Metro article about prisoners and the heatwave, but if they behaved they would not be in prison ?

Im all for caring for humanity as a whole, but in terms of prisoners they did commit crimes and get locked up.

The man the Mother is talking about is in for breaching bail conditions. He should have been transferred to a open prison five weeks ago. Instead he is locked in his cell for 20-22 hours a day. That will ensure no rehabilitation happens. It'll cost more via health/MH services.
The prison should have been closed years ago, like Lancaster Castle was. The whole prison mess, is on the Conservatives.

you obviously have not!

the conditions in some of the schools and hospitals are unacceptable and thats' despite the staff working their hardest to make it bearable

I think you’ve missed the point.

the point is, like for like you won’t find a prison in better condition than a school or hospital. Most of them are bloody Victorian

Not something I've given much thought to.

Most normal.prople wouldn't. Why should they care.

I'm really big on rehabilitation and treating people as human.

But in terms of public funding and public services, prisons can go on the list below schools, hospitals, care homes etc.

These are your fellow humans that you’re talking about!

Really , we are expected to care about Jamie Varley and his boyfriend tonight after what he did to little Preston. Yeah right. His choice .

if someone was setting up a go-fund-me for having removed a paedophile from the world, I would probably consider contributing to his fan.

What if, as in the case of other fame seeking, in-prison, murders, they have killed a young woman and refuse to say were the body is? Or accidentally shot a child? Why does he get a fan, via go fund me, but the drug addict, non violent, shop lifter doesn't?

PerkyGreyWasp · 11/07/2026 20:32

I don't think it's a fundamental human right to have air conditioning though, regardless of who and where you are.

QuaintBeaker · 11/07/2026 20:33

I work in a women's prison and a large percentage of our inmates are on remand.

This means they have not been convicted yet and may not be guilty.

It isn't their fault that the courts (crown courts in particular) are currently booking trials in 2027 and 2028.

Having also spent a fair amount of time in various schools and hospitals over the years i can confirm that prison is a lot worse.

susiedaisy1912 · 11/07/2026 20:34

I dont give a shit about the prisoners. Although I feel for the staff. I’m more concerned with the lack of ac in hospitals care homes and schools where our most vulnerable members of society are.

thats mainly because where is the empathy from the criminals when they were being a criminal (yes some criminals more than others etc, but what about dear doris when they were being conned, or paul who goes to church being ambushed, etc.

Edited

I get the impression you are deliberately poking the bear. Do you need to have a nice sit down in the shade yourself?

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 11/07/2026 20:40

Prisons are already in a dire state. Overcrowded, tiny cells, with high rates of suicide, violence and self harm due to the lack of funding and staff for things like exercise out of their cells and education. YABVCruel.

This is a childishly simplistic view of prisoners. Do you really believe convicted criminal = "evil"? And do you really think that if you have committed any crime that merits a custodial sentence then you should suffer without limit? You don't think people can be redeemed or that any of them might be more than whatever they did that landed them in prison? And what about their loved ones—their parents, partners, children, friends etc? Do they just need to suck it up and get on with the fact that someone they love is being held in inhumane, dangerous conditions? You understand that the heat the article is talking about is more than just unpleasant/uncomfortable, right? That it's actually dangerous?

Also, quite a lot of prisoners are on remand, I.e. awaiting trial and so technically innocent—even if you are happy for convicted inmates to succumb to heat stroke, do you also think remand prisoners should be made to suffer? No smoke without fire? I guess we'll just move on from all that "innocent until proven guilty" bollocks then...

Thank goodness for the sensible people

Oh, give over 🙄
The overwhelming majority of us are absolutely not.

You are seriously mistaken. It happens every single day.

Unless you are a complete savage yourself everyone is entitled to basic humanity. I am not sure why you think sinking to barbarism in return is the answer

You can tell a lot about a society by how it treats its prisoners

And how it treats it's children and sexual assaults against them see the recent early realise of "daddy " after a mere 14 years .
Supposedly to be deported the victims left at their abusers mercy allowed to carry on life !

Agree with earlier poster re schools /hospitals etc first.
Very ill people are suffering.

Most people are struggling right now and don't have that basic comfort
A recent article said children are passing out and being sick in this along with staff.
Of course in an ideal world we should all have the right equipment to help with this heat but we don't and many people in social housing and flats with low ceilings and cladding and being boilled alive . Many old people with no one to help them are drying alone.
Prisoners have people to watch over them, feed them clean for them. So yes if there is a list they are way down it.

RayneDance · 11/07/2026 20:50

If You want to give comfort and provide air conditioning etc to people who commit heinous crimes against others then good for you. I certainly don’t.
