Do you know what blows my mind… people who have their dinner with no drink. Like no drink at all. No juice no tea no water. How do you people do it?

what do you think?

YABU - a drink with food is not necessary
YANBU - not having a drink with your food makes you a psycho!!

a glass of milk goes down well with a bacon sandwich this is completely unacceptable

Agree, that's so weird. What's wrong with people?

GentleSheep · 04/06/2026 20:42

I always have a cold drink once I've finished my meal. DP has a hot drink!

MesonBoson · 04/06/2026 20:43

80-90% of a plant is water.

60-70% of an animal.

When you're eating, you're hydrating.

Having a cup of tea with dinner is the work of a psychopath

Esmeraldathe3rd · 04/06/2026 20:44

I can only stomach a few mouthfuls before I need a drink. I give the kids water with dinner. If they have juice or pop then they just drink that and then don't want the food. But I can't just not have drinks with dinner.

I drink quite a lot though and can't stomach full sugar drinks as it makes me feel so dehydrated. I drink about a litre through the night, I pee a lot too though.

Maybe it's to do with how much sugar, salt, seasoning you have on your food? The people I know who don't drink with their meal eat very bland food. Whereas our diet is quite rich I suppose.

Looks like I’m in the weirdo gang too! It’s never occurred to me to have a drink with food.

If you’re out for dinner would you have a drink alongside?

Dontcallmescarface · 04/06/2026 20:46

I never have a drink with food. Food bits floating in a glass ewww.

user1476613140 · 04/06/2026 20:47

DH is an absolute freak as the four DC have squash or milk with their meals at the table, I drink water with my meals but DH just doesn't drink anything at all! Weirdo!

Honeypickle · 04/06/2026 20:56

Always have a drink with food!

Breakfast - cup of tea/glass of apple juice

Lunch - Diet Coke

Dinner - Diet Coke

Putmedownfor5shagger · 04/06/2026 20:57

I have a drink with everything. Even just a bite of something, I need a sip of drink.

I dont like hot drinks though - only squash and fizzy drinks will do! Fizzy water is good too.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 04/06/2026 21:05

I had it drilled into me from a fairly young age not to drink 30 mins before or after a meal.

If I did then it just made me feel bloated and sloshy.

On the bariatric pathway now and they give the same advice.

FrangipaniBlue · 04/06/2026 21:17

What’s the reason people say they “need” or “have to have” a drink either food? Beyond medical need.

I can take it ir leave it…… at home I rarely have a drink with food. At a restaurant I order a drink while waiting for food and might have some before then finish it after.

UniquePinkSwan · 04/06/2026 21:45

I always eat first then have a drink but the drink is always sitting beside me

bryceQ · 04/06/2026 21:49

I don't drink with dinner at all. I drink loads throughout the day. I just see eating and drinking as separate activities….

ManyShapesOfPasta · 04/06/2026 21:55

I don't get one specially, but I always have a water bottle, I tend not to drink until I've finished my meal though.

I never have a drink with food. I think it’s weird! Surely you just fill your stomach up with water/juice/whatever so you can’t eat?

That's exactly what I think. I drink after food, definitely not immediately after either.

Borborygmus · 04/06/2026 22:03

I always have tea after (rather than with) every meal.

DilemmaDelilah · 04/06/2026 22:03

@Malasana the sweetness of the milk goes really well with the saltiness of the bacon, in my opinion. Has to be crispyish bacon on white bread with tomato sauce - no butter - though.

Bleurghh! A glass of breastmilk with anything / nothing past toddlerhood is ick.

Do you only eat dry meals? Do you have a dry mouth?

I don't usually need a drink with my food because most things we eat have a sauce - pasta with a sauce, curry, roast with gravy, salad etc.

I have a hot drink after I have eaten.

SlimShandy · 04/06/2026 22:11

This is one of those threads that blows my mind, like finding out that some people take off all of their clothes to poo, or stand up to wipe their bum.

I haven't noticed a single person in my life at home or at work that doesn't drink when eating, but clearly there are loads of them out there.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/06/2026 22:13

I was never allowed a drink from about an hour before until an hour after food. I don't remember the full explanation (and my grandparents always had drinks at the table), but it boiled down to 'you'll just moan that your tummy hurts and you feel sick'. No, mother, that was due to you deciding you knew better than the hospital consultant who told you I shouldn't have gluten or dairy, nothing to do with having access to drinks.

I'm still rubbish at remembering to drink now.

Whatisbest26 · 04/06/2026 22:13

I never have a drink with food I just don’t feel thirsty when I’m eating.

Changeisstillpossible · 04/06/2026 22:13

My in-laws were like this. I could hardly get the food down in their house, my mouth was that dry. I'd ask for a glass of water and be given a tiny glass that held one mouthful of water at a time.

It seemed very strange to me.

They're eating a bit of a pig with some bread, not expecting her to get her tits out for the family.
