance as it is laughable to describe world class players like that!

Secretseverywhere · 12/07/2026 12:18

I think the British Empire was uniquely successful in that it conquered more of the world than any empire before. It’s never been surpassed, Had Germany won ww2 they probably would have which is a worrying thought for Europeans but for (for example) South Africans the most awful person in history may be Cecil Rhodes. It’s also fairly recent comparatively.

I do think England gets a rough deal as Scots (and Irish) are often warmly welcomed abroad in solidarity as victims of the English when both countries participated to a degree. However really when you consider who participated in British imperialism it’s really looking at those ruling classes who had been intermarrying with the descendants of Norman invaders since the 12th century so were intertwined

It doesn’t seem fair to blame ordinary Scots (or Irish) who suffered as well but neither to me does it seem fair to blame ordinary English folk.

I think that by encouraging horizontal hatred of peoples it distracts from those who should be held responsible.

It’s very well documented that it was deliberate, (I have a degree in Irish history). Also the troubles was not the famine, that’s two different parts of Irish history by about 100 years.

I think we get the picture. You have a degree in Irish History. You have told people several times.
Not really that relevant to the workplace, but very good.
