He came into government at a challenging time - I didn’t realise his confidence score was so so The fatal flaw that brought Keir Starmer crashing down to earth

The fatal flaw that brought Keir Starmer crashing down to earth

How did a prime minister who won a landslide become the most unpopular in modern times?

That doesn't matter - dontcha know they just jump back on a dinghy - those small boat crossings are a right lark and everyone KNOWS you just jump off, collect your £40k and then do it all again.

@Dragonscaledaisy they may not have smashed the gangs but immigration has fallen, including small boat crossings. Deportations have also risen. Why isn't that enough?

Well I’m sure that’s what GBeebies ‘news’ would have us believe…

Wouldn't it make sense to find out how his back benchers felt before making these massive announcements though?

depends on the situation and context at the time, not to mention how honest are eveyone you know at saying what they mean ? then apply that to the back benchers how many say one thing then another person or group changes that persons ideas but that back bencher does not say to the pm they changed their mind ?

seems like everyone thinks all politicans are honest and trustworhy and that no one has egos; ambitions etc

There isn't such a channel. GB News hosts different political opinions. In fact, there was a left wing commentator today who I thought talked a lot of common sense. Do you close your mind to alternative opinions and just use childish nicknames?

Unfortunately this is UK politics now. The same will happen to Burnham and the next guy and the next....

So much instability is awful. Thr media and general public love the pantomime of it all and drama. So here we go again....

Exactly. The hero Burnham will fall soon after he takes office. It’s so predictable and draining.

It was all that McSweeney, Mandelson Labour crowd. They were happy to push forward the toolmaker line and KS, but it’s tanked.

Tgis is actually where they went wrong. If you let the Prince of Darkness and his evil sidekick pick thebparty leader then it really is no wonder...alsp makes sense why Starmer was so keen to keep him in despite the Epstein/Trump files.

GB News is literally the mouthpiece of Reform UK Ltd. It isn’t even a news channel, it has to be designated as ‘entertainment’ to circumnavigate unbiased reporting. Notwithstanding all that, they have been fined multiple times by OFCOM for their inaccurate and biased propaganda.

Well they aren't alone are they? Farage and Trump have both been on the receiving end of inaccurate reporting from the BBC.

The BBC are hardly impartial.

Certainly not to the same degree though. The inaccuracies by the BBC were a one-off, weren’t intentional and were corrected when identified. GB News however is just relentless gaslighting.

The BBC doesn’t broadcast right wing propaganda all day long, there’s no comparison.

Correct, they do veer to the right somewhat, especially FB on QT, but at least they do attempt to report the news without bias, whereas GB News is just relentless gaslighting.

No the BBC are very left wing. They made up and doctored footage about Trump to suit their own purpose.

Because it doesn't address the issues that people like that poster consider the most important. As I said previously - if Labour don''t start listening and discussing these issues, they're will hand victory to Reform in the next GE.

unistress · 22/06/2026 21:29

What? So fewer people coming in via all means and more people going out doesn't address people's concerns about immigration?? What do these people want?

The bendy bananas myth has widely been debunked. It is thought to have originated by a writer in the Daily Mail (Quelle surprise!)

The bendy bananas myth has widely been debunked

Disingenuously debunked. I don't know how you can read this article in the Guardian from 2008 and then claim that EU overregulation on fruit and veg was made up by the Daily Mail;

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2008/nov/02/sainsbury-supermarkets-eu-regulation-halloween

unistress · 22/06/2026 22:22

Omg - they had regulations and quality standards about fruit and veg to protect consumers from any old crap being sold. They didn't ban bendy bananas. Ok?

But we know for a fact that it’s costing us £100bn per year due to lost revenue to the treasury (ONS data). A permanent loss of 6-8% of GDP according to BoE analysis. Just think what we could be spending that £2,000,000,000 per week on.

Nonsense - neither of these estimates are facts in the slightest.

Clavinova · 22/06/2026 22:30

Did you read the Guardian article?

Yes, I did - did you? I ask because it doesn't mention bananas and seems to focus on produce grown in this country and growers' frustration that some of it didn't meet the rules. I don't know if you're aware, but we don't grow bananas in this country. Since Brexit, I have found fruit and veg sections of supermarkets in this country to often be depressing, with lots of empty spaces. In Europe when I visit they are remain vibrant and plentiful, so I don't feel the rules in the 17 year old article you took the time to link have had much of a detrimental impact on the ability of European supermarkets to stock plenty of fresh produce.

Cleocaterpillar · 23/06/2026 06:07

I'm in the middle of watching Homeland on Netflix and the political games and maneuvering look so familiar to what is currently happening here and in the US.

Campaigns of disinformation, bot farms, boots on the ground (in the form of protestors) all designed to weaken the current establishment. Also this TikTok on propaganda is fascinating

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZNRTM3LTJ/

Trump, Farage, Musk, and Boris all come across as bumbling, thick, emotionally-stunted individuals that are happy to just open their mouths and let the shit fall out. But when you step back and see it as a whole, it does look like it's actually a carefully thought out strategy. The question is for who? America and the UK wrote the playbook on destabilising governments for personal gain so how is it being used against us?

*adjusts tin foil hat.

Certainly the European Commission themselves said it was a myth, so straight from the horse’s mouth I guess. This is an old article, but nevertheless has some other amusing myths: news.sky.com/story/the-top-10-european-union-myths-debunked-10404440

Hmm, now what a dilemma. Should I believe years of in-depth research by top expert analysts at the Bank of England, or the little rants of some random mumsnetter. Tough one that.
