I really enjoyed the thread started by @openthefrontdoorthe other week which was a different take on those boring threads where someone posted a photo.

So I thought I’d start one myself. Not sure I’ll be quite as eloquent but I’ll give it my best shot to drop some random facts

  1. Growing up, my dad was clean shaven but for a most fantastic bushy moustache which he took great pride in.

  2. Our 1 tv in the house through most of my early years was rented from Radio Rentals and had a wire on the tv remote connecting it.

  3. My most treasured Christmas present ever was a Tiny Tears doll that could cry and wet herself

Based on the 1 pound coins which were introduced in 1983 I would guess 52

Heylittlesongbird · 28/06/2026 15:10

in my head I was saying 52, but that's a bit too old to have liked postman pat.

  1. my parents paid for my first mobile phone which the Nokia 6110 with pull out antenna which I loved. It only worked in one room in the house and I was told to only use it in emergencies -on pain of death!
Guess my age?

I said 58 before but now changing to 51

Chuffles · 28/06/2026 15:37

Sindy or Barbie, OP?

LividSun · 28/06/2026 15:40

If her parents bought her first mobile she's not in her fifties.

Those Nokias were late 90s.

Why not? I remember people at uni starting to have mobiles (back when they were expensive and you had to pay to receive calls) back in 1997.

RaininSummer · 28/06/2026 15:47

The mobile phone is confusing me as most references make me think OP is close in age to me, 63, but I didn't get my first mobile phone until I was 26 and definitely not bought by my parents. The Miss Jones reference is Rising Damp isn't it so Leonard Rossiter. Not sure if that has been said already

I'm 45. I went to uni in 98. If her parents paid for her phone (and in the house?) then surely she can't have been 23+ at the time.

(Assuming not a wealthy family, same as mine, since the cheap telly!)

Heylittlesongbird · 28/06/2026 15:49

with the phone, which came out in 98 and the family party for the lottery which started on 94 I’m now thinking maybe 47.

Daisypod · 28/06/2026 15:52

44

ElinorDashwood68 · 28/06/2026 15:52

58

Rosiecloud · 28/06/2026 15:56

The corded TV remote is throwing me, I’m 54 and we didn’t have that - that seems like a really old thing. But Postman Pat is not a thing if you were in your 50s.

So from the mobile phone and the price of your parents house I’m going to go with 47.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/06/2026 16:19
  1. Same age as me.
PuppyMonkey · 28/06/2026 16:35

I’m revising my guess again - I’m going for 45. Born in 1981.

Bruce Forsyth presented an updated version of the Generation Game from 1990-1994, so I now think that’s the era she’s remembering. She’d have been out on the razz with her phone box friends on Saturday nights if she was born earlier than that?

And she was about 13 for the Lottery launch party. Getting the Nokia phone when she was an older teen later in the 90s. Nobody would think a kid needed a mobile phone, but the parents gave her one for her 18th birthday.

montysmaw · 28/06/2026 16:41

ErrolTheDragon · 28/06/2026 16:42

the extra info definitely puts you younger than the radio rentals tv thing suggested. House price sounds maybe early 80s? So you’d be around 45.

Last one before I confirm post 5 o’clock.

My one true love growing up (and still is) was the one and only Mark Owen

I had said 47 but maybe 45

The rental from Radio rentals reminded me of our first video player which we rented from them. You could only watch re-recorded videos on them.
We rented a James Bond movie and when we inserted said video it immediately rejected. On investigation our toddler daughter had posted a piece of cheese into it which obviously melted. When I phoned them explained and asked how much to repair she replied - no charge because of your honesty. It was beyond repair as the cheese melted into the circuit board and we were given a new one.
