Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

englandd · 12/07/2026 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

It’s mostly envy. That we as a tiny nation are able to compete on the world stage in the way that we do which is totally disproportionate to our size. We’ve produced some of the worlds best sportspeople, musicians, writers, scientists and not only that, we keep on doing so. Despite all the odds, despite Brexit and the political shambles we find ourselves in. People love the underdog and Britain is almost never the underdog. Taking the dog theme a bit further Dale Carnegie said “no one kicks a dead dog” meaning the fact you’re getting criticism means you’re alive and doing things. We are individualists who don’t toe the line which infuriates people who prioritise conformity. We are also a bit cocky and steal
sun loungers which doesn’t help.

Most of the people on Reddit are American and there seems to be an assumption that the English see the USA as a former colony. This is odd to the English because we don’t. But that’s where the resentment comes from, I think.

Exactly. Most people do not think this at all 😆

Absolutely not true and especially since Brexit. Of all my english friends, those who could get a european passport got one as soon as they could.

i have lived in London for a long time and moved back to europe 2 yrs after the brexit vote.

there are many fabulous thing in england but your superiority over everyone is tedious and irritating.

i love NI and since moving to Ireland, i have read extensively about the 800 yrs of ruling Iteland and the Troubles.

french will always love and support Ireland, Wales and Scotland. It is to do that Westminster couldnt care less but other countries that form the UK see NI particularly.

yes the behaviours of some at sporting events (football and rugby especially) is really rude, yes the fact you do not bother learning the culture of the countries you visit (very recently at a 5stars hotel in Madrid, a groupd of English were telling off the waiter for not cooking the bacon properly after asking for “real food” and not iberico ham and cheese, and for not knowing how to make a cup of tea - i was ashamed of them representing England abroad) doesnt do your country any justice. It is very hard to ignore.

irish, scottish and welsh when travelling abroad dont necessarily speak another language or try out the food, but they are respectful and polite.

so as much i love my english friends, i will never support england.

I’m glad you’ve moved. Not all English people dislike iberico ham and demand cups of tea. We’re not all the same. No two people are. How racist of you. Dear me. Surely everyone should be moving away from racism and how divisive it is?

2dogsandabudgie · 12/07/2026 11:24

@SunConure I thought it was Germans who steal sun loungers! We're too reserved for that aren't we?

LysistrataSusanCarter · 12/07/2026 11:25

Everyone hates everyone on the Internet. Back in the real world, I have travelled and lived in many places and have never really encountered significant anti English feeling.

Hollyhobbi · 12/07/2026 11:25

Breakfastinthesunshine · 12/07/2026 11:05

@Taytocrisps
I am part Irish so know about the troubles

In relation to the famine, I don’t think you can compare it to the Holocaust as one PP has done. It wasn’t a deliberate , intentional and systematic means of exterminating the Irish population, even though the outcome resulted in millions of deaths.

However if I held such resentment for a country, I could never bring myself to live there, however financially advantageous it might be for me.

Your Irish part is not that knowledgeable then! You don’t seem to know that food was being exported to the UK from Irish ports while our ancestors were starving? How is that not deliberate?

Thatsillymama · 12/07/2026 11:26

I'm Irish and don't hate the English but I know a lot of people who do. Top reason seems to be behaviour on holidays. Mainly men getting burnt, blind drunk and not wearing a shirt in restaurants 😆. A complete generalisation of course but I've heard so many people say the same thing.

Eli19 · 12/07/2026 11:27

You haven't read the Daily Mail. There posters are bringing up the Falklands as a rally cry to war. To me football is about the beautiful game.

EssCarGo · 12/07/2026 11:30

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 11:18

Yes. We are awesome. You dont get this much hate unless youre objectively awesome. As Oscar Wilde said: "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

It’s not your awesomeness 🤣🤣

England are a quite good team. You don’t win all that much. You’re quite good.

Everyone laughs at you for just the sentiment you expressed.

Comeinsideforacupoftea · 12/07/2026 11:31

I think there might be an element of truth in what you're saying but I think you need to get your head out of the reddit bubble a bit. In the real world I've travelled to many places, not acted like a twat and on the whole have experienced nothing but welcome from the locals. Interestingly the only place we received any kind of hostility was one quite local pub in north Wales but it was nothing we couldn't handle.

Even looking more specifically at football I've honestly seen nothing but mutual respect between Norway and England for example. Kane and Haaland have both been incredibly decent, humble and complimenting of each other in interviews and there's an obvious friendship between Haaland and Bellingham

Bookloveruk · 12/07/2026 11:31

In my opinion it’s not the British empire though that will play a part in some parts of the world. It’s the lack of willing to speak other languages by all British nations, lots of places being expected to be like Britain with English breakfasts and Sunday dinner etc. Spain being an example. with football it’s the history of football violence esp at club level which has left a bad legacy. The England fans have behaved really well at this World Cup but there is still media worldwide who expects trouble

englandd · 12/07/2026 11:31

Simonjt · 12/07/2026 11:12

Its expensive to get yourself to a cup game, when you look at people getting arresting at games they don’t scream high income. Where as when games are held in Europe its much cheaper and easier to attend.

Most of the hooligans got banned, they really cracked down on it all. They wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the World Cup

Yes, Ireland, that famously teetotal non-burny-people nation. Jesus 😂

Boymum776 · 12/07/2026 11:33

I don’t understand why people see it as arrogance. ‘It’s coming home’ the song is literally singing about how hopeless the England side is, ‘Everyone seems to know the score, we’ve seen it all before.’ (England losing) how we’ve been losing for 30 (now 60 years.) but that we can still have hope. How is that arrogance? 😂 it’s literally self deprecation. Which the British are very good at.

We watched the Norway game last night, scraped through, then after spoke about how we’re definitely going out to Argentina. Then sang it’s coming home anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️

ovals · 12/07/2026 11:34

So some of you will stop hating us if the men wear sunscreen and we stop singing a song you find annoying. 😂

RoseBlueuet · 12/07/2026 11:35

englandd · 12/07/2026 09:08

I don’t know really, I guess I’m just sick of seeing the same old hatred for the English and can’t wrap my head around it

I think you look for it.

These posts are getting tedious. Yes I know i don't have to click on, but I have never seen so much ridiculous deliberation over how liked a nation of people are OR NOT.

It is football, it is not that deep. It brings this kind of thing to the surface.

I am prepared to be corrected but I don't see endless posts from English tourists reporting how hostile their holiday destination was to them. The English travel far and wide and are accommodated and welcomed globally.

This 'why does everyone hate us so much' is just a weird form of attention seeking. It simply isn't true, spending time on Reddit doesn't make it so.

People dont listen to they lyrics and neither do many it seemds rrealise the original lytics were about the tounament coming home ie Euro 96 was played in England

This. I’m actually English, but was rooting for Norway last night. I’m a dual citizen, married to an EU national, living in a third EU country. Brexit was a shock to my system, and I saw it as a huge betrayal. Each time I visit the UK, I think of the 52% who wanted my DH to leave (which he did, and we followed). The England flag just makes me think of Robinson and his ilk.

Kane’s golfing with Trump was the icing on the cake. Trump is not his president; he didn’t have to accept the invitation.

So you were rooting for Norway despite Andreas Schjelderup playing even though he has been done for sharing child sexual abuse material? How is that better than Harry Kane’s behaviour? Yeah Kane was a twat for golfing at Trump’s place but you have used that as an excuse to support a team with a player who shared child sexuality abuse abuse material. Seriously?!

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/07/2026 11:38

I think @Thatsillymama needs to go to better holiday destinations. We never see those Brits abroad types, mainly cos we do not holiday in such places.

Ironically last year, in a small French port town, I ended up helping out a tipsy Irish woman who did not understand why thw owner of a small traditional French bar would not serve her an Aperol Spritz (answer: he did not know what one was and he did not speak English). I speak decent French so was able to speak to the bar owner, explain to her why he would not serve her what she wanted and helped her order something else, while diplomaticially ignoring her loud mutterings about the rude Frencb. .

I don't think that was representative of all Irish people, ignorant twats are ignorant twats.

Fine by me, I’ve no skin in the game 🤷‍♀️

But your answer IS the reason. We don’t hate you cos you’re brilliant. We hate you because you believe you are without winning very much at all, and constantly go on and on about it as if it was an entitlement.

Basically, nobody likes a show off. And people laugh at show offs who don’t really have the goods to back it up.
