To ask if this dress is suitable for a summer wedding reception?

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:26

I’ve been invited to a distant relative’s wedding reception in two weeks. I love a chance to dress up, so very happy to just be going to the reception 🤣

I have had a dress picked out for weeks, but all of a sudden the weather has turned and we’re now forecast 27 degrees for the next three weeks solid. So it’s not really suitable anymore!

I have purchased this dress for summer anyway, but just wondering if it would be suitable to wear to the wedding too? If I’m to wear it to the wedding I’m thinking some chocolate brown low heels and a chocolate brown bag

Popped it into chat OP for ideas on accessories

bellventrico · 04/07/2026 16:20

every time I see this type of post I know without looking that it'll be too casual - sorry it's not really suitable

KitsyWitsy · 04/07/2026 16:22

I also knew without looking it would be too casual. I don't know why you think you'll get something you can wear to a wedding, work and everyday. Weddings are supposed to be a bit dressed up? That is a dress I'd wear to go to Morrisons.

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 16:23

Is it a faux pas to do white accessories for a wedding? Obviously I know a white dress is a no!

I’ve never been to a wedding as an adult - the last one I went to was 15 years ago, I was 12 and a bridesmaid 😂 so I have no frame of reference

I think accessories can really make or break an outfit, in an ideal world I’d drop a lot of money on a dress but I don’t have the money to do that. If I had a lot of dressed up occasions coming up I’d do it, but I won’t be going to a wedding again for years.

I have a gold bag, what colour shoes would you recommend?

Yeah, go gold jewellery, gold bag, and statement shoes of another colour. Bright red?

But you go out sometimes? I would just wear one of my going out dresses. You can get cheaper stuff on vinted. Or get a dress on vinted and sell it afterwards.

My going out dresses aren’t wedding appropriate dresses! I’d wear this yellow dress to go out though

If you have long hair and wear it up to show the bow at the back,I think it would look more dressy. Heels if you can bear them too! And possibly a slip under the skirt part if it is at all see through.

Here’s another Chat image
this time I specifically asked for accessories for a summer wedding

Or this?

I’m starting to wish I’d never said yes to going, this is so much stress!

I knew for sure that all the replies would be based upon you going to a fancy society wedding, your choice of dress not being good enough and encouraging you to spend £300+ on a new dress 🤣🤣🤣

It always is!

You're the one who knows the attendees OP, trust your own judgement.

For what it's worth, I think your dress is lovely.

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:36

If not this, does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m looking for something ideally under £50 that can be worn again and again through summer. Maybe I’ll get called a bitch but I don’t know the couple well enough to justify spending £100s on a dress I’ll never wear again

There’s a thread on S&B today about a dress for a christening, with a link to a lovely polka dot dress from next which I think was only £39.

It might be a good option?

It’s white! I’d love it, I love a polka dot, but I don’t think I could get away with it 🤣

Is the wedding on the beach?

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 04/07/2026 16:37

I think you could dress it up- maybe with something in your hair, a gauzy wrap, statement clutch and shoes.

M and S have some great dresses under £40 that again can be dressed up with good accessories.

Honeyhonayboo · 04/07/2026 16:37

Seriously as someone in their 30s who goes to at least 8 weddings a year, and many of them Irish weddings which are much formal than English, it is more than acceptable!

Yeah I guess it is, but it’s very much not a bridal gown. But I get it.

Might not be your style, OP but this is £17 in all sizes

That's a really lovely dress. This would look great for any occasion

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 16:42

Would this do?

I’m just so loathe to buy even a £70 dress that I won’t use again!

I think it’s just the actual meal etc? I think I have to be there for 7:30

Most weddings I’ve been to have consisted of essentially 3 parts.

  1. the actual ceremony, usually in a church.
  2. the “reception” - a sit down meal with speeches
  3. the evening party - a disco and buffet food.

Your dress is fine for 3) but not for 1) and 2).

laurini · 04/07/2026 16:43

I would wear this to a wedding, yes! It's fairly casual, but i dont think there is anything wrong with that tbh

Lovely and doesn’t look quite so beachy.
