To be verbally abused by this dog owner

This is an extremely honest account of what happened to me this evening and I am still shook up over now. Out walking my dog with my 2 sons age 2 and 6 dog is very friendly & likes to play, we pass a dog with his male owner and 3 sons near some outdoor fitness equipment both his and my dog are off lead so my dog goes over to say hello both dogs are excited and run in a circle around the fitness equipment. I turned my head and in that moment it is alleged my dog ran and knocked over the man’s son who is obviously upset. I ask if that was my dog and if so I’m sorry and hope the boy is okay. To which I am given a torrent of abuse, the man shouts at me to get my dog under control and on lead. I said sorry she is very friendly and wouldn’t have meant to it was an accident and his dog was playing too. He continued screaming and shouting at me telling me to train my dog and if I didn’t he would train it for me... I was so took aback I asked if he was joking then when he continued shouting I asked if he would just stop so I could firstly put my dog on a lead (I really didn’t need to as she had come back & has good recall but I didn’t want to provoke anything) and secondly not shout round the children (my 6 yr
old was visibly distressed) I got the dog on the lead and as I was walking away he shouted arsehole. I am ashamed to say I was so stressed and upset I actually soiled myself and can’t stop shaking and crying about this. Was I in the wrong here??

Ive only briefly read this thread but didn't the OP say she didn't even see her dog knock the kid over? So it could have been his dog? Or both of them? Or maybe the kid just fell over! Angry man could have made it up just because he fancied shouting at a woman and intimidating her.

I read both dogs were running around excited. Either one could have hit his child.

It is not hard. OP had only posted twice.

Surely this post is a wind up? 🤣

Do you think? Aww im quite invested in this story now!!!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/06/2026 18:36

He sounds vile, I’m sorry this happened to you op.

i always put my dog on lead around other dogs as it’s just not worth the hassle of any interaction.

Same.
I have also had a situation where my dog was running around with another. Totally harmless. The owner of the other dog said my dog scared her child. Her kid was no where near our dogs at all. Then she said I failed to pick up my dog's poo. Pointed out a very old and cold poo that had a foot print in it. Not my dog's poo at all.
I think some people are just out for a fight.

I think she got annoyed with the response to pooing herself. The bloke could have even pushed the kid over?!

I think only nuclear war would stop some MNers being ridiculous about dogs. Actually, not even.

Can you imagine the uproar if one of the dogs was a landlord and the other one was vaping? 😂

Or a dog claiming benefits. MN would implode.

Hello @YeOldeGreyhound I feel like we have been on a few threads with rampant dog haters. We just need that poster to pop up who insists that all dogs should be culled and replaced by robots and we will have come full circle.

Just popping up to say, all dogs should be culled and replaced by robots.

Corgiowner · 13/06/2026 19:11

I'm stunned by how much anti dog sentiment a thread about dogs can generate. Luckily I live in a country known for its tolerance, in busier areas (its all relative) there are lots dogs, the vast majority are pretty well behaved, the odd one has a bad moment and might ignore its owner but as I said above we are by nature tolerant.. Ive never seen or personally encountered any hostility toward dogs or their owners dogs. In fact the complete opposite my friend, not really not a dog lover finds endless friendly strangers interrupting our conversation to ask about my dogs slightly tedious.

I don’t think dogs should be off lead in public spaces for this reason. Accidents happen and they aren’t fully under control. However it’s rich of him to kick off when his dogs were off lead too. It could just have easily been one of his dogs that did it.

As for the soiling, classic fight or flight. Your body perceived danger and tried to lighten itself as quickly as possible to make it easier to run away/fight. A very well known response to severe anxiety and not something that needs medical assessment unless it’s happening all the time. Maybe the ignorant posters with the mentality of school children who find that part so amusing should grow up and educate themselves a bit.

Not really, some dogs have good spatial awareness and some don’t. My dog is as clumsy as they come and would easily crash into something or someone, whereas my last one just knew his distances.

Leavesandthings · 13/06/2026 19:55

I haven't read the whole thread but given BOTH dogs were running around playing, there was a risk either could have taken one of the children out.

He was being as equally blase with his dog as you were yours, and therefore shouldn't have shouted at you.

ThreadGuardDog · 13/06/2026 20:35

Charlize43 · 13/06/2026 15:09

Those are potential dog owners and they need to be stopped.

If you didn't have a dog, you wouldn't experience these pesky people.

The OP wouldn't have soiled herself if she didn't have a kid knocking dog - you can see how it all rapidly spirals out of control.

Dog ownership ends with a demolished child and a girthy fudge dragon in your gusset

MysticPearl · 13/06/2026 20:42

You got shouted at about your dogs behaviour and shit yourself? Wow.
Although I will say I do not like off-leash dogs in general (so I guess both his and yours) as numerous times had them come up to me/my kids while the owner shouts ‘they’re friendly’ from 20m away..

ThreadGuardDog · 13/06/2026 20:47

Gloriia · 13/06/2026 15:21

There is nothing 'insulting' or 'hilarious' about someone having mental health problems or incontinence. Attitudes like yours are what stops people seeking advice and help.

I didn’t say someone having mental health problems or incontinence was hilarious. I said your insinuation that OP had either would have been hilarious had it not been so insulting, based on what she posted here. But then you knew that.

ThreadGuardDog · 13/06/2026 20:51

...but didn't.

Well we only have his word for that don’t we ? Since OP didn’t see it.

Dinggirl · 13/06/2026 20:52

Both dogs were off lead, both dogs were playing. I bet he would never have spoken to you like that if you were a man. I'm so sorry OP, I've had a vile man shout at me like that and my dog hadn't even approached his, he admitted his was reactive (it was off lead) and shouted at me to get my dog on a lead, when he was the one with the aggressive off lead dog! Had he asked nicely I'd've obliged, but he was so nasty I was furious, went marching over and gave as good as I got and refused to be intimidated. He looked sheepish and didn't know what to say 🤣 I hope you're ok now x

KrazyKatty · 13/06/2026 20:55

I’m a dog owner and it pisses me off when other entitled owners don’t bother with a lead and respond to a boisterous dog with ‘aw they’re just being friendly’.

If you want to let your dog run free without bothering others, buy a field!!

But OP's dog was running around with the man's dog too. His dog was also offlead.
