To be verbally abused by this dog owner

moana1234 · Yesterday 23:13

This is an extremely honest account of what happened to me this evening and I am still shook up over now. Out walking my dog with my 2 sons age 2 and 6 dog is very friendly & likes to play, we pass a dog with his male owner and 3 sons near some outdoor fitness equipment both his and my dog are off lead so my dog goes over to say hello both dogs are excited and run in a circle around the fitness equipment. I turned my head and in that moment it is alleged my dog ran and knocked over the man’s son who is obviously upset. I ask if that was my dog and if so I’m sorry and hope the boy is okay. To which I am given a torrent of abuse, the man shouts at me to get my dog under control and on lead. I said sorry she is very friendly and wouldn’t have meant to it was an accident and his dog was playing too. He continued screaming and shouting at me telling me to train my dog and if I didn’t he would train it for me... I was so took aback I asked if he was joking then when he continued shouting I asked if he would just stop so I could firstly put my dog on a lead (I really didn’t need to as she had come back & has good recall but I didn’t want to provoke anything) and secondly not shout round the children (my 6 yr
old was visibly distressed) I got the dog on the lead and as I was walking away he shouted arsehole. I am ashamed to say I was so stressed and upset I actually soiled myself and can’t stop shaking and crying about this. Was I in the wrong here??

The bloke is an absolute arse, OP people are so aggressive now. I had someone yell and rant at me the other day over something I wasn't even doing what they thought I was - they calmed down when they realised the misunderstanding, but I find people just go off on one, especially men, but Ive had woman as well. There is an air of aggression in people these days that did not exist years ago. This male is a shining example of a parent. Don't know of you saw a story the other day of a male beating up a seagull in St Ives, look it up, another example of uncontrolled aggression.

I could say I’m tired of people calling my dog over crouching down waggling their hands in his face making squeaky noises touching his enormous ears (which he doesn’t really like) and then complaining he’s jumped up at them complaining he’s muddy or licks them. Ignore him and he ignores you talk to him try and attract his attention then don’t moan if he comes over jumps up etc.
Or my other very human uninterested dog who people insist on trying to touch because she’s “soooo pretty” even though she very obviously doesn’t like it and are asked too leave her alone.
But do you know what I accept that it’s not a perfect world many people don’t understand dogs and there are dog owners who don’t train their properly.

Those are potential dog owners and they need to be stopped.

If you didn't have a dog, you wouldn't experience these pesky people.

The OP wouldn't have soiled herself if she didn't have a kid knocking dog - you can see how it all rapidly spirals out of control.

Marmalademorning · Today 15:14

Wow, that man was a total jerk OP. I bet he’s a dickhead driver too. Don’t give yourself a hard time over this. It sounds like a horrible encounter. I feel sorry for this guy’s poor wife having to put up with his moods on a daily basis. Move on from it and forget about it. There are some truly horrible people in this world and unfortunately you happened to encounter one that afternoon.. 💐☕️🍪

You’re right no dogs no problems with pesky people. But life would be boring.
Dogs make you go places and do things you might not normally do. I’ve moved areas nearly all my friends are met through dog ownership. Dogs can keep you fit I walk approx. 15k steps a day. I live in a stunningly beautiful area I stand on wonderful isolated beaches watching the sun rise or set or the mist and rain I sometimes see seals whales loads of birds I wouldn’t be there as much if it wasnt for the dogs.
Ive watched demented peoples faces light up because someone brought a dog into their care home and a hysterical child on a ward allow a painful medical procedure because a therapy dog was involved.
A world without dogs is not one I’d want to live in.

OP says it’s only ever happened once. And clearly everyone is different so that’s why you don’t see it happening every day. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, and it doesn’t signify illness. Your insinuation that OP has some sort of a mental health problem and needs to wear incontinence pads would be hilarious if it wasn’t so insulting.

There is nothing 'insulting' or 'hilarious' about someone having mental health problems or incontinence. Attitudes like yours are what stops people seeking advice and help.

Fizzybluewater · Today 15:26

I get so angry when people say their dog is being friendly when the bloody thing is jumping up at me and they find it amusing.
On several occasions I have yelled at the owners [male and female] "Well I'm not friendly, so take you bloody dog and fuck off!"
They scuttle off pretty damn quick. I don't mind dogs it's some owners that are total twats ime.

You seem to "know" a lot about this man based on an incident when his protective instinct as a father made him see red because an entitled dog owner allowed her dog to knock his child over and, instead of offering an unqualified apology, came out with the usual bullshit that these people always come out with about her dog being "friendly".

I don't claim to "know" anything about him, but wanting to protect his child does not make him a bad driver or mean he has daily "moods". It's more likely his wife is grateful to have a husband who cares about his family and will stand up for them.

ohyesido · Today 15:36

This was not your fault. You didn’t deserve this treatment and it is understandable that you feel distressed about it.

this man is a spiritually undeveloped SIMPLETON who gets his jollies from attacking others he perceives as weaker than him. Be thankful you are not him or worse his wife.

im sorry this happened. Cry about it and then let it go

So you pooed yourself after a man shouted at you to control your dog who was off lead?

What if she did? Does the idea of it amuse you?

YeOldeGreyhound · Today 15:38

He sounds totally unreasonable. His dog was running around with yours too. His son could have been knocked over by his own dog.
My brother got sent flying by my parent's dog when she was doing zoomies with other dogs too.

When my dog was younger, she was zooming in a park and she collided with a small child. I went to apologise, and the mum asked if my dog was ok and then said her child should not have walked into my dog's path, but in that instance she was distracted so did not see her child wander off. It was all fine. These things happen.

You did nothing wrong.

I didn’t realise the soiling incident would get the most attention. Just to clarify this has NEVER happened to me before (apart from maybe straight after childbirth) and I was as mortified as all you lot, I googled it and it said it can happen in high stress. Thanks to those of u that responded kindly.

Ignore the gloaty goats, they don’t know any better

Velumental · Today 15:42

What kind of dog? So if your dog is a smallish dog who tripped a kid up while running about with a similar sized dog then meh.
If your dog is a big dog like Rottweiler and the other dog was a small dog and your dog jumped up paws off the ground on a child that's a whole different story.
And obviously many degrees in between

Pooping yourself? I can't decide if that means the post is disingenuous and you wanted people talking about this? Or if you're trying to underline how you're the one who was terrorized. But yeah, see the doctor.

MyLimeGuide · Today 15:42

The bloke sounds unhinged and nasty. I hope you are OK OP chalk it up as an unfortunate meeting of a barstard (there are a lot of them around)

It is possible to do all of the things you have listed and more without a stinking animal by your side. It's certainly not boring.

To everything you have listed I would add, go wherever I like whenever I like without having to accommodate the dog. To go for a walk without having to pick up shit, enjoy leisure activities without having to worry about people being pissed off by my dog. Not having a stinky-dog smell in my house...

If people are wagging their hands in your dogs face and touching his ears you have massively failed in your responsibility to safeguard him. You shouldn't be letting people get anywhere near him - this is no one's fault but yours.

Oh here we go. People with dogs are lacking in human relationships and the like. It is boring and untrue.
I have a relative who recently lost her husband, and the dog they had is a massive reason she keeps on going.

Straycats · Today 15:56

Sorry that you were so upset but I am so fed up with the million and one excuses that dog owners give about their out of control dogs.
Either have perfect recall/behaviour or keep it on a lead. End of!

Both the OP's dog and the man's dog were running around together. But he had a go at OP for her dog, when his dog was doing exactly the same.

YABU. Your dog should always be on a leash and under your control out in public.

Aw.

So? She was walking her dog off leash, they came upon the man and HER dog ran over. Her actions precipitated the event.
Im not condoning the man's response but the OP asked if she was in the wrong and imo, yes. Her dog should on a leash.

Both dogs were running around though in the same circumstances.

I have had dogs and know what mutual play and zoomies look like. The man's dog was zooming with OP's dog and could have well been the dog to hit his son over.

If nothing had happened, both owners would have walked away, and their dogs would be happy having had met a new friend.
