I really enjoyed the thread started by @openthefrontdoorthe other week which was a different take on those boring threads where someone posted a photo.

So I thought I’d start one myself. Not sure I’ll be quite as eloquent but I’ll give it my best shot to drop some random facts

  1. Growing up, my dad was clean shaven but for a most fantastic bushy moustache which he took great pride in.

  2. Our 1 tv in the house through most of my early years was rented from Radio Rentals and had a wire on the tv remote connecting it.

  3. My most treasured Christmas present ever was a Tiny Tears doll that could cry and wet herself

No idea what Magpie was

Confused

You don’t seem to have watched much on your Radio Rentals telly.

Hmmm, yeah, watching Postman Pat, and never having heard of Magpie has made me wonder if the OP is actually younger than 61 now (the age I suggested,) like maybe about 50-52. (Born mid 1970s.) But some of the things she is saying is screaming 'born in the mid 1960s.')

I'm definitely a bit confused! Doesn't take much! 😆 I guess I'll have stick with 61 as it was my first answer...

My mum and dad controlled the tv for most of my early years! By the time I was in my teens we had a second tv in the kitchen

Who said 'ooo Betty'? (I watched this on repeats)

Who said 'oh Miss Jones' while trying to seduce her?

Problem is that all these programmes get repeated...

Frank Spencer said ‘oooo Betty’… not sure about the second reference!

I think OP is actually a few years younger than me, I'm going 46.

Lots of contradictory info here! What a strange life to go from a cable connected remote on a Radio Rentals TV, to having a second TV in the kitchen in what must have been only about ten years!?!

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/06/2026 12:42

Revising my guess. You are mid fifties. Ish.

Wishimaywishimight · 28/06/2026 12:46

The Magic Roundabout / Postman Pat thimg has thrown me! I remember watching the MR but was too old for PP so I'm revising down to 51.

As I have a clarified… we went from hand me down tv from grandparents with wired remote. To a radio rentals tv with infrared and then added a second tv in the kitchen when I was a teen

I’m 57, I recognise much of what you say other than wired remotes etc, so I think you’re older now, maybe mid 60s.

runningonberocca · 28/06/2026 12:54

52

LividSun · 28/06/2026 12:56

I'm 45 and had those piggy banks. I think you're a year or two older than me.

FancyKeyboard · 28/06/2026 13:11

I'm late 40s and recognise most of this.

Daffodilsinthespring · 28/06/2026 13:13

Younger than me as remotes came in when I was a teen so I’d say 54.

keepincool · 28/06/2026 13:14

Well, my siblings and I recognise every childhood memory you've described and we're aged between 58 - 65.

I'll go with 60

Pennyfan · 28/06/2026 13:25

Same age as me

Chuffles · 28/06/2026 13:31

Did you watch Live Aid OP?

tonsattingforbjudes · 28/06/2026 13:55

Hmm. I'm confused now.
The original run of The Magic Roundabout on BBC1 ended on January 25, 1977. The daily, five-minute animation famously aired just before the early evening news for most of its run.
Postman Pat first premiered on television on September 16, 1981, on BBC One in the UK.
I wonder if there were repeats of The Magic roundabout?!

CoffeeMakesTheWorldBetter · 28/06/2026 13:59

Tryagain26 · 28/06/2026 13:59

Did you watch , Shera, Dogtanian, Willy Dogg and Cities of Gold , and do you remember Gordon the Gopher?

If OP’s parents controlled the remote and thought (like mine) ITV was a bit infra dig, probably because it had - shock! horror! clutches pearls! - adverts, she wouldn’t have watched Magpie. (Or How.)

Edit: missed the most important information: I’m 66.

That's should say Willy Fogg not Dogg!

ginasevern · 28/06/2026 14:50

@SabreIsMyFave "But some of the things she is saying is screaming 'born in the mid 1960s.')"

That's what I thought, but other things have really confused me like Postman Pat and the Magic Roundabout which don't align time wise.
