He came into government at a challenging time - I didn’t realise his confidence score was so so The fatal flaw that brought Keir Starmer crashing down to earth

The fatal flaw that brought Keir Starmer crashing down to earth

How did a prime minister who won a landslide become the most unpopular in modern times?

Interesting how some keenly refer to Liz Truss as a wet lettuce, yet call misogyny against Rachel from accounts. I also remember Truss' facial expressions being mocked. Another incoming male PM for Labour though - such progression. While the female Labour MPs will need to peacock around their new leader to get a look in.

DefiantRabbit9 · 22/06/2026 08:32

The only good decision he made was to keep us out of President Fart's illegal war.

Labour are paying people who come over on dingies £10k each to withdraw their asylum claims. They are paying up to £40k per family of 4. They withdraw their claims and take the £10k each go back and give to their families where they previously lived and within 5 months are back on the dingie claiming asylum again. That's why assulum numbers appear to have reduced. Labour are bankrupting the UK.

That's not true though is it? I think you mean the scheme where people whose applications have already failed were offered that amount to leave, which is much cheaper than them just staying here. But you won't believe that because you'd rather be frothing that they are all being handed out £40k as soon as they get off the boats wouldn't you? Facts just get in the way of the frothing.

That is even worse then. If asylum has failed why would they not just be deported? Why are we paying people who have no right to asylum to go?

I feel sad as it’d just another PM gone… and I’m actually a little afraid of what’s to come.

The truth is money is being paid at £10k per illegal immigrant.

Problem is every PM since Brexit has been handed a poisoned challis, and no-one so far has had the balls to truly confront that elephant in the room. I think Starmer was getting there, but still dancing around the edges somewhat. I think it’s fair to say he’s been hounded out by the predominantly right-wing press and media. Hopefully if Andy steps up then he’ll hold his nerve, ignore the elderly naysayers and get on with what needs to be done.

Brexit isn't the start and finish of all the problems, even though it keeps being pushed as such.

But we know for a fact that it’s costing us £100bn per year due to lost revenue to the treasury (ONS data). A permanent loss of 6-8% of GDP according to BoE analysis. Just think what we could be spending that £2,000,000,000 per week on.

Knowing all the useless fools we have had it would be many more hare brained ideas that would fail and run over budget and be giving to a friend’s.

Pissed up the wall on expenses, second homes, free dinners and what not.

Never anything useful.

It was either made up bullshit like Johnson's bendy bananas

I don't think the bendy bananas stuff actually was nonsense when first reported. Similar complaints here in the Guardian 2008;

Outraged Sainsbury's drops plan to sell wonky vegetables because staff could be prosecuted.

A leading supermarket has been forced to ditch a healthy eating campaign at the eleventh hour after discovering its staff could be individually prosecuted under EU regulations...

The retailer has written to the EU Agriculture Commissioner, Mariann Fischer Boel, and Environment Secretary Hilary Benn expressing its concerns over 'bonkers' regulations and has launched an online poll for customers to join the fight for 'wonky' fruit and veg.

Strict EU regulations dictate the shape, size and appearance of 36 fruits and vegetables. For example, it is illegal for supermarkets to sell a cauliflower less than 11cm in diameter, carrots that are forked (with more than one root) or onions with less than two-thirds covered in skin.

The regulations mean that an estimated 20 per cent of British farmers' produce goes to waste.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2008/nov/02/sainsbury-supermarkets-eu-regulation-halloween

The bendy bananas myth has widely been debunked. It is thought to have originated by a writer in the Daily Mail (Quelle surprise!)

I find it incredible that he is viewed as the most unpopular PM when we've previously had the lettuce and Boris the buffoon. The facts are that this government is making progress, it is the right wing press that has gone after Starmer from the start. We are ditching a decent moral PM for some northern bloke with a massive sense of entitlement who has stabbed him in back. Nothing will change. This plays right into Reform's hands. Disgusted with the Labour MPs who are just looking to save their own skin.

As opposed to some southern bloke with a massive sense of entitlement that's just resigned. 😂

The posters referring to failed asylum seekers. I guess it's a poorly thought through attempt to stop the endless appeals but as the poster pointed out, the risk is that they'll take the money and come straight back again.

Well, it's a pilot scheme so presumably (current political turmoil notwithstanding) if it's found that this is the case or that it's otherwise not cost effective then it will be halted. But no, let's all carry on wailing and stamping our feet and insisting that they're all jumping off the boats, collecting 10 or 40k then, what, catching a flight home and then doing it all again?

Well there's evidence that this is what happened with the one in one out scheme so presumably that's where the concerns have come from. If people want to wail and stamp their feet about immigration issues then they have the option of voting Reform at the next GE. The rest of us expect to see well thought out solutions proposed by the current government which is what we're lacking. Remember this is the same government that repeatedly announced how they were going to 'smash the gangs' not so long ago. I notice that's now been quietly forgotten. Start listening and start discussing the issues openly - it really is that simple.

But the OP post simply isn’t true. The notional £10k payment is only made if there are very extenuating circumstances, and acceptance triggers an automatic re-entry ban.

That doesn't matter - dontcha know they just jump back on a dinghy - those small boat crossings are a right lark and everyone KNOWS you just jump off, collect your £40k and then do it all again.

@Dragonscaledaisy they may not have smashed the gangs but immigration has fallen, including small boat crossings. Deportations have also risen. Why isn't that enough?

People don't like his flip flopping around. He is the king of U turns.

but the issue is, the public never seem to realise the pm cannot just say im boss and we are doing this, there has to be deals, made agreements with other figures in power etc so yes it seems like u turns but how many are down to needing the people etc

You're right but the right decisions should be made in the first place. I've never known such a kneejerk government.

True.
