To ask if this dress is suitable for a summer wedding reception?

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:26

I’ve been invited to a distant relative’s wedding reception in two weeks. I love a chance to dress up, so very happy to just be going to the reception 🤣

I have had a dress picked out for weeks, but all of a sudden the weather has turned and we’re now forecast 27 degrees for the next three weeks solid. So it’s not really suitable anymore!

I have purchased this dress for summer anyway, but just wondering if it would be suitable to wear to the wedding too? If I’m to wear it to the wedding I’m thinking some chocolate brown low heels and a chocolate brown bag

Lovely dress. Yes, on the casual side but given the temperatures I hope you would be forgiven. And the back is lovely and helps bring it up to wedding suitable. Dress it up with some lovely accessories - a hat/fascinator and matching bag will help enormously.
Only note of caution is if you think the bride wants a very formal affair.

It’s a lovely dress but it looks like something you’d chuck over your bikini to wear to lunch at the beach club. Buy it for holidays! Find something else for the wedding! Doesn’t need to be super formal or anything but just not ‘beachy’ for a hotel.

Ah I thought it would be really nice for day to day on holiday or in the summer 😬

I do quite like this, not sure if it’s still too casual?!

100% agree! It is a perfect dress for day to day on a summer beach holiday! And that’s exactly why I don’t think it’s right for a UK hotel wedding… but you do you… Do you know what anyone else is wearing for comparison?

Absolutely no idea. The only other family members I know that are going are my mum, dad and brother. Mum and dad have been invited to the whole day, so they’re obviously more formal. My brother is just going for a shirt, tie and nice trousers.

Colourwise I would choose accessories in black, mid grey, chocolate brown, navy or peach.
Personally I'd be choosing black or grey as a more formal, sophisticated option, but if you want more summery then peach would be a better option.

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/07/2026 16:03

I wouldn’t wear it as I think it’s too casual. However it’s a nice dress and with the right accessories you can probably get away with it. I don’t think brown sounds special enough myself - I’d go gold, silver or a more vibrant shade. If you go with fabulous gold or silver jewellery to dress it up too, maybe turquoise accessories.

Honeyhonayboo · 04/07/2026 16:04

I’m surprised so many posters are saying it’s too casual, particularly when often the recommendations in the comments are gross jersey dresses.

I think this looks lovely and perfectly appropriate for a wedding.

I think I want something quite light - because I want to be able to wear it again and again. I really don’t want something that I’ll only wear once or twice, I want to be able to dress it down for work or summer holidays as well

It’s perfect for a summer wedding and something you can wear again. I’d hate to buy something for only one occasion.
Might order the dress - I love the colour and I’ve a good tan.

I definitely need to fake tan, but I’ll start the gradual tan build up about a week before!

Colourful asos one is ok, but very similar to the £17 matalan one!

Spotty one - really not keen sorry!

I think if you really dress the lemon one up with great shoes, bag, jewellery it could work

Is it a hat/fascinator type wedding?

I like this one

The one in your op I think is a little bit casual (sorry)

daughterfromhell · 04/07/2026 16:07

I think go for it. I love the back and think that dresses it up. Definitely gold jewellery. You could also go for a gold bag or shoes (not both) to dress it up more.

I have no idea. I was sent a ChatGPT generated invite a year ago on Facebook and forgot about saying yes until i looked at my July calendar and it was there!

Its black and 100% polyester! 😱
I'd be a messy ball of sweat just trying that on.

If you added some castanets, it makes a perfect flamenco dancer dress!

I have a gold bag, what colour shoes would you recommend?

It's lovely. Don't worry about casual. At my wedding 4 years ago one of the guests turned up in tatty chinos and a jacket that looked like he'd been dragged through a hedge backwards. They'd flown from Europe and were going camping afterwards. We were just grateful they'd come.

NancyJoan · 04/07/2026 16:10

It’s lovely, it will look great. A lot of people go a bit dog’s dinner at weddings, and then look hot and uncomfortable all day. This will be ideal for the heat, and the colour is very pretty.

BerryTwister · 04/07/2026 16:14

When you say you’re invited to the “reception” what do you mean?

If you’re going to be there for the meal and speeches then you need something more formal. But if you’re just there for the disco in the evening then it’s fine. I’ve seen evening guests turning up in jeans to weddings.

Yes, that would change my opinion too! It is fine if you are an evening guest rather than being at the meal

I think it’s just the actual meal etc? I think I have to be there for 7:30

Looking at your OP again, it’s a distant relative, you’re not going to be front and centre among the guests, wear what you feel comfortable in. I think it’s fine.

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 16:17

I’m also driving there, so no drinking or dancing for me 😂

Currymaker · 04/07/2026 16:18

Everyone will be too worried about how they look themselves to give a toss about what you're wearing. It's a pretty dress and will be comfortable. You could add a shawl/pashmina if you wanted to make it look more formal, but if it's just for the evening do there's really no need to .
