To not have a drink with your food!?

calltheyep · 04/06/2026 19:08

Do you know what blows my mind… people who have their dinner with no drink. Like no drink at all. No juice no tea no water. How do you people do it?

what do you think?

YABU - a drink with food is not necessary
YANBU - not having a drink with your food makes you a psycho!!

My GP told me not to have a drink with my meals as it dilutes stomach acid & makes digestion harder ( I suffered with GERD) . I’m fine now though old habits die hard - I’m in the psycho camp !

This is an age thing. Older folk didn’t have drinks with food as the priority was the food to fill them up.

They didn’t drink a lot either it seems compared to younger folk now.

I think it’s very odd not to have a drink with food. I’d be parched!

How old are you thinking? We are 68 and 71 and both drink with hot food, dh has tea and i have juice or water. I do agree that we didn't drink as much water as people do now.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 04/06/2026 23:10

I find any drink with food that isn't water or alcohol weird.

juice and food - weird

fizzy drinks and food (at night, with no water) - weird

mindutopia · 04/06/2026 23:14

One of my dc is like this. It freaks me out.

But then again, I have to take medication with every meal, so I never don’t have a drink.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 04/06/2026 23:16

Hang on - are the people talking about "juice" northerners who mean squash?

juice = freshly squeezed fruit juice - good with breakfast or brunch

squash = a kids drink

Where I am “juice” can be either freshly squeezed or diluting juice. “Ginger” blew my mind the first time I heard it, that’s fizzy juice. We don’t use “squash”, that’s diluting juice 🤣

If i don’t have a drink when I eat I get hiccups!

nam3c4ang3 · 04/06/2026 23:22

we were brought up to have a glass by the food but we were only really allowed it after a meal - now as an adult I can take it or leave it but usually I would say I don’t have anything with my meal. My kids do tho.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/06/2026 23:24

I don’t drink with meals unless it’s out for a meal or coffee or tea with breakfast - no reason why, I tend to have one straight after, like eat lunch, then have tea, eat dinner at night then make a coffee etc

ScrambledTofuNeedsKalaNamak · 04/06/2026 23:35

I initially voted YANBU because I thought you meant no drink at all, like eating and then just going about your day without a drink. I've read some of the messages and it appears that you possibly mean having a physical drink there whilst you are eating. The only time I'd do this generally is if I was eating in a restaurant.

At home, I usually eat my meal and then get a drink straight after, be that water, tea, coffee or alcohol.

MyGirlJ · 04/06/2026 23:57

I don't have a drink with food, unless i'm eating out and then I'll have a glass of wine. When I was a child my Mum stopped me having drinks with meals because I'd get full up on fluids and then wouldn't eat my dinner. I suppose I've just continued like that out of habit.

rollercoastermind · 05/06/2026 00:17

@calltheyep my DH didn’t when I first met him, I found it very very odd. With training he’s now normal!

FannyNesbet · 05/06/2026 00:29

Not a chance I'll eat without a drink. I might choke and die. I find that food stacks up in my throat so I use extreme caution via hydration. Also, food tastes better with a hydrated mouth, IMO. I don't know. I never really noticed what others do so now I'm going to be starting at everyone to check what is going on out there in the world!

BlackRowan · 05/06/2026 00:33

sipping a drink during a meal is not required for digestion and can actually be bad for it. Wine is a different matter, it’s for the combination of tastes.

canklesmctacotits · 05/06/2026 00:57

How weird! Are you all not chewing your food enough? Why do you need to wash your food down?! I only ever drink wine with my food, and that’s only once every 2 or 3 weeks. Or I’ll drink water or wine between courses. But not with my actual food. I think I’d get confused drinking and eating at the same time!

No. That is not correct. 🤦‍♀️

My Dad heard something on the radio, decades ago, and has refused to have a drink with food ever since. There's some reason it's bad for you, aparently.

As I posted earlier its to do with enzymes in your mouth that are released when you eat and aid digestion.

Drinking anything while eating gets rid of these enzymes and so inhibits digestion.

Sartre · 05/06/2026 07:13

My DH doesn’t and I found it super weird when we met. He simply said he never has, it wasn’t normal in his house growing up at all and so he’s used to it.

Oh, dear God... 🙄

'Scientific evidence shows this is a persistent myth; drinking liquids while eating does not "wash away" or dilute digestive enzymes. In fact, the human body adapts to fluid intake by adjusting its secretions, and enzymes require water to chemically break down food (a process called hydrolysis..."

At home I dont as I want one after dinner and dishes when I am relaxed, even non alcoholic ones

I feel like this except I drink water with my meal but not anything hot as I have clearing up to do so I leave my hot drink of herbal tea until I sit down and relax after the place is tidy.

Disasterclass · 05/06/2026 07:46

I read something the other day about the world being divided into ’wet’ food people and ‘dry’ food people ie whether you want loads of sauces with your food or not. Maybe this is an extension of that?

I eat a lot of "wet" foods because I enjoy those types of meals. I drink after I have eaten.

Panda89 · 05/06/2026 07:49

I always have water with my meals, so does DD.
DH has Pepsi max which I think is really weird because it’s sweet.
The thought of having a hot drink with a meal horrifies me!

TheTwenties · 05/06/2026 07:50

I might or might not have a glass by me when I have dinner but I never drink out of it whilst eating so it might just as well not be there. I drink loads throughout the whole of the rest of the day. If out for a meal whatever drink I’ve ordered would almost always be finished by the time food arrives and then I wouldn’t drink anything whilst eating, but have water afterwards.

Squirrelblanket · 05/06/2026 07:55

I would in a restaurant but never at home, unless it was a dinner party. I've never really thought about it.
