I really enjoyed the thread started by @openthefrontdoorthe other week which was a different take on those boring threads where someone posted a photo.

So I thought I’d start one myself. Not sure I’ll be quite as eloquent but I’ll give it my best shot to drop some random facts

  1. Growing up, my dad was clean shaven but for a most fantastic bushy moustache which he took great pride in.

  2. Our 1 tv in the house through most of my early years was rented from Radio Rentals and had a wire on the tv remote connecting it.

  3. My most treasured Christmas present ever was a Tiny Tears doll that could cry and wet herself

Ive changed my mind - you're 51

Neverendingdeclutter · 28/06/2026 16:59

I said 52 but I'm now thinking maybe 47

Has the op still not confirmed, there is a trick to this sort of thread, drag it out too long like this and it jist becomes pointless.

Swiftie1878 · 28/06/2026 17:02

50

WhereAreMyPants · 28/06/2026 17:04

? I’ve said twice now I’ll confirm post 5 o’clock. It’s a lighthearted thread. You really don’t need to get so upset about it…

So well done to @QueenSteviewho was the first to correctly confirm I’m 45. Born 1980 (soon to be 46)

My lovely dad enjoyed grooming his big moustache and wore velor tracksuits at the weekend.

Our wired tv was a hand me down and in the late 80s my dad got quite a big promotion and we were able to get a second tv and it came with a company car (escort)

The magic roundabout was repeated through the 80s as was some mothers do have ‘em so I watched both growing up.

I got my first mobile when I was 17 and starting to go out and about.

And I watched the 90s revival of ‘The Generation Game’ with Bruce and the lovely Rosemary Ford which was our Saturday night tv!

Well done to those who also correctly guessed but I’d say the majority placed me a lot older which is interesting

I’m revising my guess again - I’m going for 45. Born in 1981.

Bruce Forsyth presented an updated version of the Generation Game from 1990-1994, so I now think that’s the era she’s remembering. She’d have been out on the razz with her phone box friends on Saturday nights if she was born earlier than that?

And she was about 13 for the Lottery launch party. Getting the Nokia phone when she was an older teen later in the 90s. Nobody would think a kid needed a mobile phone, but the parents gave her one for her 18th birthday.

Very very good deducing and (nearly) 💯 % correct!

Oooh, I was only a couple of years out. I recognised so many of your memories.

FoxyLocksie · 28/06/2026 17:16

I think you're 46.

FoxyLocksie · 28/06/2026 17:17

Oh! Missed your update! Only one year out.

Wingingit73 · 28/06/2026 17:17

52

PuppyMonkey · 28/06/2026 17:18

I put you as my age (59) at first because of Teeny Tiny Tears tbh. Didn’t realise they were still around in your time.

FoxyLocksie · 28/06/2026 17:18

For me, it was Postman Pat that placed you as being born in the early 1980s. 😊

I was going to guess around 50, which is funny as my eldest sister is also born 1980 and I've just entered my 40's, amazing the difference a few years make! I remember getting channel 5 installed and we have 3 sets of those Natwest piggies.

I’ve only just stumbled on this thread so you’ve already revealed, but from reading your first few comments, I had you as a lot older, it sounded like you grew up in the 1970s.

Yeah, that was the impression I got from the OP's first few posts. I'm shocked to hear she is 45. Would gave guessed early 60s from the first few posts.

Don't you think saying you had a wired remote control with the TV was a bit of a red herring if it was a hand me down? It's like me saying I had a valve radio then disclosing that it was an antique I bought fifty years after it was first sold!

I had 58 because of the wired TV remote 🙌

I think you’re taking what is a lighthearted game a little too seriously. I genuinely didn’t think it was an antique but when I realised lots were citing it as the reason they guessed older, I clarified it by ringing my dad. New information to me! And it wasn’t an antique, my grandparents had only had it 5 years before they gave it to my folks.

Yeah, it was a red herring for sure! 😂

  1. my parents paid for my first mobile phone which the Nokia 6110 with pull out antenna which I loved. It only worked in one room in the house and I was told to only use it in emergencies -on pain of death!

Ok so you're younger than me (or lived at home with everything paid for by parents to an older age). I'm close to 50 and had my first mobile slightly late at 23. To have had one as a teenager you'd be a millennial rather than Gen X so mid forties at most.

Why not? I remember people at uni starting to have mobiles (back when they were expensive and you had to pay to receive calls) back in 1997.

I started uni in 1995 and ONE student had a mobile. It was one of those big ones and we called him the yippee.

But that's life. Quite a few of us have old things or have listened to old music and watched old TV.

If I described my childhood home, some things would be from a much earlier era because they were handed down or inherited. Quite normal.

Also some families adopt all the new tech and others are a bit slow about it.
