Do you know what blows my mind… people who have their dinner with no drink. Like no drink at all. No juice no tea no water. How do you people do it?

what do you think?

YABU - a drink with food is not necessary
YANBU - not having a drink with your food makes you a psycho!!

My dd is banned from drinking with her food due to her pouring her squash over it and drinking it ?? She doesnt then eat the food and is hungry before bed đŸ˜«

managingexpectations · 04/06/2026 19:14

I think it’s odd, I always have a drink on hand.

what’s worse is people who have food in their mouth and then take a drink and and smoosh it all together đŸ¤¢ I’m looking at you nephew it gives me the boak every time but he’s 5 so I’ll let him off.

ToadRage · 04/06/2026 19:14

I have to drink with food, due to the risk of swallow issues associated with my condition but what confuses me is people who have hot drinks with hot food. In my house hot drinks were for breakfast or mid morning or mid afternoon with a biscuit. Meals have cold drinks, soft drinks or wine/beer on the weekend. My husband and his parents always have tea or coffee with dinner. Its totally normal to him, they are weird.

Loulou4022 · 04/06/2026 19:14

I couldn’t but my mum does

Mammabear23 · 04/06/2026 19:15

When I was a child we were never allowed a drink with dinner (evening meal) at our home and at our grandparents houses. I think the reason given was that we'd fill up on liquid instead of food.
When I could make my own choice, I'd always have a drink accompanying my evening meal and I provide them for my children too. Although do limit them, because they do indeed tend to fill up on drink rather than food.

DilemmaDelilah · 04/06/2026 19:19

I have to have a drink with my food. Usually water, although a glass of milk goes down well with a bacon sandwich, and I like a beer with a curry.

concertinacornflake · 04/06/2026 19:21

a glass of milk goes down well with a bacon sandwich this is completely unacceptable

WorkCleanRepeat · 04/06/2026 19:33

I dont eat and drink at the same time. My whole family think im a weirdo but the kids always enjoy finishing my drink in restaurants because I wont touch it once food arrives.

DandelionClockSeeds · 04/06/2026 19:45

DH waits til after food to get a drink (freak).
The rest of us have drinks with our food.

I have to get my own drink with dinner if im at the in-laws. They just dont get it, then have these tiny thimble sizes cups after the food is all cleared away.

Iloveeverycat · 04/06/2026 19:49

I never do in the week but might have a glass of wine or beer at the weekend. Then again I hardly drink at all only a few cups of tea or coffee no water.

DustyMaiden · 04/06/2026 19:50

At home I always have it after.

worcesterpear · 04/06/2026 19:51

If it's something quick to eat at home, I don't always have a drink on the table with me, or if I do I don't actually drink from it while eating. It sometimes only takes me about 5 minutes to eat, and I drink plenty at other times. It's weird if you mean when going out or eating with guests/something fancy.

DanceMumTaxi · 04/06/2026 19:55

I can’t really eat without a drink at hand. I find it really odd when people don’t have a drink.

purplecorkheart · 04/06/2026 19:57

I will have a glass of water or wine with a meal. There was always a jug of water on the table with dinner when I grew up.

I cannot drink a hot drink with food. Even at breakfast I tend to wait till I finished my food to drink my tea or coffee or else drink it first.

I certainly could not drink tea or coffee with my dinner - again I think this was because coffee was always served growing up after dinner after the wash up was done.

swapsicles · 04/06/2026 19:59

Always have a drink, often I'll refill it halfway through the meal too.

FunMustard · 04/06/2026 19:59

As a child, I went out for dinner with a friend and her family. It was back in the time when orange juice came as a starter lol, and that's what I had.

That was my only drink. I asked if I could have another one, and was told I'd already had one.

Absolutely bonkers. I'm always requesting more drinks and water for the table nowadays!

Middletoleft · 04/06/2026 19:59

I've always had to have a drink with food even if it's just water. I've got a dry mouth though so without a drink then food gets stuck.

MiddleAgedDread · 04/06/2026 20:01

We never had drinks with our meals as kids and my parents still do, but now I would always have one to hand. Not tea though unless it’s breakfast, I’m not a psycho!

LilacDrift · 04/06/2026 20:03

I only have a drink with breakfast. Or if we go out to eat. At home I rarely have a drink with my dinner.

Totaldramallama · 04/06/2026 20:07

I had no idea this was something people HAD to have. I can take or leave a drink with food. Obviously some drinks go well with food and would always have a drink in restaurant, but just normal meals at home I'd usually just have a drink after unless I already had one on the go when food is served

Isobel201 · 04/06/2026 20:08

I don't know if its because I'm feeling full with the mounjaro, but I don't drink immediately after eating a meal.
