Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

1000 replies

englandd · 12/07/2026 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Yes, Ireland, that famously teetotal non-burny-people nation. Jesus 😂

This is actually hilarious! I’m in Dublin and I’ve seen more sunburned, shirtless men walking along the canal in the last week than I did in two weeks in Spain in a resort with tons of English and Irish holiday makers!! They weren’t drunk but this was in daylight hours!

Pancakeorcrepe · 12/07/2026 11:41

RaininSummer · 12/07/2026 09:36

Agree with this. I am English and don't want them to win for these reasons.

Exactly this

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/07/2026 11:41

We import a lot of foreign murderers and rapists by boats.

Differentforgirls · 12/07/2026 11:42

Dollymylove · 12/07/2026 09:43

Can we rebuild Hadrians Wall? 🤣

"Hadrian's Wall is entirely within England. Rebuilding it would place large sections of Northumberland, Cumbria, and Tyne and Wear north of the wall. This would shift iconic cities and landmarks like Newcastle upon Tyne, Carlisle, and the North Pennines into Scotland.

Thank you!

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 11:40

Fine by me, I’ve no skin in the game 🤷‍♀️

But your answer IS the reason. We don’t hate you cos you’re brilliant. We hate you because you believe you are without winning very much at all, and constantly go on and on about it as if it was an entitlement.

Basically, nobody likes a show off. And people laugh at show offs who don’t really have the goods to back it up.

Do you actually hate

Which country are you in?

Thatsillymama · 12/07/2026 11:43

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/07/2026 11:38

I think @Thatsillymama needs to go to better holiday destinations. We never see those Brits abroad types, mainly cos we do not holiday in such places.

Ironically last year, in a small French port town, I ended up helping out a tipsy Irish woman who did not understand why thw owner of a small traditional French bar would not serve her an Aperol Spritz (answer: he did not know what one was and he did not speak English). I speak decent French so was able to speak to the bar owner, explain to her why he would not serve her what she wanted and helped her order something else, while diplomaticially ignoring her loud mutterings about the rude Frencb. .

I don't think that was representative of all Irish people, ignorant twats are ignorant twats.

That's not my personal opinion at all. It's what I've heard from other people as reasons why they don't like the English. I do and I think it's a ridiculous thing to say 😃

MrsPapillon · 12/07/2026 11:43

Whattheflock · 12/07/2026 08:59

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Rubbish. We don’t say “home” because we think we’re entitled to win it, just because England was the birthplace of football. All football anthems, English or not, point to victory. Their purpose is to stir the fans to excitement and hope that they’ll win. “It’s probably not coming home, but we’ll enjoy the hope while we can before we get knocked out in the semis on penalties” would be more accurate, but utterly shit lyrics.

ETA: If you actually look at the lyrics of “Three Lions” you’ll see it’s very self-deprecating and talks of how we invariably fuck it up.

andfinallyhereweare · 12/07/2026 11:43

All the years of oppression left I guess an impression

WeeDote · 12/07/2026 11:43

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 09:25

My point is the holocaust is even more recent than Irish independence and yet nobody is sitting around booing the German team because of it. Because that would be pathetic.

The difference is that Germany as a country are apologetic, make sure to teach about their part in the Holocaust in schools, and want to make sure nothing like that ever happens again

England swept it all under the carpet, not only refusing to accept responsibility for a lot of what went on in NI but outright covering it up, and refusing to teach Irish history so most English people who haven't a clue about what their country has done relatively recently never mind historically

There's an air of arrogance about the whole thing, and many English people still look down their noses at the Irish, and I think this is noticed by many other countries, in particular the United States where so many Irish had to flee to because of the English

askmenow · 12/07/2026 11:44

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 09:00

You know its just a bit of a laugh and nobody actually believes that, dont you? You know most people watch england play with a tiny spark of hope buried under the overwhelming certainty that we are going to balls it....again?

The Yanks don’t understand irony! It’s not in their natures to be self deprecating.
They have to BIG everything up, they are full of confidence, a can do attitude that I wish we had.

We suffer from imposter syndrome in spite of winning two world wars, sacrificing the best of British youth to keep Europe safe.

We’re just a little ole island so have to cheers ourselves on.
Many hate us for our sense of independence.

We tend not to dance to the tune of others which is just one of the reasons for Brexit.

We don’t like to be governed by unelected bureaucratic nonentities miles from our shores.

Hollyhobbi · 12/07/2026 11:44

Bookloveruk · 12/07/2026 11:31

In my opinion it’s not the British empire though that will play a part in some parts of the world. It’s the lack of willing to speak other languages by all British nations, lots of places being expected to be like Britain with English breakfasts and Sunday dinner etc. Spain being an example. with football it’s the history of football violence esp at club level which has left a bad legacy. The England fans have behaved really well at this World Cup but there is still media worldwide who expects trouble

Maybe the England fans are behaving better because it’s harder to get into the US with criminal convictions? Plus it obviously very expensive to get to this year?

SixtyorSomething · 12/07/2026 11:46

I agree OP I don't understand that diatribe at all. Football was created in 1863 by England and it's our national game so to use the phrase "it's coming home" doesn't seem racist, xenophobic or inciting hate in my opinion. It's just us being proud to stand up and speak of hope for our national team and our pride on the global sporting stage. Not sure what's wrong with that.

Bubblesgun · 12/07/2026 11:46

Breakfastinthesunshine · 12/07/2026 11:05

@Taytocrisps
I am part Irish so know about the troubles

In relation to the famine, I don’t think you can compare it to the Holocaust as one PP has done. It wasn’t a deliberate , intentional and systematic means of exterminating the Irish population, even though the outcome resulted in millions of deaths.

However if I held such resentment for a country, I could never bring myself to live there, however financially advantageous it might be for me.

Untrue. The british army were protecting the goods leaving ireland to feed England. There would have been enough for Irish people but they had to see their food leave on boats.

there were soup kitchens but only if you cinverted to church of england.

the attitude during that time and from 1916 to 1922 was bad, then came the troubles and again the military did the worst things in NI because it was condonned by your government

Shakeoffyourchains · 12/07/2026 11:47

SunConure · 12/07/2026 11:22

It’s mostly envy. That we as a tiny nation are able to compete on the world stage in the way that we do which is totally disproportionate to our size. We’ve produced some of the worlds best sportspeople, musicians, writers, scientists and not only that, we keep on doing so. Despite all the odds, despite Brexit and the political shambles we find ourselves in. People love the underdog and Britain is almost never the underdog. Taking the dog theme a bit further Dale Carnegie said “no one kicks a dead dog” meaning the fact you’re getting criticism means you’re alive and doing things. We are individualists who don’t toe the line which infuriates people who prioritise conformity. We are also a bit cocky and steal
sun loungers which doesn’t help.

😂 it's the arrogance and behaviour of your fans. That's it.

This World Cup has shown it perfectly. Scotland, Norway, Mexico, Morocco, etc, etc go across and party with everyone, involve everyone, get along with everyone.

England fans go across and sing 'get your tits out for the lads' and 'your shit and your fans are shit', while mocking every other nation.

Maybe not ever England fan does that but thats what's filling up SM feeds and news channels.

Thatsillymama · 12/07/2026 11:26

I'm Irish and don't hate the English but I know a lot of people who do. Top reason seems to be behaviour on holidays. Mainly men getting burnt, blind drunk and not wearing a shirt in restaurants 😆. A complete generalisation of course but I've heard so many people say the same thing.

I’m not from the UK either and I agree with this. No hate though.

Just got home from Stansted airport and why is it that there are alwaya so many parents from the UK that behave like abusive assholes to their children. Screaming in their faces even though they are crying, swearing and making threats. It’s absolutely awful.
If it had happened where I live people would call the police.

I think you look for it.

These posts are getting tedious. Yes I know i don't have to click on, but I have never seen so much ridiculous deliberation over how liked a nation of people are OR NOT.

It is football, it is not that deep. It brings this kind of thing to the surface.

I am prepared to be corrected but I don't see endless posts from English tourists reporting how hostile their holiday destination was to them. The English travel far and wide and are accommodated and welcomed globally.

This 'why does everyone hate us so much' is just a weird form of attention seeking. It simply isn't true, spending time on Reddit doesn't make it so.

Oh it isn’t just football, and you know it isn’t. Anyway, I started the post because I genuinely don’t get how some people have the mentality to really hate a nation. As I said in my op, I would’ve been happy to support Norway going through, but then I saw a comment on Reddit from a Norwegian saying fuck England you all deserve to lose etc etc, and that isn’t me “attention seeking” as you so nicely put it lol it was what prompted me to come on here and ask the question.

Breakfastinthesunshine · 12/07/2026 11:48

In terms of speaking foreign languages… most other nationalities use English as the common language. I don’t see many Germans or French or Danes or Irish for that matter, conversing animatedly in Greek, Arabic or Turkish whilst on holiday.

I do try to learn phrases but obviously don’t have time to become fluent for a ten day holiday and I don’t think those countries expect it

I haven’t seen any of this, I’ve seen videos of English fans and Mexican fans celebrating richer after the game, not to say there isn’t fans that do behave the way you say you’ve seen,

I also think a lot of "bad behaviour" from "the English abroad" actually applies to Scots, Welsh and Irish people too, its just that there are much fewer of them so they're much less conspicuous and also for non native speakers the default is to hear English and assume English, without being able to hear the subtlety of an accent.

If i saw a group of German speaking lads behaving like twats I'd just assume they're German. It wouldnt actually occur to me in the moment that they could be Austrian or Swiss. So you know, when we get the stereotype of "the Germans stealing sunloungers", for all we know the Austrians and Swiss might be just as bad for it 😉

Even in my own language, I'm actually not capable of hearing a difference between a "plain" American accent (I mean other than the very flavoured ones we know of like a Southern or NY accent) and a Canadian accent. Im sure I would if I spent time there, but as things stand, if I heard a group of North American-sounding tourists acting like dicks I'd just assume they're American. Same with Oz vs NZ.

I think your OP, and this one might be one of the reasons people find you irksome. Hate is a strong word. It also takes a lot of energy to hate. You overestimate yourselves if you honestly believe you are hated en masse 😂

You do realise that England invented the FA in 1863, so modern football's home is literally England. Hence, the Lightening Seeds' 1996 song. Which like others have said, it is just a bit of fun and banter. But I guess a lot of Americans don't tend to understand banter and English humour.
