WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

If not sacked by then given yesterday afternoon despite working the op spent the entire time arguing on this thread. So setting aside the white lie re the beach jaunt… I doubt she’s employee of the month for any time of year!

Gosh this has really played on your mind hasn't it. Do you seriously have nothing better to do on your day off than worry about my employment?

In this scorching weather, back sunbathing in my garden with only a pack of sushi to unwrap as a task ahead of me?

nope!

You’ll be back on shortly. Guaranteed

Eh? Is there some rule on here that people can't read and respond to their own posts? You are really strange!

I used to work near enough to an outdoor swimming pool to go there at lunchtime. To start with I was very concerned about getting back on time .... until I noticed the Managing Director swimming, and making no attempt to leave the pool 😄

YANBU to WFH to accommodate a lunch trip to the beach i think YWBU to take your laptop and work there. And daft if any sand damaged it

More the fact you on on here when you are meant to be doing what you are paid for…

you do seem to be quite a nasty person when people don’t agree with you, hope you get that sorted ☺️

I really couldn't care less if people are irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing. That's like me going online and seeing a random person on holiday or a celebrity living a luxurious life and getting upset about it.

I'm not sure what relevance my job has but I'm a software developer.

Well it’s not really like that as the random on the internet here is asking the public if we feel it’s unreasonable?! Clearly you want people to agree with you so as you’ve bit back against negative replies so not sure why you’ve bothered posting?
your line of work also matters for context, you could be online customer services for example, or working on confidential data, or just inputting random information so it makes a difference to know wether it’s appropriate to be sat on a beach ‘working’. You do you though

LightningTree · 26/06/2026 18:29

Lazing on the beach whilst getting paid to work is fraud.

Perturbance · 26/06/2026 18:51

So unappealing sitting in a beach cafe working, hot and sticky, having been for a swim and probably a bit sandy myself, surrounded by beach goers with work as the last thing on their mind.

So for that reason alone… no I wouldn’t have lie to my boss to do this

hcee19 · 26/06/2026 18:55

Did you want the job, when you went for the interview? Seems you are quite happy to steal from your employer. We are all suffering due to the weather, try working in a hospital, its boiling.....Do what you get paid for...not to go to the beach

Allonthesametrain · 26/06/2026 19:20

It comes down to how concerned you are about being found out for a couple of hours of fun, which you could do in the evening/weekend/day off.

For those of us who couldn't possibly do this in our lines of work it does sound a bit childish, like sneaking out of lesson.

You can do it the right way and not feel stressed. Or go for it if your manager is ok with it. Xx

To be fair if you were my staff you’d be asked if you’d like to start at 6/7 and finish at 1-2pm and take the afternoons off in this weather, this is office based not retail obviously! But I still don’t understand why companies stick to 9-5 in the summer months, I get the childcare juggle but you can do a stack between 5-7 school run back at 8-9 and the most of my guys are way more productive.

Id say pop to the beach but depending on your boss just ask for a few hours midday and make them up when it cools down. Way better than sneaking.

Many companies stick to 9 to 5 because that's the general traditional time to be contacted and receive a response, assuming it's for the public.

I’m not paid for my lunch hour, most people aren’t. I do however put a lot of extra work in. It’s the nature of the work I do.

I was asking the person I responded to what the issue was as I can’t understand why he was criticising me for reading the comments on my own post 😂 not sure how this makes me a nasty person but I’d suggest getting off the internet if it affects you that much x

I’m paid to do a job which I do. Is it seriously so deplorable to you that I told my employer I wanted to WFH as I had an appointment and then in my lunch hour went for a swim at the beach? I actually ended up doing more than I would have done in the office as everyone usually goes for drinks Friday lunch then sacks off the afternoon.
