To be shocked that my good friend, 37, is seeing a 66 year old lady?

Had a few beers with a good friend recently and got a bit tipsy and we got into his dating life. He told me that he’s been seeing a 66 year old grandmother. He is only 37 for reference. They met via online dating.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with this but I’m just a bit shocked to be honest. He says that they enjoy each other’s company and there is no intention of it developing into anything more.

My friend has always dated younger women and not short of female attention at all.

It’s all good right?

Yeah, those kind of age gaps aren’t common for dating at that stage in life, so I’d see why it would be a bit surprising. If it was the other way around I think the responses would be different. I couldn’t imagine sleeping with someone that old and I’m 10 years older than your friend and I’d imagine the overwhelming majority of people feel the same…apart from on Mumsnet apparently.

You would date someone aged 18 when you are 48 and you don’t find that problematic in any way? 😳

Please do refer me to where I posted anything regarding an 18 and a 48 year old. Or indeed myself dating at either age.

I was questioning where you thought the power imbalance was.

Does the man in his 30s have power over the 66 year old? Does she have power over him?

Why do you view relationships as having to have a balance of power?

Why do you feel the need to bring up a 48 year old man and a teenager?

We're discussing 2 grown adults that are enjoying each other's time and company.

I kissed goodbye to 48 a few years ago.

Do keep getting yourself het up about nothing said or even alluded to though.

DaringQuoter · 29/06/2026 23:39

It really depends, the OP said her friend is well off and the woman he is seeing has no worry issues. Is there a discrepancy in money between your friend and her friend?

My friend is comfortable and has promised she won’t let him move in. It just feels weird to me.

But he does, I’ve known him for years and he’s had more women in bed than hot meals. Women break all the ‘rules’ for him.

Can you give him my number? 🤣 I'm a lot younger than his current squeeze!

Well I think at this stage you may just lack the experience this other woman offers 😂

I'm 70, this has given me hope that sex may not necessarily be a thing of the past for me!

Don't give up. I met my boyfriend 5 years ago, just before my 70th birthday. He was 47 at the time....had the best times over the last 5 years, age isn't a restriction as far as intimacy is concerned. In fact I'm more in tune with what I like and need more than any other time in my life. Our happiness surpasses anyone else's negative responses to our relationship.

If the case is that the "overwhelming majority" find it odd that a man is a lot younger than the woman, if they are both happy and noone is getting hurt, abused or coerced the couple's happiness is what is important, not nosey judgemental outsiders

Deepf60 · 30/06/2026 08:55

hoxtonbabe · 29/06/2026 19:24

Exactly. I don’t even see what the problem is here, good on her I say!

The fact of the matter is no one is an impressionable teenager in this situation. I am 50 and for me to find a man my age attractive is extremely rare (be it physically or mentally) so I have 0 intentions of dating one.

Would I date a 20 year old nope! But Mid 30s upwards then most definitely. As long as he doesn’t want children I’m good to go.

Glad you agree, why do relationships get put in boxes as far as age is concerned?
Hope you find a great younger man and you are as happy as I am with mine.( 5 years with our 23 year age gap and we are so happy) 😀

Genuine query- how many 20 year olds have asked you out? because thats what the OP is referring to- a 30 year age gap

20 year olds asking me out no, I cant say I’ve had that young but 23 year olds upwards then yes.. there just seems to be something about men once they leave university or get to around that age range where they have no issues asking older women out.

I’ve stated I personally would not date a 20 year old/nor want a 30 year age gap but that’s more to do with immaturity and me also feeling bad that when I do get to 80 the man being only 50 he’s got so much life ahead of him and he’s saddled with me, but if someone else wanted that for themselves then who am I to say it’s disgusting or it’s wrong. The man is 37 he is mature, has his ducks in a row, knows what he likes etc ( well I hope he does) you can’t compare that to an immature 20 year old who is probably still at college, living at home with parents playing on his PS5 daily and clueless about what he wants to do with his life.

We only have a limited time on this earth, some people don’t even make it beyond age 10, 20 or 40 so enjoy every bit of it, and people getting heated over a age gap of people aged 37 and 67 that doesn’t appear to be harming anyone is bizarre to me.

It's isn't that uncommon tbh.

Oh so you know loads of men dating women 40 years older than them. Okay

ColinOfficeTrolley · 30/06/2026 09:12

30 years that should say

Coldwetlettuce · 30/06/2026 09:12

@darksideofthetoon I reckon your friend doesn’t exist and you’re the 66-year-old woman yourself, thinking about, or already dating a 37-year-old man, and putting the feelers out on MN to test how harshly you’ll be judged by people in your real life. Cos really, who cares that much about a friend’s relationship that they’d start a thread about it? There’s not a whole lot to say about it - yeah it’s unusual, shocking even, but if they’re both happy who cares. What else is there to discuss? If I’m right about this, I get why you wouldn’t be honest about your situation for fear of nasty comments, this is MN after all. But if you can ignore the haters you might get some good advice from other women who’ve dated younger men

Too much of a gap. It’s half your age plus 7 years is the minimum.

Unfortunately my husband pointed out that even with the above it would mean I could date a bloke in his mid nineties 🤮🤮🤮

yes I look great. Yes he is hot. Yes it’s crazy good sex and we enjoy spending time with each other before and after the sex.

I have you're having bone-shakingly ravishing sex!

Funny how no-one would bat an eyelid in the celebrity world. Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas - Despite an exactly 25-year age gap and navigating hurdles like cancer and a temporary separation, they have remained one of the industry's most enduring relationships.
Jeff Goldblum & Emilie Livingston 31 year age gap
Stephen Fry & Elliott Spencer 30 year age gap
Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor 32 year age gap
Cher & Alexander "AE" Edwards 39 year age gap

I don’t personally have anything against it and wouldn’t be hoisting my judgy pants up if I know someone in rl who was dating someone that much older. I would be surprised like the OP if a good friend told me they were. I personally wouldn’t be interested in someone older than my parents and don’t know anyone in rl who is dating with that kind of age gap in that age bracket, so I don’t think the OP was wrong to be surprised. I think when men date women much younger than them many women think it’s a bit grim, although it does seem better the other way round, but that’s probably unfair. What’s good for one has to be good for the other! Normal for celebs, but I still don’t think it’s become the norm for “normal” people yet. I guess with people keeping in shape and focussing on health in their 60s and beyond, maybe it will!

When I was in my sixties a man I worked with had a serious’crush’ on me. Even my husband could see it, the guy made no secret of it. He was 30. Younger than our son. It wasn’t funny, but it was weird. Difficult as we worked together. Came to the house too. I say crush because that’s what my husband called it. Especially as this guy frequently told my husband he was punching… We moved counties not because of him obviously but because of that we completely lost touch. I’d forgotten about it until I read this thread.

This is not that unusual but to be fair it can be very unnerving when it happens. DH & I both in our 60s & addmittedly well preserved were sitting quietly chatting in a bar on holiday. It was filled with all age groups again mostly on holiday. DH went to the bar so I read my messages. A really attractive well dressed guy in his 30s suddenly confronted me & said it's my stag do & I've to pick a gilf, can I kiss you 😧I politely declined & he walked away. Nothing in this respect surprises me now.

I swear some people think it's a law or something.
Once someone is of age, I don't give a shit if they have a 100 year age gap.

I'm just outside of that then. I'm 48, DP is 30. Not going to kick him to the kerb though 😅
