Do I dress like an old lady? I’m 42 and yes I’m aware I need a new bra and I have a fitting for one next week

OP posts:

Dear God the ageism in this thread is absolutely appalling.

I wish MN would make.ageism a reason for reporting threads.

What does dressing " like an old lady" actually mean? It is absolutely nasty , derogatory language

I'm 74. I don't dress " like an old lady". I dress like " me". How I want to look.
The assumption that old ladies are worthless unsightly, less than human, is absolutely disgusting.

You’ve read a lot into a throwaway remark. It’s you who has used the derogatory words not the OP. OP is not responsible for your inference here

I have no idea what you are on about

I am sorry if you take personally the concept of "dressing like an old lady".

You bet I had no problem with the phrase dressing like a teenager. I do. It’s a lazy stereotype. Hence you lost your bet.

No nerve has been touched but my point is that ageism is obnoxious. Those of us who are lucky enough get older. Marginalising us in terms of how we dress - with our old lady clothes - is tiresome and lazy and ridiculous.

I hope you’re around for long enough to discover the frustration.

MyIcyHeart · 30/05/2026 18:00

The dress is dull AF and makes you look dumpy round the mid-section.

I think this dress makes most people look this way if you’re not slim.

purpleme12 · 30/05/2026 19:30

I think it looks quite nice on you

Although reading this thread quite a few don't think that

mondaytosunday · 30/05/2026 19:33

Never seen an old lady wear a dress similar to that.

Griselinia · 30/05/2026 19:33

On first impressions, no it's just a basic dress. On second look, with the bracelets it's giving a little bit stuck in the 2000s, your favourite band is still the killers.

well not old ladies dress like "old ladies"
so am not too worried 😂

I would not dress like our old Queen used to dress. Not my taste.

I am also very confident that many people do not like the way I actually dress. I could not care less. I'd rather look like me than looking like them.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/05/2026 19:35

Dress is fine and your "friend" is a bitch.

Hallywally · 30/05/2026 19:36

You look fine!

Borracha · 30/05/2026 19:37

Honestly?
the colour looks like a white shirt that got accidentally put in with a pair of jeans. If it was red/blue/any other bright colour it would be a much nicer dress.

I also have a thing about bra straps showing. If you can’t do braless, then perhaps a strapless bra?

Im aware this is super blunt but you have a banging figure and this dress doesn’t make the most of it!

Pinkgin00 · 30/05/2026 19:37

Its just a casual dress that anyone of any age could wear.

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/05/2026 19:37

I have this dress in the cream and brown stripe version after reading loads of good reviews. I like it but I do feel more frumpy in it than I thought I would. I think it’s the cut of the top and the length. That dipped waist isn’t as flattering as it’s meant to be (on anyone) I don’t think, unless in a more structured dress.

I have much smaller boobs than you and wear mine with a good strapless bra.

Would you mind please describing what old ladies do dress like? Or can you accept that “old ladies” are not all wearing the same thing?

BeNavyLion · 30/05/2026 19:41

hellospring26 · 30/05/2026 17:27

You need a decent bra, (Please tell me not M&S) the dress isn’t ‘old lady’. Old ladies can wear what they want anyway.

Edited

Sorry if you've already said, I haven't read the full thread yet, but where would you say is a good place?

I need to get myself a good one and want to save money on the experimentation journey to find one through all the rubbish purchases 😅

neilyoungismyhero · 30/05/2026 19:42

I'm an old lady sitting eating ice cream in my docs and Levis and vest top.

TheCloudsAbove · 30/05/2026 19:42

You look nice in it. It’s not old lady style at all OP.

Daffodilsinthespring · 30/05/2026 19:43

Absolutely not. You look lovely

Kittybway · 30/05/2026 19:46

Sensibletrousers · 30/05/2026 18:43

You need to care less, basically.
I am 47 and am told I dress like a teenaged boy… and I couldn’t care less!

I also get told I dress like a teenage boy/ a lesbian. I am neither but can see why people say that.

The dress is nice, and quite trendy at the moment but agree the shirring (thank you for the new word!) Doesn't suit big boobs - im a HH/J cup, which is hard to dress but structured tops if you can find them to fit properly look good.

I dont see how 'old lady' style would be offensive any more than teenager/millennial/mumsy/dad core/primary school teacher chic is, all of which i see and hear regularly 🤔

Here’s a 60 year old on her style instagram page. Might make you wind your neck in with the ageist comments!;

I’m not sure she clarified 60 as an old lady, I’d have assumed 80 odds.Hmm

BashthatTerriesorange · 30/05/2026 19:49

likelysuspect · 30/05/2026 17:35

Personally I think dresses like that look frumpy

Me too. It’s fine for bumming about in.

SpiralSister · 30/05/2026 19:51

Hideous.

Mostly the attitudes being expressed here, but also the dress.

I am old. So feel free to ignore, obviously 🙄

Thanks for all replies, the nice ones in particular . My friend maybe seemed rude but I did ask her to be honest and she gave her honest opinion

dress from m&S

i so wish my boobs were smaller

I bet your DH doesn’t.

lazyarse123 · 30/05/2026 19:54

It looks nice but I'm 68 and would wear it, spaghetti straps and huge boobs too, so maybe not the opinion you're after.

I think it’s a fashionable style in the sense of a trend that’s come round again - so it may once have been considered ‘frumpy’ but is now back in fashion. So maybe your friend just isn’t up to date with fashion trends.

I think it suits you as a style - I think a brighter colour would suit you better and lift the dress, making the ruching details stand out, but that’s about all I could say as a critique.

UnintentionalArcher · 30/05/2026 19:58

But I think these days there are much less rigid expectations about age-related dressing, which is great and how it should be. This is a style that would flatter lots of women at lots of ages. I love it when I see women older than me dressing in interesting, current or unusual things.
