To be shocked that my good friend, 37, is seeing a 66 year old lady?

Had a few beers with a good friend recently and got a bit tipsy and we got into his dating life. He told me that he’s been seeing a 66 year old grandmother. He is only 37 for reference. They met via online dating.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with this but I’m just a bit shocked to be honest. He says that they enjoy each other’s company and there is no intention of it developing into anything more.

My friend has always dated younger women and not short of female attention at all.

It’s all good right?

@darksideofthetoon I reckon your friend doesn’t exist and you’re the 66-year-old woman yourself, thinking about, or already dating a 37-year-old man, and putting the feelers out on MN to test how harshly you’ll be judged by people in your real life. Cos really, who cares that much about a friend’s relationship that they’d start a thread about it? There’s not a whole lot to say about it - yeah it’s unusual, shocking even, but if they’re both happy who cares. What else is there to discuss? If I’m right about this, I get why you wouldn’t be honest about your situation for fear of nasty comments, this is MN after all. But if you can ignore the haters you might get some good advice from other women who’ve dated younger men

I have to smile at your suspicious little theory 😂

But nope, I’m not the 66 year old lady.

I am male and used to have a much older (>30 yrs older) female friend. It was purely a friendship, nothing romantic or sexy whatsoever. She was single and had no family. We bonded over religion, culture and travel interests.

She was rather eccentric - intensely private - and seemed a bit stand offish at first, certainly it seemed that she was not widely liked and had a reputation for being blunt. But I found that, if you gave her a chance and got past this first image, you discovered a very intelligent, cultured and sensitive lady, with a great sense of humour. She didn't share much about herself, but I just accepted that and took her as she was.

I got on well with her and enjoyed her company and listening to her thoughts. We did things together that none of my other friends would have been remotely interested in - going to lectures, religious stuff, lunches etc.

Later, when I had children, she was always very kind and generous to them. She loved to meet them and see holiday photos etc. I saw much less of her during covid, of course. That really shook her and she didn't like to be around people, she was quite paranoid about health - always dressed for an arctic expedition, regardless of the weather.

I had hoped to resume our friendship after covid, but things didn't return to the way it was. She would still reply to emails and things, but would never agree to meet or do things. The last time I asked her to do something together, she simply said she wasn't available. I began to wonder if I had upset her somehow.

Next thing, somebody told me she had died. I was shocked, but realised that this Is what happened and why she wouldn't (couldn't) meet - she had been ill / dying and just hadn't said anything, which was typical of her really, private to the very last.

I managed to go to her funeral which was surprisingly packed. I learned so much about her, she had been a primary school teacher. She had a brother. There was a photo of her as a little girl.

Sorry this adds nothing to the thread, but I found I was enjoying writing about her. I miss her.

Thanks for sharing a lovely memory.

I will never meet this woman. She has no interest in meeting me or any of his friends. She is very clear it’s just fun.

Just because you will not meet her doesn’t mean it’s a bit grotesque to be discussing her sex life.
I’ve never met you, shall I go on about how you sound a wee bit jealous of her?

Guys talk about these things just like women do. SATC would have bombed if the women didn’t get into the juicy details of their antics with guys. We draw the line if it looks like it would be a more serious thing but he’s certain it won’t be. And I believe him as known him a long time.

You are free to accuse me of anything you wish but I’m not jealous of this lady. I love my mate but I’d rather her than me in bed with him 😂

Men don’t have to endure possibly life threatening situations which come with carrying a child.

Until they do, my opinion will remain the same.

Far too many men these days expect a woman to contribute 50/50 financially whilst also doing the majority of the housework and childbearing.

How would that effect relationships where the couple choose not to have children?

If they met on a dating site, wouldn't they have set their age parameters to at least include one another's age groups? Therefore it is deliberate, not a surprise to them. Unless one or both was pretending to be older or younger than they are. But we assume not. Sounds to be working for them? Are you worried he might miss a potential chance for having kids of his own? I would have a casual chat with him, as you are curious?

Too much of a gap. It’s half your age plus 7 years is the minimum.

Unfortunately my husband pointed out that even with the above it would mean I could date a bloke in his mid nineties 🤮🤮🤮

There is no such 'minimum', no such rule. That is made up by 12 year olds. A person can have chemistry with another person. It's not defined by age.

Possibly but I have never seen him with an older woman, never mind one almost 30 years older.

My friend is a serial dater and doesn’t want kids. His dad ran out on him when he was young so it’s scarred him. He is very close to his mum who lives back in Ireland.

You know sex and the city isn’t real right? Right????

Really, damn. I hoped Samantha was real. And Steve - he seemed like a nice guy.

But women and men, in real life, talk very graphically about what people get up to in bed. Not everyone of course but plenty do.

Someone 66 was in their 30s in the nineties, so it’s not that surprising really. I just don’t think we have adjusted to what older people in their 60s are really like. Are they slowing down? Or much the same and going to tick a large age range on a dating site to see what happens because why not?

I swear some people think it's a law or something.
Once someone is of age, I don't give a shit if they have a 100 year age gap.

Someone was arguing on another thread recently that it should be a law.

There's laws around the age of consent, and for those in authority over young adults, but besides that, the state has no business regulating people's relationships. The only countries that do this are not ones we should emulate.

Edited

Wanting laws about consenting adult relationships is absolutely wild.

Some men like much older women (Wayne Rooney anyone?) Some older women still have a raging libido and a lot of men their own age can't keep up. Cheers to them both, hope they're at it like rabbits on the daily.

Yep - as long as it’s consensual and no exploitation involved, then good for them.

Other people’s disapproval/approval is meaningless.

Girlonfire1972 · 30/06/2026 17:49

Good luck to them both.

He's a cub and she's a cougar.

They enjoy no strings relationship and perhaps it's a friends with benefits situation.

Its actually quite common..lots of men are going for older women as some of them find women of their same age are not to their liking for whatever reason...

Ihateboris · 30/06/2026 17:55

As long as they get on, I don't see the issue. Brigette Macron is 24 years older than President Macron 🙈

Well Madonna's 67 and all her boyfriends have been a lot younger

Blimey OP what do you reckon to this lot then?
Are you shocked?
And these are celebrities, or are they the only ones where it is acceptable.
Be happy for your friend and his lovely lady.

As I said, you do you.

I divorced my xh for such nonsense when I was as 24 and he was older than me.

No regrets.

Thank you for doing a favour for that poor man.

Exactly this. People under 40 forget those in their 60s & 70s today lived their life in their teens, 20s & 30s in much the same way as they do nowadays. . When you've lived through punk rock music, Bowie, not forgetting goth culture which began in the late 70s you don't suddenly become twinsets & pearls people when you reach your 60s & 70s 😂

Not really as celebs often do extreme things. But this is just my mate and this lady is not a celebrity.

I am happy for him, just caught me off guard as I couldn’t imagine him with someone that age. I’ve known him since uni and we would go out on the pull etc. but he never once ended up with an older woman. In fact, the last few years, he’s been dating women a few years younger than him. But now he’s gone more than a little in the opposite direction.

Very true and Blondie still rocks.

From the pics I have seen of this woman, she gives me an Emmylou Harris kinda vibe.

Blonde is amazing as is Madonna. We saw her show a few years ago & the energy throughout by all concerned was fantastic💃

I’ve just watched Madonna with Graham Norton. She looks awful. I can’t imagine how anyone would be interested in her!
