WIBU to work from home to go to the beach?

peachyhead · 25/06/2026 13:14

I live near the beach. Usually can't wfh but occasionally I can e.g. if I am getting work done at home or have an appointment. Would it be unreasonable to ask to wfh for the day tomorrow so I can go to the beach at lunchtime? I might stay out a little longer but will have my phone/laptop with me.

This has been thoroughly covered, or did you not see/understand that bit?

Pleasant 😂. Sorry, next time I’ll message you and ask what comments are allowed on a chat forum.

I really couldn't care less if people are irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing. That's like me going online and seeing a random person on holiday or a celebrity living a luxurious life and getting upset about it.

I'm not sure what relevance my job has but I'm a software developer.

I really couldn't care less if people are irritated by what a stranger on the internet is doing.

Fair.

But why are you so interested in stranger's opinions on whether you take yourself to the beach or not? 😳

more importantly, why can’t you read?

To be fair if you were my staff you’d be asked if you’d like to start at 6/7 and finish at 1-2pm and take the afternoons off in this weather, this is office based not retail obviously! But I still don’t understand why companies stick to 9-5 in the summer months, I get the childcare juggle but you can do a stack between 5-7 school run back at 8-9 and the most of my guys are way more productive.

Id say pop to the beach but depending on your boss just ask for a few hours midday and make them up when it cools down. Way better than sneaking.

Eugh....I'd hate a work pattern that saw me working at 6am and also 9pm.
For me, broadly keeping regular office hours allows me to maintain a good work/life balance.

And must easier for colleagues and management

I can’t even work in the garden on my laptop! The glare is awful, can’t see the screen, limited battery life (my work is quite processing intensive), and couldn’t imagine all the sand, noise, distractions. It doesn’t sound pleasant at all! Just do your work in the evening when it’s cooler and enjoy the beach properly.

Ooh watch out for @AlwaysExtraHot- I think you’ve commented on things they object to!

Duvetdayforme · 25/06/2026 18:36

This wouldn’t be a problem in my workplace (legal sector). If I am not in court or meeting clients face to face, nobody gives a shit where I am working from. We have a national office which I go to for training or meetings about four times a year.

People work from abroad, whatever works for them, so long as the work gets done and you are where you should be when required, it’s fine.

britnay · 25/06/2026 19:01

my workplace wouldn't mind :) as long as I put in the hours, I can do what I want. I sometimes ride my horse at lunchtime, if the weather is nice :)

I didn't say they're not allowed, but if you ask questions/raise points that have already been answered you can expect someone to point it out.

MostlyChickpeas · 25/06/2026 21:16

It sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

We have adopted flexi time to avoid working during the hottest part of the day. I went to the cinema yesterday lunchtime to cool down.

I'd love to do that. Daytime cinema is usually so nice and quiet. I remember I once went back when I was in 6th form, and we were the only people watching the movie, bliss!
Sadly our local cinema is very small and doesn't open until mid afternoon.

Yes. It’s much easier to have a broad idea of when my colleagues in India and the US are at their desks ie available.
I was in fact early to my desk today as I’m going for a lake swim at lunch time. It’ll be a longer than usual break. All fine as it’s unusual.

This is actually something I do quite often - the nature of my work means it is sometimes easier to work in the morning, take a break and then pick up in the afternoon. Our local cinema complex welcomes remote workers during the day because it is quiet and we drink lots of coffee. Their air-conditioning is ferocious. 😍

It sounds mad to me. Unless your beach is a little-known remote cove where you have to climb down a cliff to get there, it will be thronged and unpleasant. Go after work, when it will be cooler, the water will be nicer for a swim and some people will have gone home.

Not all beaches are the same. I live on the coast. We have 8 miles of beautiful beach, not a cliff in sight and are very, very quiet.

Loobeylooooo · 26/06/2026 11:56

And in a few months you’ll be moaning your employer is no longer offering WFH because people abused it. If you live close enough to spend your lunch break at the beach then that’s one thing, what you do at lunchtime is your business, skiving off for the afternoon is a completely different issue and is an abuse of the trust your employer places in you to actually WFH. Why not just book the time off as annual leave if you want to enjoy a day at the beach whilst the weather is good.

If not sacked by then given yesterday afternoon despite working the op spent the entire time arguing on this thread. So setting aside the white lie re the beach jaunt… I doubt she’s employee of the month for any time of year!
