We are always self critical OP! I've always made our DC cakes. Some are quite amazing and some... well..... eek. But DC just saw me (and sometimes DH) making their cakes and saw it as exciting and personal & they got what they wanted.

Last year I asked DS13 if he wanted a bought cake instead and he said no, he prefers our home made ones. (I'm over making them so darn!)

I've always seen it as something we can do for our DC that will be special memories, since they don't get fancy privileges like other DC in the family.

euff · 23/06/2026 22:04

It’s cute and homemade tastes great.

Viviennemary · 23/06/2026 22:12

Ritaskitchen · 23/06/2026 14:36

I wouldn’t be happy if it was a professionally baked cake that I had paid for.
As a home baker it’s a fantastic and imaginative effort. It wouldn’t be embarrassing. It’s a fun cake.

It is not clear from the opening post how old OP's DD is and it doesnt say she made the cake herself. How come some posters know this. ESP?

Hallywally · 23/06/2026 22:14

My DD gets a Sainsbury’s cake. She’d be over the moon with that 🤣

Summersongroses · 23/06/2026 22:23

I think it looks really lovely! (And looks tasty!) Well done OP you should not be embarrassed at all to serve that, it’s great and made with love!

pontipinemum · 23/06/2026 22:23

I wasn't sure what way the voting meant so I said YABU to think it's embarrassing.

It's perfect for a childs birthday and once it tastes good they'll be delighted. I always make my sons cakes and they do not look professional

lizzielizard · 23/06/2026 22:25

Love it. I want one!

But your comment was harsh. Why make someone feel bad?

Because she’s a real nasty piece of work…she’s posted on here for years, always mean, nasty, bitchy comments.

Just ignore her…she’s not worth the rise 👌🏻

GoldenGretchen · 23/06/2026 22:27

My 8 year old just saw it and said “that’s a nice cake”.

ApplesAreNotRaspberries · 23/06/2026 22:30

I see your DD loves it and that's the only thing that matters. Personally I think it's absolutely fantastic. I can't ice neatly for the love of me so I think that's pretty decent. Anyway the capybaras are so cute that they really draw the eye. It also looks chocolatey and delicious. 😍

For the kids' birthday parties I normally buy the pre iced m & s ones and use coloured icing and stick decorations on top based on their current interest. When dd was 8 I couldn't think of anything and had no time so I just stuck a lot of edible flowers on it. I thought It was really boring and just horrible. But then It was the only year where the kids at the party went
"oooh it's so beautiful". 😎

Shoopshawady · 23/06/2026 22:34

It’s great well done!!

pambeesleyhalpert · 23/06/2026 22:39

It’s fantastic!!! Glad your daughter loves it!

seriousandloyal · 23/06/2026 22:40

I think it looks lovely

MarthaBerry · 23/06/2026 22:42

It’ll taste way nicer too I’ll wager. I had a beautiful cake recently. Stunning. But I couldn’t finish a piece

GreyRooted · 23/06/2026 22:51

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 21:51

As long as it is to her, that’s all I really wanted
I can cope with adults thinking it’s crap at this point 🤣

I didn’t read the whole thread but I’ve just skimmed the next few comments suggesting others have been negative about it. Honestly, if that’s the case, ignore the feckers. My first cake was hilarious! But also very enjoyed.

Ohhh, I love that! 🩷☺️

BotterMon · 23/06/2026 22:53

Your daughter is right. It is amazing and far better a cake made with care and love rather than just a wallet.

PetiteParakeet · 23/06/2026 23:00

canklesmctacotits · 23/06/2026 18:09

It’s very cute and looks intentionally so! And from someone who also lives in an area where birthdays are often ridiculously OTT, I bet you’ll be doing lots of people a favour in making this OK. Nobody likes spending £300 on a kids’ birthday cake…

Is that an exaggeration for comic effect? £300 on a child’s birthday cake?!

TeaAndTattoos · 23/06/2026 23:01

it looks to me like a homemade cake done by a mum who is willing to spend hours making a cake for her daughter. It doesn’t matter what it looks like your daughter is going to be so happy with it knowing that you spent all that time doing it for her. That’s a memory that she will treasure forever,

MegJoBethandAmytoo · 23/06/2026 23:01

It looks fine. I don't see the point of paying a huge sum of money for a child's birthday cake. I used to make / sell cakes and whilst a lot of effort can be involved, not everyone has that sort of spare cash to spend on a cake. I bet it tastes lovely.

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/06/2026 23:02

I always made DDs cakes. I make great cake but I’m no decorator. She never minded, has great memories of her cakes, her flatmates at Uni asked me to make cakes for them. I bought one once. A Barbie doll cake when she had her first school class party. It was pretty inedible.

runningonberocca · 23/06/2026 23:08

I think it’s really cute! I’d love it!

KaleQueen · 23/06/2026 23:14

I always pimp a cake rather than buy a ridiculously expensive made one. Yours looks fab. A woman after my own heart! This was my ‘best’ effort recently and I thought it looked shit 🤣 but everyone loved it. Was also gluten free for family allergies - two M n S free from Victoria sponges stuck together. Total cost - about a tenner.
