As an adult I would love it . Nothing nicer than a homemade sponge. Thought and effort is so much better than shop bought .

DancingInTheMoonlights · 23/06/2026 17:10

Cute!

I have watched you post on MN for years and 95% of the time it’s something miserable and/or rude. Take a day off.

Edited

Totally agree with hugasaurus !

Sometimes less is more.

I guess all the flowers randomly stuck on it are to hide the poor icing.

Too many things stuck on the top of the cake, did it really need 5 ? or is the capybara actually stuck on the number 8.

Mumofyellows · 23/06/2026 17:14

It’s very sweet! And it looks delicious 😁

OP, it looks delicious and very festive!

But on a general point - can anyone explain the point of this fashion for tall cakes? I see a lot of vids on Youtube and photos of really tall cakes, instead of wider flat ones.

Aren't they really hard to cut and serve? I've seen some celebration cakes nearly a foot tall. How do you serve the slices? Do they fit on cake plates etc etc?

I’m dreading the cutting part tbf!

It appears to be wonderfully chocolatey, which is much more important than aesthetics. ‘Perfect’ bland sponges with (non chocolate) buttercream (yuk) or sickly fondant icing are so disappointing to eat.

Its not harsh at all. Its just truthful, There isn't anything neat about it!
Its had chocolate frosting chucked all over it and some wafer paper flowers stuck on and some cheap toppers.

Like I said, its not embarrassing but it looks like a home made cake from someone who doesn't make cakes!

If her daughter is happy who cares? I am sure it tastes fine.

Ffs 😅

Unless you’re selling it, it’s a perfectly lovely home-made cake for a child.

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 14:50

You are all too kind as it’s quite obviously homemade 🤣
Dd having Capybara themed party, so not too babyish, but she’s going through a weird phase where she’s starting to get embarrassed by things, not sure if she’ll be disappointed and just really hate the thought of me embarrassing her.
We live in a very wealthy area and all custom made cakes, which I’ve had before, but have spent a lot on the venue and also sort of fed up with the perfect ones.
But I also feel sick at the thought of presenting this and am cringing a lot 😬 and wondering why I didn’t just go with the easier option!

The cake is wonderful OP, truly really great work for a homemade cake. Any 8yo will surely love it. I like your point about being fed up of the perfect cakes, I have thought this for a few years! I miss the rough around the edges homemade cakes, made with love and perfectly imperfect like all of us are. It was made with love thats all that matters. I hope she adores it, and im sure she will

BatsInHibernation · 23/06/2026 17:20

That cake is great but I don't fancy it's chances in this heat

WearyAuldWumman · 23/06/2026 17:21

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/06/2026 14:30

No, I'd be pleased with that!

I agree. I'd be happy with that for my birthday!

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 17:21

openended · 23/06/2026 16:37

Is it possible to take the decorations off and cover the cake again? It's the finish that doesnt look great tbh and the decorations don't detract from it. I would serve it if we were at home and it was for my own family. I wouldn't serve it to kids at a birthday venue as it looks like it is melting.

Cannot be arsed doing any of that!

Wasn’t sure how to vote but it’s adorable and you HAVE to serve it! I always make my kids cakes and I’m no expert but as my eldest has got older he absolutely loves that he gets a truly personal cake made with love even if it’s nowhere near as polished as a professional or Sainsbury’s could knock out. Your 8 year old will be thrilled and love it, I’m sure.

NewGoldFox · 23/06/2026 17:22

I’d be happy if I or someone I know had made it, less so if I had paid a professional.

wheresthesnowgone · 23/06/2026 17:23

They've thrown everything at it, haven't they?

Charlize43 · 23/06/2026 17:23

I love it!

Marieb19 · 23/06/2026 17:23

It looks lovely, what on earth are you worried about?

Magsbd · 23/06/2026 17:24

It’s great! I really like it.

Me too. I assumed it was an intentional stance by that poster.

Tryanalogue · 23/06/2026 17:24

Yes if it’s my dad’s 70th.

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 17:17

Ffs 😅

Don't listen to her, it's lovely.

I bored of all the expensive instagram cakes. This was made by you with your own hands. that means more than anything and more than someone just spending a ridiculous amount of money. and the kids will def not care!

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 17:28

Duvetdayneeded · 23/06/2026 16:45

Can’t you get edible flowers to make it more interesting?

They are edible

Home made is always the best, my DD wouldn't let me buy one it just had to be home made. They always went down very well. Has she seen it, mine always watched it happen, she's a pretty good cake maker now, better than me.
