Question for the 'mellow yellow' folk

I'm well aware that I am going to sound like piss troll but a quick search of my history should prove otherwise!

I'm on holiday with inlaws, I have a tendency to get irritable when I'm forced into close quarters with others so am after an honest reality check from you all.

MN has taught me that lots of people don't flush their pee every time, especially overnight, for environmental reasons or because of noisy plumbing. Cool, I don't leave mine but I understand why people do.

AIBU to think that even if it's your normal family practice not to, you might flush more often when;

  1. staying with other people who you are not as close to (i.e. not related by blood, have not shared a home before and in one case not met before)
  2. bathrooms are absolutely tiny and anyone entering after you is going to have to manoeuvre around the toilet in order to flush after you so they can use it
  3. you are unwell and your pee looks like tea and reeks

AIBU to also think that the lid should be closed on unflushed pee, so as not to let the smell fill the room?

We are all jetlagged so up and down at all hours of the night and I'm getting very sick of being confronted by the sights and smells of other people's piss, but happy to be told if I'm being precious.

Other possibly relevant info - I am the only woman.

I think it is actually different being a woman. A man will wee from height. A woman will be much closer to the wee and when she wees some minor contents of the bowl may splash up.

Don’t live alone, full family, and my DC have been brought up in a quiet household, but never afraid to flush the loo.

So if one of them said, mum every time you flush the loo at 2am I wake up and then can't get back to sleep until 4am, you'd say "sorry that's on you!"?

They’re not that fragile.
And we all go to the loo before we go to bed.

Ha ha yes, of course, how deep you sleep is all about how strong you are as a person 😂I get that people like to emphasise random little traits to make themselves feel superior but I can't say I've ever heard someone say "I'm so mentally strong I can sleep through a FLUSH"

SqueakyFromme · Yesterday 22:35

IME men pissing is even louder that the small flush

ToffeeCrabApple · Yesterday 22:35

The pee is in the loo. You aren't touching it. If the smell bothers you can you have windows open? Just don't look at the loo and flush it immediately as you go in.

If you are very particular about this sort of thing you are better choosing en suite accomodation.

I find teens & younger people are much more environmentally conscious and keen to reduce water waste etc, the mellow yellow vibe is much more common these days.

Woodfiresareamazing2 · Yesterday 22:43

I can totally understand why you are revolted by continually being faced with strange (ie unknown by you) men's pee.

We have 5 loos in our house, it's mostly just me and my DP (eventually planning on Air bnb when renovations finished), and pretty much every time I go to use a loo, there's pee in it.

Even worse for me is the pee on the rim and the floor 🤮

I get that men's equipment might mean they miss a little, or it splatters a bit, but I don't get how they don't clean up after themselves! 🤬 There's really no excuse.

I hope your OH has a word and everyone starts flushing ...

livelovelough24 · Yesterday 23:01

I had no idea that there are people out there who do not flush their toilets. You learn something every day, I guess.

ThisOneLife · Yesterday 23:11

Jamesblonde2 · Yesterday 15:57

Well it’s only shit, it’s not going to hurt you, but it would be downright disgusting to leave a shit in the loo.

Bloody hell where are people getting their standards from? It’s not medieval times people!

Urine is sterile and will not hurt you, it’s even drinkable.

Faeces on the other hand containing many bacteria which can hurt you and shoujd not be ingested.

Simple enough for you?

Urine is not sterile. It is a myth!

Men’s pee smells stronger than women’s. YANBU.

It's sterile in the bladder but by the time it's exited the body it's not and you shouldn't drink it (unless you'll die of thirst if you don't). Imagine the difference between drinking rainwater straight out of the cloud versus drinking it from a puddle on the ground.

Kidney disease can turn your wee very dark.

Interstitial cystitis can make it distinctively smelly

Hankunamatata · Today 03:22

No flushing at night excwpt for poo. As wakes everyone up. Otherwise flush

Jasmine222 · Today 04:36

Yes the guy is being weird. Apart from that, I agree with you OP that navigating changing room etiquette is complicated when you're a Mum taking a boy swimming. I started sending my son to the men's changing rooms alone aged 9 but I'm anxious every time. However he loves swimming. When he was 8 I started to get funny looks and a woman complained, so I didn't feel I had a choice.

It's only pee. It's not going to hurt you.

So let's all sit around farting or burping loudly, or picking our noses and eating bogies, or digging in our navels, and while we're at it, let's clip our toenails into the waste paper basket beside the couch.

None of that hurts others, after all.

No, you just know some very badly brought up teens and young people.

"If someone can’t get back to sleep, then that’s on them!"

That's such a selfish opinion. I don't like leaving the toilet unflushed, but I live with a really light sleeper who finds it really hard to get back to sleep when woken up. Sleep deprivation is miserable. I can't imagine a world in which I would knowingly wake them up and ruin their sleep every single night and then blame them. Perhaps you live alone but compromise is important! Even over piss 😂

Never heard of a white or brown noise machine?

For people that do this day and night does the toilet not get super stinky if multiple wees are just left? Part of flushing is to clean the toilet as well as remove waste after all.

also YANBU

No, my pee doesn't smell because I drink enough and am healthy.

It wouldn't bother me what people I'm sharing accommodation with, though I'd flush before using it in the morning. I don't flush at night at home but I do have my own ensuite and it doesn't smell. Always flush during the day.

SunIsGreat · Today 05:03

Person #3 really needs a doctor. As does anyone that smells strong if it's not temporary. But especially person 3.

Fever (infection) plus being Gen Z and living almost exclusively on Monsters.

Also serious liver issues.

To the mellow yellow crowd - how do you feel about leaving (or finding) menstrual blood, clots, etc mixed in with the pee in the pan?

That should never happen.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · Today 05:33

Thanks to everyone who's worried about my tea pee guy. He was sick at the start of the week, he's on the mend. He could definitely hydrate and just generally look after himself better but that's not my battle to fight.
