To ask if this dress is suitable for a summer wedding reception?

I’ve been invited to a distant relative’s wedding reception in two weeks. I love a chance to dress up, so very happy to just be going to the reception 🤣

I have had a dress picked out for weeks, but all of a sudden the weather has turned and we’re now forecast 27 degrees for the next three weeks solid. So it’s not really suitable anymore!

I have purchased this dress for summer anyway, but just wondering if it would be suitable to wear to the wedding too? If I’m to wear it to the wedding I’m thinking some chocolate brown low heels and a chocolate brown bag

Forgot the poll options

YABU - no way, too casual

YANBU - it works

It is pretty casual, so I think it depends on the venue and dress code.

It’s at a hotel, I think the entire thing is quite casual, but it’s obviously still a wedding

If it’s just for the party bit, and a distant relative - sure, why not. It’s not “special” but that’s okay I think for an evening-only invitation from a distant relative. I got blasted on a thread recently re a MOG dress which looked like something I’d wear on the school run 1 and I would wear this on an average Thursday too. But you’re not the MOG/MOB and evening only, so go for it! Maybe big gold hoops/earrings and cuff to match?

I’m thinking some gold jewellery to go along with it! I don’t have pierced ears but I want to get some other jewellery

Too casual for a wedding, even a laid back wedding.

Ohpleeeease · 04/07/2026 15:35

I like it and you could wear some big jewellery for a more dressy look but that’s a lot of back on show for a wedding.

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:36

If not this, does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m looking for something ideally under £50 that can be worn again and again through summer. Maybe I’ll get called a bitch but I don’t know the couple well enough to justify spending £100s on a dress I’ll never wear again

I think dressed up you could get away with it, i love the back

I don’t think you sound like a bitch at all.

But I do think it will be hard to find something smart enough for a wedding, but that can also be worn again and again throughout the summer without looking overdressed. The dress you’ve linked is probably fine if you’re happy leaning slightly casual on the wedding. I don’t think anyone will look at you and think “that’s not appropriate”.

ClairDeLaLune · 04/07/2026 15:39

I think it’s lovely and would be perfect in the circumstances you describe

Quoting myself - I didn’t mean to say the back was inappropriate, it’s very pretty, but depends how you feel about a bare back!

PixieCrust · 04/07/2026 15:39

It looks perfect for a hot summer day wedding reception to me. I've worn my everyday summer dresses to weddings before, just dress it up with accessories and your hair/make up etc done and you'll be fine. I personally would go for more summery coloured shoes and bag (pink or lavender or possibly a bright royal blue) but chocolate brown will be very chic.

I’ve bought a backless bra because the other dress I have is backless too! I’ll just have to nail my fake tan 🤣

I think it’s lovely…and I’d wear it to a wedding. 💖

Shesafancyflapjack · 04/07/2026 15:43

It’s lovely, perfect colour and style for a Summer wedding

TwoBagsOfCompost · 04/07/2026 15:44

I think it looks great OP ☺️

lulubalu · 04/07/2026 15:47

From the front it looks a bit too casual but the bow at the back is really nice.
If you accessorise it well I think it'll be lovely but I do think it'll live or die by the accessories lol

Runsaway · 04/07/2026 15:47

No, that looks like a beach dress. I think it’s the shirring that makes it far too casual. If the top half was different it would be ok.

7238SM · 04/07/2026 15:49

If it was a casual wedding on a beach in Thailand- perfect
A hotel wedding in the UK- I personally wouldn't even consider it

Do you specifically want a backless dress? Lemon colour? Cotton? What styles normally suit you?

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:51

I think I want something quite light - because I want to be able to wear it again and again. I really don’t want something that I’ll only wear once or twice, I want to be able to dress it down for work or summer holidays as well

OP posts:
Fleurdalys · 04/07/2026 15:51

I just wouldn’t go as I’m antisocial.
I only wear and own shorts and vest tops
sorry unhelpful

Bitzee · 04/07/2026 15:52

It’s a lovely dress but it looks like something you’d chuck over your bikini to wear to lunch at the beach club. Buy it for holidays! Find something else for the wedding! Doesn’t need to be super formal or anything but just not ‘beachy’ for a hotel.
