WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

Where?

Honestly, I can’t be arsed.

and after your day at the beach, I wouldn’t think you’d want to dwell on silliness like this

enjoy your weekend

I’m paid to do a job which I do. Is it seriously so deplorable to you that I told my employer I wanted to WFH as I had an appointment and then in my lunch hour went for a swim at the beach? I actually ended up doing more than I would have done in the office as everyone usually goes for drinks Friday lunch then sacks off the afternoon.

But you didn’t have an appointment… you do understand that bit yes?

I’m sorry this has upset you so much. The occasion has come and gone now, I’ve had a lovely swim in the sun and a productive day at work. Hope you have a great weekend.

That was your response to any poster that didn’t agree with you yesterday

No not upset me. Just reaffirms that working from home should stop as some folk take the piss. Like you by lying cause it’s sunny.
if you didn’t think it was a problem, you would have told your boss the truth.

thank god my employees are not like you.

this poster randomly described me as a ‘nasty person’ knowing nothing about me so i think my response was warranted thanks! I’m not going to be insulted by random men and just take it.

Quite a few people concluded you were nasty

anyway I’ll be off. All a bit silly this moral debate you asked for

But a random woman is ok?

I really couldn't care less if people are irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing. That's like me going online and seeing a random person on holiday or a celebrity living a luxurious life and getting upset about it.

I'm not sure what relevance my job has but I'm a software developer.

You’re also a piss taker. The fact that you don’t care what people think makes me wonder why you posted, unless it was to get your peculiar rocks off.

Not sure how many times I need to say this but my OP was about whether people think it’s acceptable to lie to my employer that I have an appointment so I could work from home, with the intention to spend my lunch break at the beach as it’s near my home.

When I said ‘I couldn’t care less about people being irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing’, I was specifically responding to a poster who said people who are at work might get upset by the idea of me being on the beach.

My point was if people get upset by a stranger being at the beach it doesn’t really bother me as I’m not exactly getting upset when I’m at work knowing there are people out at the beach or doing other fun activities.

Imagine if everyone had such morals.
The pediatric nurses swanning off to the beach instead of going into work.
The bank being shut as they're short staffed.
Factory workers, delivery drivers etc.

It's not about what others think, it's about your moral compass.

the difference is some roles you cannot do remotely, so comparing those roles to the ops role is false so why then should you be in the office just because others in different roles need to be ?

for example a gchq analyst could be in the field, doing intell updates at a beach with a nice milkshake, or they could be at hq, either way their duties are completed, tech has altered the need for many roles yes there are some that you need to be at hq but a few can now be remote

Exactly, my role can be performed fully remotely. Everything I do in the office can be done from home. Most of my company’s management is pro WFH, just the company director who prefers us to be physically in the office, and even she is coming around to the idea.

i never understood the need to be in the office, as its more chatting, more watercooler talk, yes it helps to get advice but overall if you know your subjects eg intel analysis etc then yea so to speak

I don’t mind going in, I do like to socialise and it’s nice to have a separation between work and home. I’ve had a fully remote role before which I hated. I do think a degree of flexibility is necessary in this day and age though. I’ve been at my company 5 years and can count on one hand the days I’ve WFH (including today).

thats understandable

basoon · 26/06/2026 22:48

Not enough information. We clock in and out. So I might start a bit earlier, take a long lunch, and then work a bit later. That's fine with my management. Sneaking out to go to the beach is a different matter

peachyhead · 26/06/2026 22:55

I don’t clock in or out. My contracted hours are 9-5 M-F with a one hour lunch break. I usually come in around 8/8.30, leave 6/7. If very busy I might do an hour or two in the evening also.

The beach isn’t really the issue, my question was whether people think it is acceptable for me to lie to my employer that I had an appointment today so I could WFH. I used my lunch break to go to the beach but the issue wasn’t how I use my lunch break, it was the WFH point in general as it’s not usually allowed.

Lying, which you are defending endlessly.

Of course different roles can't be done in similar situ6,but is it OK for a nurse to lie to their employer to go to the beach and not come into work?

They wouldn't be able to work outside of their work setting like you would, but its the lying that's the issue.

It's a term people use to justify deceit. Claiming to have an appointment so that you could work from home when it's not the norm is straight up dishonesty. You faked an appointment. It was a lie.
