Update: I told my family about my relationship with my sister's ex

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5550068-aibu-to-pursue-a-future-with-my-sisters-ex-husband

I honestly didn't expect my last thread to get as much attention as it did. I deleted the account but then thought to update. I read most of the responses, even the ones telling me I was an awful sister and those saying they'd never speak to me again if I were their sibling. Equally, I read the replies from people who thought life isn't always black and white and that happiness is complicated.
A lot of people said I needed to stop worrying about hypothetical reactions and actually tell my family. Quite a few also said that if I genuinely saw a future with him then keeping him hidden indefinitely wasn't fair on anyone, including him.
Well, I've done it.

I spoke to my sister, I went to her house and we had a proper conversation. I was absolutely terrified. I barely slept the night before because I had convinced myself this would be the end of our relationship as sisters.

I told her everything. I didn't try to minimise it or soften it. I was honest about the timeline because I knew it would be far worse if she later found out we'd actually been together for over a year after I'd implied it was something much more recent.

She was upset. Really upset and there were some long silences where neither of us knew what to say.The first thing she asked was whether there had been any overlap. I told her absolutely not. Their marriage had been over for 7 years before anything happened between us.She then asked whether I'd secretly had feelings for him while they were married or whether anything had ever happened before. Again, the answer was no. I did not even see him after the divorce when we met again last year by chance at the same event I genuinely thought we'd have a catch-up and that would be that.

She asked why we'd kept it secret for so long. The honest answer is that after we slept together we both assumed it had been a mistake that would go nowhere. After he messages me to see if I'd gotten home safe, we talked and we both agreed we had fun the night before. Then feelings developed, and every month that passed made it feel like a bigger and bigger conversation to have. She said she wished I'd told her sooner.I couldn't really argue with that because she's right. Then she asked me if I was actually happy with him I told her yes.

She was quiet for a while before saying they probably should never have got married because they simply weren't compatible. Looking back, she thinks they stayed together longer than they should have trying to make something work that never really did.She said she wants me to be happy. She isn't happy about the situation, and she's understandably hurt, but she wants me to be happy. She also said she just needs time to get used to it.
After that I spoke to my parents because I wanted them to hear it from me.
A lot of people on my last thread were convinced they'd disown me.
That honestly never crossed my mind. They're my parents. Why would they disown me? They might be disappointed by choices I've made but disappointment isn't the same as cutting your child out of your life forever. I found it quite odd how many people assumed that would be the automatic outcome. Both were shocked. But they also both said they want me to be happy. They know this isn't an ideal situation and they know people will have opinions, but they also know we're two adults who have found ourselves in a relationship.
I'm still invited to Christmas. Before anyone asks, no, I won't be taking him. I think that would be completely inappropriate this year and far too much to expect of everyone else. Maybe in a couple of years things will look different, maybe they won't, but I'm certainly not trying to force everyone into one happy blended family overnight.

One thing I do want to address is the comments about children because there seemed to be a lot of assumptions.

I'm 36. We've only been together just over a year and we're nowhere near the stage of trying for children. If our relationship progresses to marriage and we eventually decide we want to build a family together, I'll probably be around 40. I've already accepted that I may never have biological children and, genuinely, I'm okay with that. Knowing myself, I don't think I'd want to start trying at that point.

People also seemed to think I was being very blasé about adoption. I'm not. I've fostered children and, through that, I've had advice about the adoption process. I know it's lengthy, thorough and far from guaranteed. I only mentioned it because it's something I've always been open to if I wasn't able to have biological children. I'm not assuming it would simply happen.I appreciate people can only comment on what I write, but I can't possibly include every detail of my life, every conversation and every thought process in one Mumsnet post.

Nothing has magically been fixed. My sister isn't suddenly thrilled about this, and I don't expect her to be. There will probably be awkward moments for a long time yet.

I'm also not trying to convince anyone that ours is some once-in-a-lifetime, sacred love story that excuses everything else. What I am saying is much simpler than that.I love him.I'm happy. He makes me very happy. For the first time in my life I can genuinely see a future with someone.

Life is too fucking short to walk away from someone you love simply because other people think you should. I know plenty of people will disagree with that, and that's their right. Equally, I know some people will never think what we've done is acceptable.

I'm not looking for universal approval because I know I'm never going to get it.
I just wanted to update those who told me to stop hiding and have the difficult conversations.I did.Now we'll see where life takes us.

She didn’t tell her face to face

the other thread she told her on the phone

I have met up with her and we talked. I first mentioned if over text and we have since met up twice since I first told her. Only time will tell, think she will get used to it I can't expect her to want to meet up with her for lunch but she just said she just needs to get used to it.

I have to ask, just through sheer curiosity, do you not get jealous? in general? I mean you say you would donate eggs if you cant use them yourself, if I read that right. that seems so crazy to me - wouldn't you be like wait I cant have my child but someone else out there literally has my child?

and also, in terms of jealousy/whatever, do you not get the ick from thinking about them having sex? like do you not wonder if he thinks 'oh they sound similar' or wonder if he compares? or just like when youre getting down to it think about the fact your sister has been there doing the same things youre doing? I just am genuinely wondering whether youre that tiny percentage of people who actually just doesnt feel jealousy really?

And arent; you worried that youve just been feeling its all love when its just that its been a bit of a secret? and arent you worried that he's still into your sister and is like doing that thing Rachel did in friends where she hooks up with russ after ross?

Well so far I have been fine. I have previously donated my eggs and two women have been successful in having children. They are not my children, I do not know them, to me its just an egg, I will never meet them . How can I be jealous. The women were in a position of having children so why not make their lives easier. I have never been in a position to have children.

I am not worried that he is still into my sister why would I be, maybe I should be ahaha. I do not think its only because I did not tell my sister, there's others that knew, it wasn't a secret to everyone but we will have to wait and see how things develop.

Do you find it easy to dissociate from things? I get the impression you might be quite detached on a visceral level (I don’t know if that’s the right expression).

That strikes me as an odd question! Like asking if someone dissociates from giving blood, because it belongs to you and will then belong to someone else (and for some PPs, apparently, would have the added horror that it might go into a body that has been sexually penetrated by someone you once knew!!! and OMG donating a kidney to a sibling must be right up there with incest!)

If you Google about having a relationship with your sister’s ex husband it brings up the subject of lack of empathy.

Or as Google put it a ‘deficit in affective empathy’. I know Google is not the be all and end all but I think it was a reasonable question to be curious about.

A kidney doesn’t grow into a child.

Yes, I'm not sure what people think kidney or blood donation has to do with sex! It's very odd to consider those things sexual.

You may be into something regarding the egg donation combined with dating one's ex-BIL - OP seems very flippant about both things, whereas I would find both things personally distasteful/confronting. But perhaps it's not so much empathy related, as due to a difference in the degree of attachment that people feel? Interesting, anyway.

Yes I don’t know where that pp’s mind was going 😂

Which is why I wondered if OP has attachment issues (or rather, detachment issues). If nothing else, the thought of bringing my new bf home to the family and him being my sister’s ex husband would cause me to feel quite a bit of awkwardness and stress. OP seems to feel neither.

Beachtastic · 06/07/2026 14:49

@BunnyLake I could understand "lack of empathy" if the sister was recently divorced (not 7 years ago), if the marriage had lasted more than 2 years, if the relationship had broken down because of abuse or cheating, if either the sister or the ex had any unfinished business with each other, etc... or if, as some PPS have suggested, it's all some elaborate long-drawn-out plot for bitter revenge of some kind, Count of Monte Cristo style. None of these seem to apply. What is there to emphathise with? If I were her sister, I couldn't care less and would just want OP to be happy!

That bit in brackets in my post was a "bodily fluids/organs" piss-take of some of the more lurid responses, which focus obsessively on "where his dick has been" many years ago, declaring this "incest" when it's clearly no such thing.

And yes, v interesting how we differ, isn't it! I don't find OP flippant at all, except when responding to goady and crude comments. And I'm scratching my head to understand what some people are so irate about; it seems utterly illogical. I don't think this makes me pathological in some way, I just think life is complicated and you don't always get to choose the circumstances in which you find love.

Obsessively? It's strange; I made one comment saying that I would personally find the idea of having sex with a man who has also had sex with a close family member multiple times, 'icky' - in part because I don't want a man in me who has also been in my sister/mother/cousin; ew! - and since then, several people haven't been able to stop harking back to it, over and over.

If anything, I'd say the obsession with other posters' personal distaste seems to be on the part of the people who are happy to have sex with the ex-husbands of their close family members, given how much they keep going on about it. It feels like an attempt to normalise something that literally everyone I know would have a kneejerk 'ew, that's a bit gross' reaction to.

As in-laws marry into the family, the incest taboo does often extend to cover them to some extent; they become family, and we don't have sex with family. It makes sense that such a mindset would linger even after divorce; and also that having sex with an ex brother-in-law is just too close to home in several different ways, and creates complications.

I'm not sure anyone is irate? I think some people are just empathising more with the sister as they can't relate to wanting to have sex with their ex-BIL, and feel as though it breaches boundaries, and seems like a weirdly entangled overstepping of lines that shouldn't be crossed. It does seem a little like a dramatic magazine story to me, and not overly realistic.

Whenever it happened I’d still feel awkward and self conscious about it. You might not of course, but it would cause me stress. I mean everyone hopes their family will like the partner they bring home don’t they, and can feel a bit anxious about it. This would be that on steroids for me. OP seems more nonchalant about it though than I could be.

When you wrote ”is this Melton Mowbray I lived there for a year, they are all related, the results to be seen in doctors surgery waiting room, grim”, what did you mean?

Do you mean people in Melton Mowbray (which is in Leicestershire) are in incestuous relationships with their close family members, having children through these relationships?

And when you said ”the results to be seen in doctors surgery waiting room” do you mean these children have disabilities? Do you mean they have specific facial characteristics? Can you explain what exactly you meant by this comment?

Sartre · 06/07/2026 15:49

I’m sure it’s a relief not to be hiding it anymore but I do still think it’s weird. It’s fine because I know it’s not my life so who cares what I think. I just can’t get over the thought of you sleeping with your sister’s sloppy seconds. Plus how weird every single family event will be and if you ever got married in particular, your sister watching her ex husband marry her sister…

Hmm, I wasn't personally accusing you of anything. I didn't notice you'd said anyting earlier about ickiness, much less that you'd started the trend 😁

I understand the incest taboo, of course, but simply can't see how it remotely applies in this case. As agreed, odd how we differ.

Are you quite sure no one is irate?! - there are quite a few PPs berating OP for her moral bankruptcy, not to mention banging on about "sloppy seconds" etc.

I think the difference in reactions is more to do with how we view other people: as complex emotional beings, or as physical property.

Oh yes, I know you weren't accusing me! I just have noticed that since I said that, it's been banged on about a lot. When really, there are a lot of other reasons that it feels weird to be in a romantic relationship with someone that an immediate family member was married to. The comparisons that would exist, even if they weren't spoken aloud, would be very discomfiting. As would the effect on the wider family dynamics.

I don't think it has anything to do with seeing people as property vs complex emotional beings - I think it has more to do with where one feels it's appropriate to draw boundaries. I can recognise that people are complex emotional beings without thinking it's appropriate to have sex with, and then date, an ex in-law! After all, my sister might have complex emotional feelings about that. I wouldn't date a friend's ex-husband either. These things are choices, and it feels to me like overstepping a line to choose to have sex with an ex-BIL, and then to choose to date them after that.

Of course, obviously the OP and her boyfriend are fine with it, but as everyone draws boundaries in different places, it's quite likely that others in the family may feel less comfortable with it, even if they try to be supportive initially. It feels like an unwise choice of partner, ultimately, with lots of potential complications. Not one that I would seek out, for sure.

Beachtastic · 06/07/2026 18:41

It's v interesting how we differ. You mention
The comparisons that would exist, even if they weren't spoken aloud, would be very discomfiting. As would the effect on the wider family dynamics.

I just don't think of it that way at all - I mean, you could torment yourself with "comparisons" with ANY previous partner. OP's sister herself has described the marriage as a mistake, it was brief, and it was years ago... so she too is a different person now (thus rendering comparisons pointless) and living a very different life.

And it's not as though they had children who now need to miraculously "blend" with the new arrangement. The only effect on family dynamics, I would hope, is that it makes for a good story at parties!

Edited to add: I don't think OP "sought out" this relationship; it developed from a chance meeting. I'm not sure how often you have met someone in life who is strongly compatible as a partner, but for some of us it's vanishingly rare.
