This is from the transcript of the podcast. He actually said it - “ffectively, they are trying to make that very difficult through the licensing laws for guns. As you probably know, they banned handguns.

I wonder why he’s talking to Americans about how the UK should allow guns. What is he up to?

To use the word ‘irrelevant’ is utterly despicable.

There are people on this forum with direct connections to the children who were murdered that day 30 years ago and their families.

As for Rupert Lowe, he’s beneath contempt.

That's sick, even for the god awful standards of politics today. He should apologise to the families, though I don't hold out any hope he will.

America has more many, many more guns than people. Aside from everything else, banning them wouldn't remove them. The comparison with eradicating cancer doesn't work.

It's pretty stupid of him to make such a claim as it will obviously be picked up because many of us will always remember that day. Who holds MPs to account when they do stuff like this outside parliament? Is there something official?

I don't like him or his views but, having said that, if we demand MPs resign every time they make an incorrect statement, there'll be a lot of vacancies in Westminster.

I don't know if you've ever met anyone who works at the socialist worker but I can assure you - working class they are not.

You can ‘think’ all you want, and presume to tell me what I do and don’t believe.

You are also assuming those of us who find this repugnant are doing so on the basis of political beliefs.

His comments and how they have been received are not ‘irrelevant’ in any way, shape or form. In fact, in regards to his platform, I would say they are hugely relevant.

If he really stood for the rights of women and children to live in safety as he so frequently professes he does, he wouldn’t have diminished the horrific murders (plural) of young children at Dunblane.

And for the record, I would find those comments loathsome, no matter the political background of the person who said it.

He wants funding from the US gun lobby etc.

Using the appalling crimes against women and girls as mitigation for downplaying the murder of other children is disgusting.

It was not just incorrect it was willfully distorting the facts for his own gain in the US. To make the UK’s handgun laws seem extreme.

He is from a certain class, many of whom love to shoot and who are very opposed to gun bans, fox hunting bans etc. The difference is, now, he feels confident enough to voice that opinion.
Banning guns after Dunblane is one of the best things that the uk has ever done and my USA friends often refer to it after school shootings over there.

Except he was asked if he meant one murder which would allow for a correction if he really meant one series of murders.

I have a few things I dislike about is speech. One is that he undermined the horrificness or Dunblane, another being that he equated his Dad's loss of his pistols to the orders of magnitude greater loss of the families in Dunblane, and also because he thinks gun laws should be rolled back when in my opinion we should all be grateful to those involved in the Snowdrop Campaign and that they achieved the ban.
