Metro article about prisoners and the heatwave, but if they behaved they would not be in prison ?

Im all for caring for humanity as a whole, but in terms of prisoners they did commit crimes and get locked up.

Well the staff are all working in the heat as well.
its a bit ridiculous you can say they are in prison so dosent matter what the conditions are?

Supersleepysheepy · 11/07/2026 19:01

Agreed somewhat. If hospitals and schools are hot, then prisons can go to the bottom of the priority list for fans and aircon.

Flyinpig · 11/07/2026 19:02

Too generalised. There are some who shouldn't be there, some who deserve to be there forever, some good people who made a mistake and are suffering in terrible terrible ways. Pretty much anyone can end up in prison in a small twist of fate.

Stripeysofa · 11/07/2026 19:03

I agree, should they not have committed crimes they wouldn’t be in there. Do feel for the staff but then again it’s hot in my workplace with no aircon and I manage, although unpleasant.

SallyD00lally · 11/07/2026 19:03

You haven’t told us anything about the article?

Not something I've given much thought to.

Lmnop22 · 11/07/2026 19:06

Prisoners are also people who have human rights and deserve basic comfort….

Bourneyesterday · 11/07/2026 19:07

You can tell a lot about a society by how it treats its prisoners

Indeed, but hospitals and schools should come first.

"I'm all for caring for humanity as a whole"

That's clearly not the case. Try to be a better person.

ImPamDoove · 11/07/2026 19:11

Rather a puerile viewpoint.

Prison is the punishment. They still have the right to be treated humanely. The prison service has a legal and ethical duty to ensure their health and safety, and that includes care in heatwaves.

LibertyLucy1975 · 11/07/2026 19:13

Human beings. A lot of whom who have already faced massive adversity.

is the loss of liberty not enough punishment?

Anyone who has lived a life of privilege (comfortable childhood, intact mental health, good role models) should recognise that their lives and opportunities gave them a massive advantage and they were less likely to end up incarcerated.

There but for the grace of God.

Here’s an article not sure if it’s the same as op has seen. I do think there are certain easy fixes like turning showers down to tepid. Refilable water bottle to take hsve to cells after meals. I wouldn’t be keen on a prison having ac before schools / hospitals. Staff should have uniforms with cold packs etc. and regular hydration breaks to help them,

Prisoners are being 'tortured, not punished' in small cells during heatwave

They may be prisoners but they are entitled to be treated humanely.
The heatwave conditions in prisons do not sound humane.

I’d imagine the conditions are no worse than many public facilities?
Hospitals are ridiculously hot in summer, I’d save my sympathies for people unavoidably detained in them, not prisons.

OddBoots · 11/07/2026 19:44

I imagine that with the security needed at windows at all heights the airflow would be minimal, the conditions are likely to be far worse than other buildings. Prisoners already have far worse health any shorter life expectancy than the general population so this is also likely a significant health risk.

If we want prisoners (most of whom will be released at some point) to know that they are still part of society so there is some chance of rehabilitation then some compassion is needed. There isn't the budget for big changes but hopefully there are some things that can be done to help.

Too many people are in their ivory towers, with little empathy.

thats mainly because where is the empathy from the criminals when they were being a criminal (yes some criminals more than others etc, but what about dear doris when they were being conned, or paul who goes to church being ambushed, etc.

And some on remand who will subsequently be released or acquitted.

Hallywally · 11/07/2026 19:54

And the staff! 😂🥵
