To think people that don’t round up ages are odd

Friend is 30 late July and is still saying he’s 29 when I was that close to my 30th I was just saying I was 30

OP posts:
Toomanyclothesinthecloset · 26/05/2026 22:53

No, I don't think they are odd...that is their age.

mrsbowes · 26/05/2026 22:53

What

poolcrew · 26/05/2026 22:53

But he is 29? He hasn’t had his 30th birthday yet?

FiveShelties · 26/05/2026 22:55

No chance I will be 70 in August but now I AM 69.😂

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 26/05/2026 22:55

YABU

TheChosenTwo · 26/05/2026 22:55

Huh? I think you’re the weird one! Only time I really hear people doing something LIKE this is when parents of small children say “oh she’s 2 in June” which is understandable.
your friend is just stating their age.

StolenTeapots · 26/05/2026 22:55

So what happens when it's his 30th party and everyone is confused

FloofyKat · 26/05/2026 22:56

No, OP, it’s you that’s the odd one!

PercyPigInAWig · 26/05/2026 22:56

YABU. People who add on and race ahead to the next age are odd. You are whatever age you are until your birthday

I actually don't understand the mentality. Your friend is 29, I can count, I know they will be 30 on next birthday so don't need you to round it up!

See also 'how old is your gran?' 'oh, she'll be 79 next birthday'. So, your gran is 78.

rebeccachoc · 26/05/2026 22:56

So you say you are 30, but then for example, you have a meal out for your 30th and you invite someone you've already said you're 30 to, doesn't that take some explaining? Much easier to say I'm 29, 30 in a month or similar.

AlloftheTime · 26/05/2026 22:56

Seriously? You must be bored.

harderthanIexpected · 26/05/2026 22:56

Why on earth would you do that? Your friend is 29, that is his age both practically and legally. What do you possibly gain by giving a misleading answer to a straightforward question?

But he is 29 !

Ineffable23 · 26/05/2026 22:56

I understand your point given the usual conventions on rounding, but ages are not something that follows that convention. You're 29 until you have your 30th birthday. If the conventions and language had evolved differently then sure, but that's not how it works here. Some other countries have a different system - I think maybe South Korea does something different? But it isn't at all the norm in the UK (or most other countries).

CypressGrove · 26/05/2026 22:57

I've never heard of any adult rounding up their age.

Floppyearedlab · 26/05/2026 22:57

It's those who say 'my child is 34 months' who piss me off. So in other words he is nearly 3.

ElleShapiro · 26/05/2026 22:57

Youre the odd one 🤣 hes 29

CamillaMcCauley · 26/05/2026 22:57

Actual lol

SnappyQuoter · 26/05/2026 22:58

I don’t know anyone who does what you’re suggesting. You’re the weird one. He’s 29. Why would he say he is 30?

Mysterian · 26/05/2026 22:59

I'm 635 months.

HeddaGarbled · 26/05/2026 22:59

HE IS 29!

Happy 53rd birthday in June?

PercyPigsAreOverRated · 26/05/2026 23:00

You're definitely the odd one. Your friend is 29.
I remember when DS was small and I was at a group of some kind. One of the other Mums there had a son who was a day older than mine. I mentioned that our boys were 2.5, and she told me off! Apparently it was totally unacceptable to "wish their lives away" as they weren't 2.5 for another 2 weeks. Hmm
