Metro article about prisoners and the heatwave, but if they behaved they would not be in prison ?

Im all for caring for humanity as a whole, but in terms of prisoners they did commit crimes and get locked up.

for that type of crime only one suitable punishment, death sentence, and if any one disagrees with that, please explain your reasoning

I’m ethically opposed to the death penalty as are the majority of advanced nations. In practice too many innocents were executed. In addition ‘harm a child’ would be extended to neonaticide and infanticide which are mostly done by the baby’s mother. Do you want mentally ill (post partum depression/psychosis or pregnancy psychosis) or desperate young women to be executed instead of given a hospital order?

Of course there are no murderers, paedophiles, rapists, thieves, all the rest of the "criminals" ever in our hospitals.

Never said there weren't... Odd direction for you to take my comment in...

I think most people would want monsters like Jamie Varley executed, why should my taxes be used to keep that monster fed and protected in jail there's no justification.

Morals aside, 1.to avoid catastrophic miscarriages of justice no one can be killed 2. Execution isn’t instant.
instead of your hard earned money going on prison, it can go on prison and legal
challenges for decades.

Miscarriage of justice, are we talking about the same monster Jamie Varley ?

LBFseBrom · 16/07/2026 13:21

Charming. They aren't all axe murderers you know and they are human beings like us.

The prison staff are also in the same prison environment during working hours.

Prisons should have good air conditioning.

Why should prisoners have good air conditioning when many law-abiding working people do not? Are you really advocating taxing people who cannot afford air conditioning themselves to pay for air-conditioning for those who are in prison because they broke the law? How is that fair?

Yes - Jamie Varley gets to live so that others don’t get erroneously killed. This is how collateral damage is avoided. Could be Jamie Varley, could be Myra Hindley - doesn’t matter.

Execution makes no moral, logical
or practical sense.

The air conditioning is a red herring. Prisoners need to live in humane conditions that don’t have a negative effect on their health. The solution could be chilled water, fans, more time out of cells.. lighter clothes.. whatever avoids heat exhaustion.

As long as they have access to water (which I'm fairly sure they do) then heat exhaustion can be avoided pretty easily.

If we had a more equal society, most of those people would not have done those things (if indeed they actually did; how many innocent people is it OK to give heatstroke to?). And prison definitely does not stop them doing it again (the reverse, if anything).

Even if they were the most evil people in the world (if evil exists), unless you are also evil (in which case you deserve to be in there too), their needs (including not being overheated) should be met.

Most female prisoners are either in there for not paying the fine for watching television without a licence, or because they stole, or for minor drug-related offences (usually either for food for their children, or being coerced to by their male partner). Over half have experienced childhood or domestic abuse or both, and over half probably have traumatic brain injuries. Over 80% are mentally ill.

It's also estimated that at least one third and possibly more than half of prisoners are neurodivergent (usually undiagnosed) so their offences are often likely related to a lack of support from society. Never mind the racism embedded in the system at every stage (arrest, conviction, and sentencing).

But yeah, let's cook them to death...

YABU, if that wasn't clear.

OonaStubbs · 18/07/2026 23:58

No-one is being "cooked to death" in prison. They are just a bit warm.

There are some evil people in this world, perhaps you don't read the news, how do you describe Emma Tustin or Jamie Varley or anyone else who has killed a baby or a young child?

OonaStubbs · 19/07/2026 11:35

If we had a more equal society, what would be the point of anyone trying hard to get on in life when the weak-minded and indolent get the same rewards anyway?

I would argue the exact oppostite. Genuine equality of opportunity means there is a point for everyone to trying. It is structural inequality that destroys the motivation to try. Some young people never see any point precisely because of the deprivation they are born into.

No one in the UK is currently in prison (currently) for failing to pay tv licence fine. It’s become one of things people believe is true, historically there have been but not currently.

I do think that prison doesn’t rehabilitate and is expensive £40k ish per year per prisoner. For people ( women especially) I think that money could be better spent investing in the person. Treatment programs, intensive education to break the cycle. A lot of people could have their freedom effectively curtailed throughhouse arrest , tagging and drug and alchohol testing.

Do you really believe that the most successful people in our society are the least weak minded and indolent, and the least successful are the most indolent? It's a real, genuine, meritocracy?

Your lack of understanding of the causes of success and failure is staggering.

But then maybe, you've picked it up this lazy viewpoint from the culture you were brought up in, and you've never been strong minded enough to question it. See? You expect people born into deprivation to do work you can't do yourself, and still smugly congratulate yourself that you deserve the luck you have.

What would be good is to let him suffer, for some time in prison because I'm sure someone like him might not be bothered being put down.
Let him be scared for a while, so he knows what's it's like. His hanging day will never be known to him. He just gets a suprise one day

I love this post and agree so much. The longer I am on this earth the more I agree with this. Yes there are ruthless or evil people in there, but also many many vulnerable young men some with additional learning needs, that faced nothing but adversity and rejection and got sucked into a life of crime. They are the ones who get caught and serve the time. Those that put them in that position are more likely living in mansions in Dubai or wherever laughing at them

No one gets sucked into a life of crime. It's a choice..
Prison conditions are already better than some prisons around the world. At least they have a bed. Some prisoners sleep on the floor

Plenty of neurodivergent people are not in prison.
Prison is always a choice.

Me being one of them. I stayed in an abusive relationship rather than be homeless. If I had "chosen" homelessness instead, I might well have committed crimes though. Unsurprisingly, a lot of homeless people are ND.

And how many people not in prison (whether ND or NT) have committed no crimes at all? Never stolen anything, never taken illegal drugs, never downloaded a film without paying for it, never broken the speed limit, etc). Virtually the entire population has done at least one of these. But they're not all in prison.

TooHotToBoogie · 20/07/2026 19:16

scoopsahoooy · 11/07/2026 19:59

I think prisons should be rehabilitative. The punishment is lack of freedom - not inhumane living conditions, nor should it be. If conditions are horrific due to the heat, they should be sorted.

What do we do with them then? Let them out? I'm afraid it's the career choice they make isn't it

TooHotToBoogie · 20/07/2026 19:29

alphabetQ · 11/07/2026 20:05

This is a childishly simplistic view of prisoners. Do you really believe convicted criminal = "evil"? And do you really think that if you have committed any crime that merits a custodial sentence then you should suffer without limit? You don't think people can be redeemed or that any of them might be more than whatever they did that landed them in prison? And what about their loved ones—their parents, partners, children, friends etc? Do they just need to suck it up and get on with the fact that someone they love is being held in inhumane, dangerous conditions? You understand that the heat the article is talking about is more than just unpleasant/uncomfortable, right? That it's actually dangerous?

Also, quite a lot of prisoners are on remand, I.e. awaiting trial and so technically innocent—even if you are happy for convicted inmates to succumb to heat stroke, do you also think remand prisoners should be made to suffer? No smoke without fire? I guess we'll just move on from all that "innocent until proven guilty" bollocks then...

Do you work with prisoners??

MaIeficent · 20/07/2026 23:56

Their sentence is already laid out and probably doesn't involve physical punishment. Bet you'd be miffed if you got a parking ticket and they were like "hmm, we're actually going to triple the fine. If you're not happy then perhaps you shouldn't have offended".
