Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

englandd · 12/07/2026 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Maybe I should point out that bombs were exploding on the British mainland, primarily English cities during that time.

And that the people making and planting those bombs have not been prosecuted for the historical offences.

Its not exactly a one-way street is it

So to follow that thought through… let’s say there was a terrorist attack in London by a person from (choosing any country) Syria. The terrorist wasn’t apprehended. If the British Army then went into a Syrian community and fired on unarmed civilians and killed 14 people including 6 people under 18 years old that would be fine? Because it’s not a one way street?

Im German.
3 lions is a very popular song here, so that’s not the reason you’re disliked.

Its the arrogance of English fans, but especially the constant racism of the press that makes it hard to support England.

I really like the current team, and I‘d love for them to win, but I’m worried about the reaction of the media if you do.

I'm not sure that the English are the ones needing a fingerwagging over victimhood you know...

Very true

I have a group of online friends - we’re all from England, Ireland, Finland, Germany and Egypt. We all get on fabulously but the venom from Finland and Ireland towards the Brits at times like this, and just general Brit Bashing if we big ourselves up, makes me laugh. The hate is real.

Jealousy. Everyone wants to be British and feels inferior because they aren't. We are the epitome of something or other. Even though we are pretty shit.

Absolutely not true and especially since Brexit. Of all my english friends, those who could get a european passport got one as soon as they could.

i have lived in London for a long time and moved back to europe 2 yrs after the brexit vote.

there are many fabulous thing in england but your superiority over everyone is tedious and irritating.

i love NI and since moving to Ireland, i have read extensively about the 800 yrs of ruling Iteland and the Troubles.

french will always love and support Ireland, Wales and Scotland. It is to do that Westminster couldnt care less but other countries that form the UK see NI particularly.

yes the behaviours of some at sporting events (football and rugby especially) is really rude, yes the fact you do not bother learning the culture of the countries you visit (very recently at a 5stars hotel in Madrid, a groupd of English were telling off the waiter for not cooking the bacon properly after asking for “real food” and not iberico ham and cheese, and for not knowing how to make a cup of tea - i was ashamed of them representing England abroad) doesnt do your country any justice. It is very hard to ignore.

irish, scottish and welsh when travelling abroad dont necessarily speak another language or try out the food, but they are respectful and polite.

so as much i love my english friends, i will never support england.

I thought a lot of it was to do with their reputation for Football Hooliganism. They do seem to be well behaved at this World Cup.

Its expensive to get yourself to a cup game, when you look at people getting arresting at games they don’t scream high income. Where as when games are held in Europe its much cheaper and easier to attend.

In2mindsss · 12/07/2026 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

Are you off your trolley? You're awesome? You still haven't got over 1966.

And you wonder why people take the hump 🙄

I don't think anyone would disagree with you that knowledge of English over the whole world is widespread.

But to go to someone elses country and not have the courtesy to makesonme attempt to speak their language, is breathtakingly rude and entitled.
And it generally goes hand in hand with an inability to take on board the culture and customs of the country visited

Scots and Welsh are no more likely to speak other languages so that's another lame excuse for xenophobia

TheYorkshirePudding · 12/07/2026 11:15

‘It’s coming home’ refers to the fact that the modern game was invented in England. Hilarious really as the English are not the best at it. Just let the haters hate. I think it’s best to spread kindness and joy…if we don’t get to the final, or win X game, I’d be very happy for the others to win. It’s just a game but it also is fantastic how it brings us all together to support a great team. It’s sport and refreshing from all the other nonsense that is on the TV. No one thinks the French are racist for supporting their own country, just ignore the idiots and enjoy the last week of fabulous games!

Oh fgs everyone had some kind of colonialism going on, did you hear what the vikings did?

Everyone has footie idiots, Morrocans were running rampage after their defeat.

A lot of the hate is envy. Everyone wants to live here yet so many profess to hate the place.

Yep and France had disruption after they won. The most of the celebrating here is hooting, cheering and throwing beer.

But are you implying that the Scottish make more of an effort to learn say Greek befire they go? All English speaking nations are the same arent they? They all expect to be able to speak Engkish when abroad bc most people can. (And FWIW I speak decent Italian and French up to A level)

Speakeasier · 12/07/2026 11:16

Wowwhataworld · 12/07/2026 11:09

Would English fans support scotland or Wales? Does anyone care? Football always has people for and against no matter the team.
Im glad England are doing well but the ‘It’s coming home’ chants (yes I do know the lyrics), the press coverage, the pundits being unable to conceal their bias all just gets a bit irritating tbh. I actually think the pressure put on the team with all the barrage of shite that accompanies them probably doesn’t help when it comes to them ballsing it up.
We are having a wee party for the final and I would actually like England to get there, possibly not to win but that’s because I have Spain on the sweepstake!

I certainly support Scotland, Wales and both Northern Ireland and Ireland. Some people like the banter of hating them though.

Bit unfair on the bias of the pundits though. If you listen to for example an American or Australian commentary on an England v their nation cricket or tennis match they’re totally biased. They barely mention the English player(s) at all. I’m sure the Scottish pundits are biased too.

I’ve covered the media points above. I loathe them and they’re there just to wind us up so we should refuse to be wound up just to spite them. Most of them are really horrible people in the sports/populist journalism.

I'm Irish and I'm up for England, but kind of clandestinely. I wouldn't be cheering for them in a pub, like, but I'm happy they're through. This may be a poor reflection on me 😁.
Harry Kane is a lovely chap.

Sure isn’t Harry Kane technically Irish anyway😉.

This. I’m actually English, but was rooting for Norway last night. I’m a dual citizen, married to an EU national, living in a third EU country. Brexit was a shock to my system, and I saw it as a huge betrayal. Each time I visit the UK, I think of the 52% who wanted my DH to leave (which he did, and we followed). The England flag just makes me think of Robinson and his ilk.

Kane’s golfing with Trump was the icing on the cake. Trump is not his president; he didn’t have to accept the invitation.

Strumpetpumpet · 12/07/2026 11:20

I’m English, with an Irish father and Scottish mother. I’ve been on the receiving end of the anti-English sentiment from (a tiny minority but it has happened) Irish and Scottish people. I’m neither a hooligan nor a drunk. I totally get the media bias must be annoying but I struggle to understand what I’ve personally done to anger them 😬

I thought a lot of the dislike and contempt for the English is to do with their disgraceful behaviour when on holiday in other people's countries.
Including their arrogance in not feeling the need to bother learning other people's languages.

I think this is it. I’ve seen lots of English people acting like utter twats abroad.

But also lots of people like England and want to come over here (like my parents, who are immigrants). You can’t be liked by everyone. Who cares tbh.

That’s why I don’t read the British press. It’s appalling. But it’s not even owned by British people largely. It’s often in foreign ownership and they just love to whip up xenophobia for some reason. I have to block it from all my SM because they write such drivel.

But honestly the average British fan over here never thinks we’re going to win.

And here you are on a British chat forum.....maybe do one,?

So a British chat forum in your eyes is actually just an English one??
There are more countries in Britain than just England, what an ignorant comment to make.
Your comment just proves many posters points on here and made yourself look a bit of a dick
