To think people that don’t round up ages are odd

Friend is 30 late July and is still saying he’s 29 when I was that close to my 30th I was just saying I was 30

OP posts:
WhatAMarvelousTune · 27/05/2026 07:36

How often does this come up though?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/05/2026 07:43

Do you also round up your weight? 🤔

ACynicalDad · 27/05/2026 07:44

YABOdd

titchy · 27/05/2026 08:05

You again….

BreatheAndFocus · 27/05/2026 08:12

No, YABU. I think rounding up is the odd thing. If someone asks your age, you tell them your age on that day, the same as if someone asks you what year your DC is in at school, you tell them the year they’re in now, not what year they’ll be in in September!

DisrobeDatrobe · 27/05/2026 08:14

I do this in my head as my next birthday approaches, and I get used to it so if asked I will sometimes accidentally say the age I will be at my next birthday rather than my current age. I never mind being a year older and I enjoy the milestones, I was really chuffed when I hit 50.

OhBettyCalmDown · 27/05/2026 08:14

You’re definitely the odd one out here. I round up all sorts of things but never my age. I’d say I’m almost 30 or almost 40 but it’s not weird to state your actual age. If you always rounded up to the next big birthday from the age of 37 you’d be saying your 30 for like 4 years

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 27/05/2026 08:16

I had an ex who would get really angry if I didn't round up my age. So when I was 25 he would tell people "Of course she pretends to be 25 but she's actually 26."

He was a bit of a nutter too.

FortyFacedFuckers · 27/05/2026 08:20

The only person I know that would do this was my kid when he was a young child, as one of the youngest in his year, some of his friends had birthdays 2 weeks after his but a year older so he was always desperate to be older so just after he turned 6 if anyone asked his age he would say nearly 7 🤣 but no adult would do that

Thebinisrightthere · 27/05/2026 08:27

Not at all. You're odd for thinking he should 'round up' when his birthday is 2 months away!

Oncemorewithsome · 27/05/2026 08:30

You might say “nearly xx”. But I think it’s pretty normal to give your age until your birthday. You are 29 until you turn 30 on your birthday for example.

MangoSunset · 27/05/2026 08:37

I thought this was going to be about people who say their babies age in weeks when they are over 2 months old, still saying "she's 24 weeks" rather than just rounding up to 6 months old.

Nope, I don't start saying I'm x age until I have had my bday, like someone said if you were 29 and are having a 30th it'd be rather odd if you'd been telling people you were already 30 for months. Unless you are 17 or under who on earth wants to sound older than they are?! You are the odd one here.

Stoicandhappy · 27/05/2026 08:52

No mate, you are the weirdo here, sorry!

porchiepalava · 27/05/2026 09:06

Just me or have we had this weird thread before?

mondaytosunday · 27/05/2026 09:12

Odd? To state their actual age? So I’m 64 and nope I’m not rounding up to 65, THAT seems an odd thing to do. You don’t say a ten month old baby is one, you don’t say a 19 year old is 20, and your mate has more than three months (a quarter of a year!) still being 29!

ChakaKan · 27/05/2026 09:20

YABU
The only time I do find it annoying is when people don’t round up (or down) their child’s age from months when they’re past the age of 2. I can’t be doing with talking about 29 month olds etc.

Butchyrestingface · 27/05/2026 09:22

Doggymummar · 27/05/2026 07:30

I round up when I get over the 5, so I'm 57 and I've been saying nearly 60 since 55

OP, you have a kindred spirit.

Branleuse · 27/05/2026 09:22

I say my actual age. I might say I'm nearly something if it's close to my birthday.

It makes no difference does it. Noone really cares about your precise age

FiveShelties · 27/05/2026 09:39

RustyBear · 27/05/2026 07:27

So am I! Have you renewed your driving licence yet?😁

No, I live in NZ and mine is valid until 75. My UK one expired when I no longer had a UK address.

Another 5 years to go😁

C152 · 27/05/2026 09:49

YABU. If someone asks how old you are, they want to know at the time they ask, not how old you'll be at some point in the future. Your friend is 29 until the day of their 30th birthday. I've never met anyone who does what you do.

aLFIESMA · 27/05/2026 09:51

StrictlyCoffee · 26/05/2026 23:22

Don’t be daft OP.

my birthday is tomorrow but I’d still not round up today!

Very Happy Birthday StrictlyCoffee, hope you have a nice one!

What are these occasions when you're being asked your age? I can't remember the last time anyone asked me or I asked anyone else.

I've definitely read it before as well, maybe there are more than age weirdos

What's the betting the @Sweetypie88 never comes back to the thread?

MrsShawnHatosy · 27/05/2026 10:10

FiveShelties · 26/05/2026 22:55

No chance I will be 70 in August but now I AM 69.😂

Ditto! I’ll be 65 next week but for now I’m 64!

MonteStory · 27/05/2026 10:15

For children yes. A few weeks either side of their birthday I’ll probably say ‘very nearly 7’ or ‘just turned 7’ as at that age a year makes quite a big difference. I would have different expectations for a child who’s literally just turned 4 versus a nearly 5 year old.

My expectations for 29 year olds are the same as 30 year olds.
