To ask if this dress is suitable for a summer wedding reception?

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:26

I’ve been invited to a distant relative’s wedding reception in two weeks. I love a chance to dress up, so very happy to just be going to the reception 🤣

I have had a dress picked out for weeks, but all of a sudden the weather has turned and we’re now forecast 27 degrees for the next three weeks solid. So it’s not really suitable anymore!

I have purchased this dress for summer anyway, but just wondering if it would be suitable to wear to the wedding too? If I’m to wear it to the wedding I’m thinking some chocolate brown low heels and a chocolate brown bag

Just the reception, then it’s fine, I think it’s really pretty. You’ll look lovely.

Right I’ve made a decision and that’s the last of it. I’m going to look for some decent affordable jewellery, but because I don’t have pierced ears it’s a little be defunct

Blue accessories will be perfect with that actually

RaspberryRiddle · 05/07/2026 19:55

You're young and it's a pretty, youthful dress, perfect for a wedding on a hot summer evening. I wish I'd spent less time over the years worrying about appropriateness of clothing - if you feel comfortable in it, you'll wear it well and look great. Youth makes everything look lovely. Plus, I very much agree with your belief that you should get lots of wear out of your clothes!

Aquagirl123 · 05/07/2026 20:03

I think if you accessorise it well and your hair etc is done it's perfect for a summer wedding evening only invitation.Go and enjoy it don't overthink.

Denim4ever · 05/07/2026 20:19

The tie back is a problem because it needs a statement necklace as well as a good bag and shoes/sandals to elevate the look. The tie vack will also be difficult if the weather turns colder as if you wear a blazer etc. then the tie gives you a lumpy back.

FaceIt · 05/07/2026 20:26

I think it’s perfect.

You’ll be able to dress it up - shoes, jewellery for the wedding, and dress it down for work.

Backawayfromthesausage · 05/07/2026 20:27

For an evening reception where you don’t know the people really and going with your mum and dad, I think you can get away with it.

to be honest, I’ve several dresses like that style, I wear them with flip flops or trainers as ever day dresses, round the house or out to the shops etc, but I think with heels, make up hair, you could prob make it work.

and I think chocolate brown was spot on.

SargeMimpson · 05/07/2026 21:05

It’s too casual and it’s too close to cream. It’s a no

Oh cmon, sure it’s poor etiquette to wear white, ivory or cream to someone’s wedding. But no way can you extend that to all pale colours, like yellow, blue green etc. the colour is fine; that’s going too far.

Literally nothing about yellow is too close to cream.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 05/07/2026 23:43

Too casual. Dress it up with Jewellery and a nice bag/shies.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 06/07/2026 09:46

I'd wear it to a reception with gold sandals, jewellery and handbag. A friend wore a dress like that to my wedding, just a bit shorter and she looked lovely in it.

I have two halterneck options now, both of which will work with the cornflower accessories I hope

although I have been told on S&B that I can’t wear it because I’m a size 18!

They are talking absolute nonsense.

Is it between the Yellow or Brown dress?

AppleTheStoolasMom · 07/07/2026 09:31

Yellow and chocolate brown? It’s giving 1970’s school run. Not wedding attire, guests at low key UK field/garden party weddings dress up way more than this (my industry).

KaleidoscopeSmile · 07/07/2026 09:50

I think you should ignore the naysayers and if you like and feel good in the original dress, wear it.

I have never in my life eyeballed other guests at a wedding and decided that their outfit was "unsuitable". I may not have like the outfit but like everyone else in this thread, I'm not a harbinger of style. No-one is as style is subjective.

I don’t think it’s yellow but pale lemon and very suitable for a summer wedding. Something I would definitely wear.

WhistPie · 07/07/2026 11:58

I am SO thankful that

a) I don't get invited to the same sorts of weddings that seem to be de rigeur amongst the S&B contributors

b) I am way beyond the age that I give a stuff about anyone thinking I'm inappropriately dressed for a wedding

When I was in my 20s I spent money that I could ill afford on a wedding outfit. I only wore the dress once more - what a waste. After that, I wore what I knew I'd wear again and again, something suitable for work or casual enough to wear at the weekend.

I have, I was at a wedding once where a woman turned up in a red bandage dress type thing, it was skin tight, and wrapped round her body, but with really big spaces in the wrap around, revealing flesh, all the way up her body.

It was also a very high end posh wedding. I was about 19, she was late 20s, and distinctly remember looking at her thinking oh no, poor cow, that’s a huge mistake . She was trying to impress her boyfriends parents, and she did the opposite, they were utterly appalled. I heard the mother commenting,

it was like this dress, but the gaps were bigger where the flesh was exposed, and were all the way up her legs and round her torso as well, it was midi not mini.

honestly she’d have been better fronting up in a white wedding dress 😂

I have never in my life eyeballed other guests at a wedding and decided that their outfit was "unsuitable" Really! I've thought it but never said anything. These are dresses I saw at 3, different weddings:

-Crochet cream dress where the crochet florets only just covered the bare nipples and her thong was visible underneath
-Skin tight, white, boob tube style 'dress' also with visible nipples and thong
-The MIL wore a white, lace, full length gown with a puddle hem. The top half had a low back and front, so her regular bra was on full display.

Cherrysoup · 07/07/2026 13:13

I think it's fine. I was at a wedding last weekend, all day and plenty of people turned up quite casual-2 older guys in shorts and polos, which I thought was a bit too casual! People in similar to your yellow dress, one or two in very obviously designer very posh dresses, most in in between styles.

user1471600850 · 07/07/2026 13:47

You can wear whatever you want to a wedding - whatever you feel comfortable in and feel good in - ignore all the not posh enough for a wedding comments - that is utter nonsense unless you are going to a "posh" wedding! I think both dresses are lovely and you will look great!

WineThirty · 07/07/2026 17:04

A former love islander wore a yellow nobody's child dress to wimbledon this week (scroll down to second pic in link). Looks more like the style of your brown one rather than yellow one. Anyway, it looked perfectly suitable for the occasion (despite general views on attire of love island types) and i think equally suitable for a wedding evening party.
