To be gently honest with DD 19 about her weight

DD 19 has put on a lot of weight recently as is now objectively overweight (probably obese). She complains about this but continues with appalling eating habit, partly because she is quite unhappy generally. I have tried to support her by cooking healthy meals and suggesting counseling for her wider issues. She continues to wear very skimpy clothes that are now too small for her, and frequently asks me how she looks. Today she was wearing a cropped t shirt and very short skirt and asked me if she looked fat. I said I didn’t think the outfit was particularly flattering and suggested an alternative (it looked pretty awful to be honest). She then got upset and said many of her clothes no longer fit, and she didn’t think she’d put on that much weight. I didn’t say anything, which she took to mean I thought she had (which is true). She’s now upset with me. I don’t think I dealt with the situation brilliantly and was taken a bit by surprise but can’t bring myself to lie. I don’t mention her weight unless she specifically asks. I don’t want her to feel more miserable than she does about her weight but don’t think I should minimize it either. I try to complement her hair / makeup etc. instead. How would others deal with it?

Im.comjng to thread late but has she considered taking elvanse? Its a stimulant adhd medication but also used used to treat binge eating disorder.

It really helped one of my adhd teens control his mood and his appetite and impulsive tendencies

Hi @Hankunamatata she hasn't had great experience with stimulants (although hasn't tried Elvanse) and is taking non-stimulants. I think we might need to discuss adding in a low dose stimulant though when her medication is reviewed and this would be a good option to try.

Hi. One of my teens takes none stimulant in the evening intuniv and then elvanse in morning (usually if he is going to high school or needs a focused day as does mildly suppress appetite(

WLI would help with this.

I agree

So she’s upset about something and you don’t ask her about that, your focus is on her weight because you don’t want her to embarrass you by wearing unflattering clothes. You sound like the problem, I’m surprised she doesn’t throw your passive aggressive “healthy meals” in the bin.

Nutter. Have you even read her post?? If so then you have some seriously poor comprehension skills....

That’s interesting - thanks

ADHD will be supporting the binging through dopamine chasing and as an attempt to regulate emotions (comfort eating.) Tyvense is a stimulant but is also prescribed for BED.
I’d only ever tell her she looks beautiful, the colour is gorgeous etc. And then I’d be looking at it from a self-esteem pov. “DD, you haven’t seemed yourself lately. I love you exactly as you are but my job as your mum
is to help you have the best life. Ive been reading and think if we make some changes for the ADHD and routines that it might help.” Then I’d look at the systems and environments, routines to support her - reducing friction/making it easier to make different choices - not just weight related but for executive function in general. If money allows, I’d find a PT and get her (and you) strength training 3x a week before WLI. It’s medicine for ADHD. I’m not explaining myself well tbh, but I believe the weight is a symptom of her ADHD made worse by the good being addictive in general. I’d separate the impact of the food (weight gain) and look at supporting behavior change (eating for dopamine, comfort, addiction.)

Throw it back to her. The only way I ever lose weight is to do fasting, eat what I want between 10 and 7, then stop and watch the weight dissappear.

I wish that happened to me.
I never eat past 7pm unless we are eating out which at most would be once a week, though twice a week on rare occasions yet I can’t lose weight.

Do you have nothing else except water?

EvieBB · 20/07/2026 20:33

Bad advice. Fasting isn't good for anyone with blood sugar problems or an eating disorder...

She’s 19 op. A big girl, you can tell her the truth. Bluntly if you must. Otherwise she will be looking like a fool dressing how she is. If her mother can’t tell her, who will?

The mirror, you muppet.
