To ask if this dress is suitable for a summer wedding reception?

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 15:26

I’ve been invited to a distant relative’s wedding reception in two weeks. I love a chance to dress up, so very happy to just be going to the reception 🤣

I have had a dress picked out for weeks, but all of a sudden the weather has turned and we’re now forecast 27 degrees for the next three weeks solid. So it’s not really suitable anymore!

I have purchased this dress for summer anyway, but just wondering if it would be suitable to wear to the wedding too? If I’m to wear it to the wedding I’m thinking some chocolate brown low heels and a chocolate brown bag

Lovely dress. Yes, on the casual side but given the temperatures I hope you would be forgiven. And the back is lovely and helps bring it up to wedding suitable. Dress it up with some lovely accessories - a hat/fascinator and matching bag will help enormously.
Only note of caution is if you think the bride wants a very formal affair.

I think it’s lovely and would be perfect in the circumstances you describe

I agree. Don’t sweat it, @weddingdilemmadress - no one will remember, or care.

Dress it up with some ‘statement’ in your face jewellery, wear gorgeous but comfortable shoes/sandals, and enjoy the day. 🥂

JustGiveMeReason · 04/07/2026 18:20

I also think it is perfect for what you describe. You definitely should take the temperature / weather into account.

It isn't like you are MoB or MoG - you are absolutely fine to wear it. It is very pretty and very suitable.

LiquidSquid · 04/07/2026 20:18

I don't think there's anything 'wrong' with White shoes for a wedding, weddingdilemmadress but I'd personally go for more of a silver with this dress.

This!!

You'll never get a consensus on here OP but after many years of reading MN wedding threads I've come to the conclusion that S&B folk go to much smarter/more formal weddings than your average person.

My own experience is that if I've ever seen a person in a less formal outfit than me at a wedding, I've expended exactly 0.01 seconds thinking about it and then just got on with enjoying the occasion/the rest of my life.

Certainly my style for weddings nowadays is much more laid-back than it used to be. Enjoy!

I dont think half the people responding to wedding threads on here have been to anwedding in the last 20 years. Every thread is filled with people putting links to the most old fashioned or dreary dresses they can find.
Having been to several weddings in the last few years I would say Style and beauty is the last place I would come for advice.
OP your original choice is fine. I have seen either that dress or very similar at the last couple of weddings I have attended.

Pansykavalier · 04/07/2026 22:39

The Newlook dress is beautiful but I still prefer OP’s choice

Createausername1970 · 04/07/2026 23:24

An evening do for a distant relative - I think the dress is fine. It's a the more relaxed part of the day, most of the wedding party will be letting their hair down by this point. And no-one will care about your dress. Most of them won't know who you are or be in the slightest bit interested in what you are wearing.

Have a great time.

I didn’t realise weddings were such serious business to be honest 😂 it’s been ages since I’ve been to one!

Nor me. I think the last one I went to was pre-covid. That was evening only at an outdoor venue, I think I wore something summery as well.

I used to bow to perceived expectations of dress codes and spent many occasions in uncomfortable clothes and shoes.

As long as I am clean and won't scare the horses, I don't care anymore and I would swerve an invite that stated a dress code or colour.

Apparently I’m also wrong and I’m not going to the reception? I don’t know! I’m at the age where everyone I know either got married ages ago (and I was a bridesmaid as a child), or they’re not married yet, without plans to get married. So I have no frame of reference and I’m not keen to spend ££££ on a dress! I’ve ordered this, and I think this will work for both the wedding and then summer after

In my day if you got an invite to "the reception" it was for the evening. Cold buffet usually included.

A "wedding" invite was the ceremony, meal afterwards and evening.

But language changes so I have no idea what they are called now. I would have to go by the arrival time shown on the invite.

Boomer55 · 05/07/2026 09:39

weddingdilemmadress · 04/07/2026 16:42

Would this do?

I’m just so loathe to buy even a £70 dress that I won’t use again!

That's really nice, although the first one is suitable as well. Just accesorise.👍

weddingdilemmadress · 05/07/2026 09:40

Yes, as I said in that post I posted in style and beauty after this one because they generally do better recommendations.

Christ it’s all so confusing isn’t it? I would say the wedding is the whole thing - the ceremony, meal, speeches and the like. Then the reception is the evening but

It is a bit too sundress like rather than wedding like.

What’s a “wedding like” outfit?

I thought it was a pretty dress suitable for numerous occasions.

To be honest that’s almost what I’m after - a sundress that with some heels and a nice bag looks good for a wedding, and then I can also dress it down for day to day

I have this and it is really lovely. Haven't worn it for a wedding reception though.

Lots of colours / patterns to choose from and suits your budget (and mine).

Yeah and I can see now that you're only going to the evening do so it should be fine!

Wedding like to me is more formal/smart rather than casual. But I can now see that op is only going to the evening do so more casual will be absolutely fine.

Same here, I don't even know why I clicked on this thread but I'm astonished that so many people think a perfectly nice dress is unsuitable for a wedding. I haven't actually been to a wedding for about 25 years but have one this month. I bought a dress because I don't own anything weddingy and now I am wondering if it's grand enough?
It's fairly plain but summery.

Looks fine for a wedding to me with heels and jewellery, it will be lovely. If it's super hot people will be more casual anyway.
