It’s lovely
when I was growing up my mum made my cake every year
when I was 18 she gave me a photo album with a photo of me and each of her creations every year and she did the same for my sister
she is no longer with us but we keep it going and me and my sister make them for each other and we do the same for our kids.

it’s a lovely cake 🎂

Rosesandthorns66 · 23/06/2026 20:50

Well done OP, it looks great!

DiscoCherries · 23/06/2026 20:54

homemade cakes are the best cakes!

if it’s your daughter being embarrassed that’s worrying you why not just let her see it before the party?

GetAbsOrDieTrying · 23/06/2026 20:55

As long as it tastes good and your Dd likes it, it will be fine. I often find with cakes which look perfect and are made by a professional baker, they actually taste quite awful. Attended a few parties where people had spent £80-120 on professional cakes which tasted absolutely awful. On the other hand have attended a few parties with very simple homemade cakes which were just amazing taste wise! So don’t stress, I am sure it will be delicious.

DaftOpalPoet · 23/06/2026 20:59

Can you make one the same for me?

Wdutua · 23/06/2026 21:03

It looks like it was made with much love and time. Anyone can buy a ready made cake. This is a really special one off and you should be proud. As it is homemade it doesn't matter how it cuts, it will taste delicious.

Critics of your cake are jealous as they can't or won't do one for their child.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 23/06/2026 21:04

Could the icing be a bit smoother? Yes, will your 8 year old and her friends care? Unlikely! I make all my kids cakes and they love it! Are they perfect? No! But I’m not a professional cake maker. My cakes taste good, they aren’t always perfectly neat. They still remember the cakes I’ve made them.

Is trying to smooth chocolate ganache over a cake in 30 odd degreee heat a good idea? Also no! For DD’s first birthday cake I swore at the ganache more times than a care to recall. It was a heatwave and I had to spread, chill, spread, chill, repeat. The kids got lemon cake with fondant icing for a few years after that.

I made a chocolate fudge cake one Easter as it’s DH’s fav and ever since then the kids have wanted that exact chocolate cake! DS sets me up to fail by saying ‘mummy makes the best chocolate cake in the world’ to his mates in advance just to take the pressure off me 🤣

💯
I have been buying pro cakes for my dc and I am always disappointed by the icing being so plain. What happened to adding powdered sugar and vanilla??? I make amazing icing, but my cakes are never tender enough and I'm not a great decorator, either. 🤷‍♀️

Bigears6789 · 23/06/2026 21:11

I think it’s great. In a world of everybody trying to reach perfection, instagrammable lives, it’s a breath of fresh air. Your daughter will remember that you made it rather than threw a load of money at it. It looks delicious too

Fourleggedfanatic · 23/06/2026 21:16

It looks great to me- I’d be really proud of that!

TheresDirtInTheYurt · 23/06/2026 21:17

I love a homemade cake at a party! My heart always sinks a little when I see an insta-perfect cake because IME they're often quite dry (maybe they need to be for some cake decorating reason that im unaware of?) and the icing is always that really dry rollout icing, usually half as thick as the slice of cake.
If I saw this at a party I would look forward to eating it - which is the point of a cake after all! Plus it doesn't look half bad at all!
FWIW I always felt really loved and seen as a child when my mum made a birthday cake that reflected my current obsession. I bet your daughter will love it 🥰

hourspassed · 23/06/2026 21:31

It's super cute! Any child who loves a capybara would be thrilled with it.

Duckswaddle · 23/06/2026 21:39

It looks ace, stop worrying.

Greengage1983 · 23/06/2026 21:42

Assuming YABU = yabu to feel embarrassed - it is NOT an embarrassing cake.

I'd be well chuffed if I'd made that, and I'd be telling everyone I'd made it myself.

It looks yummy too.

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 21:49

SO overwhelmed by all the lovely comments! 🥺
It’s so nice to hear people saying positive things, thank you!

Showed it Dd, let her open the fridge whilst I was in the other room, she shouted ‘Oh my god!’ 😂

Me: ‘Is it ok?’ 😬

Her: ‘It’s not ok….It’s amazing!!!’

Phew 😅

As a cake maker I love seeing people’s creations. This is fabulous and absolutely not embarrassing as all!

Juststickitonthetopandcallitaday · 23/06/2026 21:51

As long as it is to her, that’s all I really wanted
I can cope with adults thinking it’s crap at this point 🤣

See, you were worrying for no reason! I'm glad she loves it, she'd be mad not to, it's so cute and looks delicious

That's all that matters - ignore all the snooty arseholes on here.

The shit that people can get judgy about - it's a cake ffs, absolutely hate this obsession with everything having to be "perfect" and "professional" blah blah.....

These people need to unclench and enjoy life!

queenMab99 · 23/06/2026 21:55

The cake is not embarrassing, I bet it tastes really good! Have confidence in yourself, and the way you do things, you don't have to follow the crowd! Just liberate yourself from the worry of trying to get things right. Children's parties shouldn't be a source of worry! We had egg butties, crisps and jellies, at home with a home made cake. Games in the garden, pass the parcel, musical bumps etc. Some people hired halls or took a group to Macdonald's, but things have gone ridiculously competitive nowadays, compared to the 70s and 80s. Think Motherland! Not Amanda, more Liz and Julia, but without the crap entertainer😂

I am in my mid forties.

You could buy me a thousand store-bought or designer cakes. Fondant a mile high. Fancy doodads and loopy writing.

I would trade them all just for a slice of one of my mother's homemade cakes.

I think it's a lovely cake OP, it looks like it will be tasty and one day your child will look back and realise the time and effort you spent making it.

This has reminded me of a cake my mum used to bake that we all called oveney cake. Cooking was not really her thing but sometimes she would make an all-in-one sponge with desicated coconut added to the sponge mix. it was cooked in a single cake tin and we always ate it while it was still warm from the oven. It was melt in the mouth gorgeous, not a Bake Off show stopper but such a delicious treat. I can almost smell and taste it as I type this

Hotterthebetter · 23/06/2026 22:04

I don’t get all the criticism. I’d be bloody proud as punch if I could bake a cake that looked like that and I don’t think I’ve ever heard kids critiquing a cake at a party either.

Good job OP!❤️
