I think it is lovely..well done!😊

Anewappa · 25/06/2026 10:22

When is the party @Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday ?

Mt563 · 25/06/2026 11:31

I think it looks pretty 90s and, honestly, I'm OK with that. Homemade things are allowed to look homemade. We're not all professional bakers or cake decorators and that's fine. I think it's a real shame that social media makes people feel bad about perfectly fine amateur crafts and the like. The standard seems to be so high for everything to look visually perfect now.

Justacouplemorethen · 25/06/2026 13:43

I love the cake.
I’m personally a ‘more is more’ type of person when it comes to cakes - stick as much as you can on and around it! Luckily my kids love the cakes I make and love picking all the bits off.
My friend always buys expensive bakery cakes, which look amazing but don’t taste of much, despite being a great baker herself. She can’t understand why I wouldn’t want to buy one and why I make them every year. I was bright up with homemade cakes and always loved them and the effort my mum would put into them for me.

cinnamontroll · 25/06/2026 15:48

As a professional cake artist. Yes. It’s embarrassing if you bought it… not if you had a go yourself to make your kid happy.

MyTeaParty · 25/06/2026 15:53

I think it looks fun....and more importantly it looks really tasty 😋.

But say you had bought it… rather than embarrassed I’d be disappointed with the cake baker

and then tell all the guests that I’d had a bit of crappy experience with a local baker and probs my have a chuckle about it.

Embarrassed? No

BlokeyMcBlokersonVonMannSplainHeim · 25/06/2026 18:09

It's adorable, but how to vote on this one is above my pay grade.

I'd be happy to be served this cake at my old age, never mind 8 years old.

Lurkingandlearning · 25/06/2026 19:48

If your child is half as nice as you sound I'm sure they will be happy with it.

Mcoco · 26/06/2026 07:54

So many mums buy cakes OP. Yours has been lovingly made be proud!

MurunBuchstansangursCousinRossiter · 26/06/2026 07:59

I mean it’s clearly home made but it looks delicious. Whats not to like?

Tamtim · 26/06/2026 08:06

I’d think it was fab if it was brought out at any kids party I was attending with my kids. I love a homemade cake.

I have always “lovingly” purchased my children’s cakes

I assume you had to keep it in the fridge in this weather? Unfortunately that always makes the sponge a little drier. I bet it was lovely!

Well, I’m not surprised! Sponge cake is best eaten within a couple of days.

DetectiveDouche · 25/06/2026 06:34

@inappropriateraspberry You probably owe it to your daughter to teach her to see beauty in imperfection and the value of something produced with love. .she might end up a tad entitled otherwise.

Edited

No, she’s just used to better looking homemade cakes!

@inappropriateraspberry Aw, don't be a meanie, people have different skills levels and this one was a good effort. It went down well at the party and that's the important thing.

Dread to think what you'd have said about my Hogwarts Castle attempt, especially after one of the towers fell off in the car. 😂

You made it quite far in advance for a party on Saturday so I’m not surprised dry, especially as you had to store it in the fridge!

Yes but sadly she’s not been blessed with a particularly nice mother has she @inappropriateraspberry so it’s swings and roundabouts

Going against the grain given the wider context, I can see an eight year old being embarrassed because it isn’t like the cakes her friends have had at their parties. Some kids are totally fine with standing out and being different, but a lot just want to fit in and be like their friends.

On a personal level, it wouldn’t bother me at all, but I’m not the kid in question.

I would be embarrassed to have an 8 year old shallow enough to worry what her friends think about her cake, and sad that she has friends who already care so much about image and money
