To think amount of Roma and Traveller children withdrawn from school underage needs to be cracked down on?

Two things have made me think about this.

One was the recent thread on Venezuela Fury, Tyson's daughter. Her situation appears slightly different as apparently she did receive tuition online but it made me look into the wider situation.

I know there has been improvement, and that many Roma & travellers families don't do this. But it shouldn't be allowed in the first place. Yes, some who do may homeschool their kids properly, but how many?

There needs to be more regulation of homeschooling.

Why do Roma & traveller kids often slip through the net? Is it sometimes linked to families moving around so children move from one LA to another?

There' nothing wrong with kids preferring to pursue technical options than academic, or living the travelling lifestyle. But school would give them a chance to choose.

Oh come on, if you really care about traveller children why start a thread which is then full of casual racism. Plenty of children are out of school, plenty of families are also misogynistic, don't value education and all the rest of it. Not all travellers are the same as whatever stereotypes portray and it's definitely no easy thing to go through life being hated and discriminated against from birth really, that has more of an impact on any childhood impact than anything else. I reckon if you want to help them find an organisation supporting traveller communities and offer some time and resource

Racism! Bollocks.

Most of them are Irish like me and I wouldn't want them living next door and if people spoke the truth, most would agree.

When did this happen?

They aren't a fucking different race from Caucasians , although for the shame they bring, I wish they were a different nationality.

You have made me laugh-they've pulled your plonker very successfully and are laughing their heads off at the bleeding hearts that gather around to protect them.

It's like watching sheep gather around to protect the wolves!

Wow these threads ...they almost exactly follow the pattern of the rise of nazism...anti Pride today, making a single murder represent all Sikhs and now the Romas....all the same targeted groups for condemnation and otracisation.

Never again anyone?

Where does targetting whole groups with a single opinion lead do you think?

With lots of posts about 'they must conform to our culture'. Some people are far down the road of hate led thinking.

Totally sickening ...they come for women next and its already here with anti abortion, extra taxes for childless women and household voting 🤢😔

This with bells on.

Travelling show people are fairground people.
Totally separate from travellers or Roma or circus.
I would be surprised if fairground people just randomly attacked other teenagers.

Can I ask what area you live in?

Nope. Dont want to say where I live. But it’s absolutely 100% the fairground/traveller kids who have been fighting this weekend. I witnessed one of the attacks. Police can do very little. Extremely frustrating.

Dont weaponise your Irishness as if it makes you immune to racism against travellers. Irish travellers are genetically distinct from the settled population and have been for 100s of years.

You keep saying traveller. Traveling Show people are not travellers.
If you don't know the difference how can you know the perpetrators are fairground?

Yes you’re racist, there’s 1001 crimes committed by people of all nationalities but you are focusing on only brown people crime.
You need to realise it’s MEN that are the common denominator in most murders and rapes.

Ninety two convictions in the Rotherham paedophile rings. Know how many of the men were white ? Three. I live in an area of high immigration and see things that would make your hair curl - can’t vocalise it though. Apparently it’s racist to point out that your 14 year old daughter is being terrorised on her way home from school by men from ethnic backgrounds, offering to pay her for sex and who clearly have no respect for women of any denomination. You need to realise that just because you don’t encounter it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Charel2girl5 · Today 18:49

I used to teach travelers years ago and all the girls were focused on was getting married some as young as 16/17. Funnily enough their mothers used to come to my adult evening classes when they realised their husbands treated them like shit and they wanted to get an education to provide for their children when their husbands disappeared into the sunset with another gullible young woman.
before I get flamed this happened in 9/10 situations.

JuliaBraverman · Today 18:50

Under the Education Act, they have to show they are getting a suitable age appropriate education. How can a mother who has never been educated herself provide this?

Schools pick up on danger signs, report it and nothing is done.

Source: I reported a (non-traveller) boy exhibiting dangerous signs. Reported it. Was mocked.

3 yrs later, he carried out a serious offence. He was still only a teenager.

Edited

Who were you mocked by?

Bollocks!

Is it bollocks. Anti-traveller discrimination in Ireland is a pretty well documented phenomenon.

TheIceBear · Today 18:52

I have known a good few travellers went to an all girls school and had plenty of travellers in the class. One or two of them were often absent , one was absent for weeks at a time, she was older than the rest of us and really really struggled and was really far behind when she did attend and could barely read . This I find sad. A couple of them were in every day same as the rest of us. One was quite studious and wanted to finish school but her parents were encouraging her to drop out at 15, she insisted on finishing and did . None of them caused any trouble in the class they were all decent and nice people. I don’t like seeing travellers being judged the vast majority especially traveller women are decent people. It’s just unfortunate there is a high percentage that do cause trouble compared to the general population and people can’t see past that I guess.

handsdownthebest · Today 18:52

My DS is friends with a girl from a local traveller community. She did go to school and also managed to get GCSEs and an A level by fighting back against the rules and her dad and also married a non-traveller, but in her own words…very rare and she would agree with many comments here about it being used for keeping their women in their place.

So how exactly would you categorise Henry Nowaks’ murder, given the behaviour of the perpetrator ?

BillieWiper · Today 18:53

I don't know how many on here actually know any gypsies or travellers? I've heard that education at least until 16 is becoming much more common place. I think things are changing in terms of expectations of gender roles. Slowly, but the young travellers in their 20s won't be doing exactly what their grandparents did.

Absolutely, as is their genetic distinctiveness

Irish Travellers are of Irish ancestral origin and have no particular genetic ties to European Roma groups, a DNA study has found.

Theres no requirement for a visit to be allowed, child to be interviewed or examples of work provided. A parent can refuse these things. No inference is allowed to be made by refusal that tyhe child is not having a suitable education

The law is very loose here. If none of the above is agreed to by a parent, how do you believe someone can show suitable education?

Allseeingallknowing · Today 18:56

Cheeseandolivesplease · Today 18:38

@Allseeingallknowing I guess the argument to that would be that "learning" isn't always about formal education. So, for example, learning how to clean an oven is an education of sorts.

Then there should be criteria to meet.

Jellox · Today 19:00

Canoodler · Today 16:46

I think it's similar to the Sikh knife thing. I think the law needs to be the same for everyone from now on. We all need to be playing by the same rules.

What an odd thing to say.

Anyone can home school their children.
MN is full of parents who choose to homeschool.

Princesspeaches99 · Today 19:00

I think their culture is slowly changing for the better. They need to be literate in order to communicate on social media. There are a lot more these days who can read & write. They seem to stay in school a bit longer than they did in my time. I agree with the poster who said that the men rule. Women are treated as second class citizens. Unfortunately the Fury girl has set things back again, why on earth did she need to get married at 16. She'll be popping out babies one after the other like her mother soon
Although because her family are extremely wealthy it's a different situation. Young traveller girls will still look up to her though. They need some more positive role models.

They fairgrounds arrive and the traveller kids arrive en masse in town. They all dress in a similar way and have identical haircuts. The girls dress in a fairly distinctive way too (the boys are the ones causing the problems that I’ve seen and heard about).

I don’t know if they are Irish travellers or fairground families. They have Irish accents and they’re a pita. The ones causing chaos in town are anyway.

edited to add - the police call them traveller children and the shop security guards are constantly radioing “group of travellers outside Superdrug/boots” etc

likelysuspect · Today 19:03

JuliaBraverman · Today 19:01

That is the regulation, you have to show suitable education. But equally you have no legal obligation to let anyone in, anyone to inspect, child to be interviewed, work to be inspected.

meisafairy · Today 19:03

So how exactly would you categorise Henry Nowaks’ murder, given the behaviour of the perpetrator ?

I categorise it as absolutely horrific and the sentence should be longer and I hope it is looked at as the man with the knife was looking for trouble, he had been reported for stealing swords from a gurdwara previously.

I don’t think blame should be apportioned to anyone but him his family who covered up for him.

A whole religion that lives generally peaceful lives in the uk should not be tarnished for a monsters behaviour.

I don’t do religion or hate. I respect others beliefs though.

The Nowak family asked for people not to turn this into the division it has become.
