Do you know what blows my mind… people who have their dinner with no drink. Like no drink at all. No juice no tea no water. How do you people do it?

what do you think?

YABU - a drink with food is not necessary
YANBU - not having a drink with your food makes you a psycho!!

My Dad heard something on the radio, decades ago, and has refused to have a drink with food ever since. There's some reason it's bad for you, aparently.

PersephoneSmith · 04/06/2026 22:19

I never have a drink with food. Never realised it is a thing to be honest. I mean I know that people have drinks with meals in restaurants of course but my family has never had drinks on the table when eating at home!

Noseylittlemoo · 04/06/2026 22:20

I feel like I " need" a drink with food - especially if the food is not particularly juicy/saucy like a sandwich or piece of toast would feel too dry to eat without a drink.
Breakfast I would have tea or diet coke, lunch time water or diet coke and evening meal water. I might have a cocktail or glass of prosecco if I was waiting for food at a restaurant, then water with the meal. If in a restaurant I finished my water and still had food left I wouldn't be able to finish it until they brought more water!

Grumpynan · 04/06/2026 22:21

I always set out glasses and a jug of water when I set the table for dinner. Lunch we normally have a cup of tea with it. If we have a nice meal on a Saturday’s or Sunday we will perhaps open a bottle of wine, but I still put a jug of water on the table. It’s just something I’ve always done

InterestedDad37 · 04/06/2026 22:21

With my evening meal this evening, I had a vegetable smoothie, a glass of water, and a cup of green tea. đŸ¤”đŸ˜€

Yes, I think Chinese medicine also says not to drink while you're eating..I can't remember why though

Have a drink or don’t have a drink. I don’t see why people think it’s odd not to. I seldom have a drink with a meal. I have a drink when I’m thirsty

This.

Rubeeee · 04/06/2026 22:26

I genuinely don’t understand why people need to drink whilst eating! If I had difficulty swallowing my food I would be worried that it’s a health issue!

AsparagusSeason · 04/06/2026 22:27

We have a water jug on the table. But it rarely gets drunk beyond a sip. Juice or tea? They’d be at breakfast only and we very rarely eat breakfast.

LazyLaurel · 04/06/2026 22:27

I drink litres throughout the day, but it wouldn’t occur to me to specifically have one with a meal. May occasionally have wine or juice with dinner but other than that would only have one when eating out as we kind of feel obliged to.

I only have a drink with food if I'm at a restaurant. I've never even thought about it until this post!

Same

Tallestone · 04/06/2026 22:29

I have a glass of water on the go all day even in work obviously not the same one. I can't imagine not drinking water with a meal I get so dry mouthed or thirsty.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 04/06/2026 22:29

I do this all the time, but I know I don’t drink enough đŸ™ˆ

RampantIvy · 04/06/2026 22:30

I haven't noticed a single person in my life at home or at work that doesn't drink when eating, but clearly there are loads of them out there.

I have lunch with my team at work and no-one has a drink with their food.

Like I say - blows my mind!

Jamesblonde2 · 04/06/2026 22:35

This is an age thing. Older folk didn’t have drinks with food as the priority was the food to fill them up.

They didn’t drink a lot either it seems compared to younger folk now.

I think it’s very odd not to have a drink with food. I’d be parched!

I have to drink with food, due to the risk of swallow issues associated with my condition but what confuses me is people who have hot drinks with hot food. In my house hot drinks were for breakfast or mid morning or mid afternoon with a biscuit. Meals have cold drinks, soft drinks or wine/beer on the weekend. My husband and his parents always have tea or coffee with dinner. Its totally normal to him, they are weird.

I agree with you! Hot drink with hot food? Absolute weirdos. My mum will often have tea with dinners and said that’s all her and siblings had with dinner when growing up. Perhaps it’s a generational thing?

CountryGirlInTheCity · 04/06/2026 22:37

I always eat my food first and then drink my drink. A very large mug of tea at breakfast and a pint of water with lunch and dinner. I don’t like drinking and eating at the same time.

Except….if I’m out and have a glass of wine with my food - then I sip it in between eating. I know - weird!

Tallestone · 04/06/2026 22:39

My water glass is empty reading this so I'm going to fill it up im thirsty reading all this.

Shinyandnew1 · 04/06/2026 22:40

I always have a cold drink with my dinner, but hate having a cup of tea with it. Probably why I don’t like afternoon tea!

I never have a drink with food. Food bits floating in a glass ewww.

You're drinking wrong.

Tarkan · 04/06/2026 22:42

When I was a kid I was invited to a friend’s house for dinner. None of the family had a drink with food at all. I asked (politely) if I could have something and they gave me a tiny glass of lukewarm tap water and looked at me like I was the strange one. Dinner was a chicken that had been roasted until it was dry as anything, and served without any gravy or sauce so I really needed that drink with it.

Kickinthenostalgia · 04/06/2026 22:47

DS won’t touch a drink whilst eating, even when he’s eating franks hot wings, he will just wait till he’s finished and then drink…
I always have a drink, my food is mostly spicy so I need it for when my lips tingle đŸ˜‚

PollyBell · 04/06/2026 22:49

At home I dont as I want one after dinner and dishes when I am relaxed, even non alcoholic ones

This is me. Dh has a coffee machine and likes two lattes a day, one mid morning and another mid afternoon but if we've been out or running late or whatever he will make one at lunchtime and every time I have to tell him I do not like coffee with food and he doesn't understand.

I have a twisted gullet so a cold drink helps with that.
