To ask if this dress is suitable for a summer wedding reception?

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:26

I’ve been invited to a distant relative’s wedding reception in two weeks. I love a chance to dress up, so very happy to just be going to the reception 🤣

I have had a dress picked out for weeks, but all of a sudden the weather has turned and we’re now forecast 27 degrees for the next three weeks solid. So it’s not really suitable anymore!

I have purchased this dress for summer anyway, but just wondering if it would be suitable to wear to the wedding too? If I’m to wear it to the wedding I’m thinking some chocolate brown low heels and a chocolate brown bag

Would this do?

I’m just so loathe to buy even a £70 dress that I won’t use again!

Is it likely to be more comfortable than your original choice OP? Remember you’re trying to find something to wear in a possible heatwave.

Just a thought, churches are always cold so could you wear your first choice anyway and have a cooler option to switch into if needed?

oops, just remembered you’re not at the ceremony. Ignore me

Prefer your original dress, that looks a bit frumpy, but I can't stand puffed sleeves

Honeyhonayboo · 04/07/2026 16:53

sweatingmyarseoff · 04/07/2026 16:49

This is so much more causal and beachy than the dress in the OP.
This print is not remotely smart enough for a wedding.

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 16:53

I think I’ve actually found one!!!

With heels and a nice bag, and some jewellery, I think this would work for the wedding, and it works for holiday etc too!

That's as casual as the first dress.
Try New Look for cheaper but nice, or girl in mind

1985goingbackagain · 04/07/2026 16:59

How about this-it’s much nicer in person than in the pictures. It has a very full skirt and feels v dressy with heels. I wore it to an event earlier in the year and it’s since been reduced so a bargain I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think?

I think I’m just going to stick with the yellow, I am sick of scrolling!

Are white accessories a no?

Ask chat to do an image with white accessories

personally I’d say no but 🤷‍♀️

Sophue · 04/07/2026 17:09

It’s a daytime summer dress, not really for a wedding occasion.

7238SM · 04/07/2026 17:09

I have had a dress picked out for weeks, but all of a sudden the weather has turned and we’re now forecast 27 degrees for the next three weeks solid. So it’s not really suitable anymore!

What was the original dress you'd planned to wear OP? Can you post a pic? All those ASOS dresses you posted are 100% polyester so would be very sweaty and can't be an worse than our original choice.

It’s the nobody’s child zola dress - gorgeous, but so so thick and it’s a dark colour!

you could use chocolate brown sandals and handbag but it does look a bit summery beach like to be honest

LakieLady · 04/07/2026 17:13

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:57

I do quite like this, not sure if it’s still too casual?!

Things may have changed, but wearing black to a wedding used to be considered a real no-no.

I like the multi-coloured one best.

My wedding dress was black and white
white dress black cape sort of thingy

does it really matter ?

Triskellion75 · 04/07/2026 17:23

The Next sale started today so might be worth a look?

AImportantMermaid · 04/07/2026 17:27

It’s going to be so warm. I’d bling the shit out of it and style it out. Tan leather sandals and handbag or clutch. Gold and wooden jewelry, gold cuffs.

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 17:35

Right I’ve made a decision and that’s the last of it. I’m going to look for some decent affordable jewellery, but because I don’t have pierced ears it’s a little be defunct

I think too casual for a wedding

Perhaps with a light jacket?

PrincessofWills · 04/07/2026 17:50

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:36

If not this, does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m looking for something ideally under £50 that can be worn again and again through summer. Maybe I’ll get called a bitch but I don’t know the couple well enough to justify spending £100s on a dress I’ll never wear again

Vinted is your friend - loads of occasion dresses on there for a tenner, worn once to a wedding.

StormGazing · 04/07/2026 17:54

Have a look on Next online there’s a sale and some huge bargains on dresses

I knew for sure that all the replies would be based upon you going to a fancy society wedding, your choice of dress not being good enough and encouraging you to spend £300+ on a new dress 🤣🤣🤣

It always is!

You're the one who knows the attendees OP, trust your own judgement.

For what it's worth, I think your dress is lovely.

This!!

You'll never get a consensus on here OP but after many years of reading MN wedding threads I've come to the conclusion that S&B folk go to much smarter/more formal weddings than your average person.

My own experience is that if I've ever seen a person in a less formal outfit than me at a wedding, I've expended exactly 0.01 seconds thinking about it and then just got on with enjoying the occasion/the rest of my life.

Certainly my style for weddings nowadays is much more laid-back than it used to be. Enjoy!
